View Full Version : Not planning to watch the Olympics

I almost hate to admit this, but not enticed at all to watch the Winter Olympics coming up. With all the negatives re China the last few years. The USA is not sending gvt reps to China and NBC limiting number of reporters and announcers. From what I heard much of their broadcasting will be from the USA.
And our athletes were warned about speaking out about China and communications while in the country.
So I personally will drastically limit or avoid watching at all. China was rewarded with the ‘22 Olympics despite many human rights and international issues
Do others here have concerns about China hosting and decided to limit or not view???? Is it just me?

Sports and science are two areas that tend to bring nations together and such co-operation should be encouraged.
If you don't like China then I suggest a better way of protesting would be not buying its products. You can continue to do this long after the Olympics are over.

Although not a big Olympics fan, I do like some of the events. Olympics is the only time we get to see some of these events. I will watch some, perhaps. Can't say anything good about their government, but the regular people aren't any better or worse than folks from anywhere else from what I've experienced.
And I thought the idea was to support your home team, athletes from the USA. Having to represent us while stuck behind the Bamboo Curtain, believing we have their backs, at least in spirit, may help some of them deal with the stress.
GO TEAM USA! Have a wonderful and successful Olympics!

Wouldn’t watch if I were paid good money. The Olympic committee should have never allowed the games to be held there. Are there new sports in the winter games like the newly added break dancing in the summer games. Maybe snow angel competition? Also I don’t like “sports” where someone’s opinion of how well they performed creates their score. I’M OUT

I’m only one person but no, I will not be watching. I’m just sick we are sending our athletes to China. They were advised to not bring personal cell phones and to get a burner phone, that they destroy or leave in China. I’m afraid their DNA will be collected. We are sending our very best athletes, the most special human specimens and I’m afraid specimens is what they will be. We are sending them, when they have worked with a dedication of their whole lives to reach this goal, with no protection. Shame on the IOC and shame on our government. So no, I won’t be watching. I wish our athletes the best and will happily watch competition from just about anywhere else on earth. But no.

Seriously? You do know the whole reason Rome created the Olympics was to try and bring together other countries. I will definitely be watching. Also, if you know your history, China was much worse 20+ years ago. They continue to improve their ancient culture. Don’t try to make them something they are not. American culture is only about 254 years old, but China’s is 5000+ years.

The truth is from a young Chinese professional lady that I know here in TV is that she feels very blessed to not live in China any longer. She is still trying to get some family out, but hope is fading. She says there are no human rights in that country. She says what we hear is true. Very sad she said as people there do not know the difference.
Once she told me that, no Olympics for me.

I feel that our dependency upon China will never be reduced unless we make some sacrifices to let our businesses and government know by at least limiting showing our support for them, financially or any way we can.
I will buy American (when and if I can) and refuse to support China by watching the Olympics. Personally, I feel the athletes themselves should be boycotting. If all athletes from countries that condemn the policies of China had boycotted, they might have sent a powerful message to this regime.

First and foremost you must remember China is a communist ruled country. Second, they are our enemy as they wish to conquer the rest of the world. Third, our government has allowed our businesses to establish their factories in China in order to save money on labor costs. The downside of this policy is our jobs in the US went with them. Now we are reaping the rewards of a supply chain that is controlled by the same country who looks to overthrow democracy anywhere in the world. I think US based manufacturing HAS FINALLY REALIZED what this means, no parts to make their products. Auto manufacturers as well as all other manufacturers that rely on micro-chips are suffering because of the policy of outsourcing supplies for parts going to other countries. The United States CANNOT be the economic engine for third world and communist countries. We spent billions in Vietnam and it cost our country over 58,000 lost and countless maimed lives and now we trade with another communist country. Have we learned nothing from history? I guess not, as we went into the middle east with the best of intentions but have now managed to abandon those intentions because people are tired of expending money and lives for nothing. Of course the defense contractors have gotten rich off of this as in every other “conflict” we get into. If you are going to fight for something you must go into it full bore and defeat the enemy, not appease them.

I won't be watching them, not so much because of the politics (which are in my opinion a very valid reason not to watch them) but because the Winter Olympics (and Summer games too, for that matter) are "amateur" in name only. 1980 marked the last time I thought that the amateur element was really there.

Let's be clear...these are athletes. They are the best of the best from every country. They have little if anything to do with the politics, despite the few that speak up. As with anything, there will be segments that will be watched and others that will be ignored. How wonderful to have that option.

Who assists us? Well, that would be Canada, the UK, France, Australia, and many, many allies AFTER 9/11 - when we were sneakily attacked. I have NOT forgotten that mess. Now WE OWE a lot to all those countries. And Japan supported us somehow, but they did not have a large army to send. So, today China is menacing Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and even the US west coast and maybe even all cities in the US with their newest missiles.
......So, my bottom line is that I won't watch their Olympic broadcasts and I agree that all the athletes from Democracies should boycott their country because going there gives China $ money and world prestige. And I further think that we should start a SLOW boycott of ALL the manufacturing products from China and ANY other communist country. We are at a pivotal moment in History. If we got away from China then products would cost more in the short term, but we could trade with Canada, the UK, Sweden, and ALL other Democracies and long term then the cost of products and farm produce should stabilize downward from technologies like factory farming, AI, robotics, and robotic factories. And we could raise the GNP of our fellow Democracies at the same time. As Paul Revere once cried out, "Give me Democracy or give me the slow death of a 3rd world country".

By safe I meant personal safety. Where you can ride the subway and not be worried about being pushed in front of a train by a drug addict.
Russia has no intent on invading anyone. Ukraine is a wreck to in large part to the US-backed "color revolution" coup in 2014. Russia doesn't need more land or to have to deal with Ukraine's problems. Let the US & western Europe waste time & money on the mess Nuland, Clinton, McCain etc made. Plus Hunter Biden...
Even President Zelensky is saying there will be no invasion and he's asking the US/Biden to tone it down. Way down.
Russia WILL protect ethnic Russians / Russian speaking peoples in Donbass (far eastern Ukraine). 80+ percent of the people there are ethnic Russians and identify so. Just like in Crimea where they voted to re-join Russia. There is nothing the US or NATO can do about it. No American should die for Ukraine.
Only 16 percent of Americans can even find Ukraine on a blank world map. Who reading this can?
Ukraine is a fake country, having only existed as an independent country since 1991. Before then different pieces were parts of surrounding countries. Outside of far western Ukraine, there is no "Ukranian people". There are Russians, Poles, Hungarians, etc living within mostly political boundaries put in place by the Soviets (who were indeed communists). Note that western Ukraine aligned with Germany during WW2. Banderists, AZOV Battalion, look them up. Not pretty.

As Paul Revere once cried out, "Give me Democracy or give me the slow death of a 3rd world country".
Paul Revere?
Forget it, he's rolling...

i agree. Not feeling stir fryed up to watch this peking duck & their general tsao's
propaganda take or delivery.
How about a marathon to wuhan 721 miles to the south for some take out on whats happening there.
You can't get General Tso's chicken in China. It's a Chinese-AMERICAN dish. Wow talk about propaganda.
Meanwhile, I'm not going to punish AMERICAN athletes by refusing to watch them compete. Looking forward to the figure skating coverage. I'll be watching it right here in the comfort of my own home in America.

Worldseries27 wrote "Not feeling stir fryed up to watch this peking duck & their general sao's propaganda..." as a lame insult to Chinese people. Oh so edgy, I bet he ze* was pulling up the corners of their eyes at the time.
* New American for he/she. I don't want to offend.
