Commando - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commando)

Commandos would be better and more appropriate as the coach and other employees call a lot of the plays along with the quarterback. You do not have a lot of leaders on a football field at game time. Maybe off the field but it would be chaos if a lot of NFL players were managing the plays at the same time.

I'm waiting for the objection to the "Master's Tournament". Perhaps, like the Redskins, they could go for "The Augusta Golf Tournament". Then later change it to "The Augusta Azaleas" :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:

Should have just dropped the 'Redskins' part of the name.
Commanders is degrading to the commanded.

Nah. The Alligators would complain. It's pretty humiliating even for an alligator (or turtle, or mosquito, or whateverthehellitis that is being referred to), to be called a "thing".

There'd be riots and everything!

Exactly! Of course, that would be discriminating against the White Potatoes or the Sweet Potatoes. Although, they could have left the "skins" part and just added "Fore" on the front.............:1rotfl:

It seems that most sports team names have something to do with the city or area in which the team is located. Yes, there are some that are named after animals but think of the Yankees, Tampa Bay Lightning, New England Patriots, San Fran 49ers, Boston Celtics, Miami Dolphins, Seattle Seahawks.

Why not something like the Washington Congress, Presidents, Monuments.

Commanders doesn't seem to have anything to do with anything.

Should have changed the name to the pigskins. Why not, then they could still simply be called the skins for short. Oh, I forgot, that would be offensive to the swine community. Never mind.

What made me laugh is that when they revealed the name, they showed a new logo stating "Washington Commanders", and in the logo it says Established 1932.

That is completely incorrect. You gave up your 1932 designation when you caved and pulled the actual team name that was established in 1932. It should read established 2022.

They shouldn’t have changed the name anyway. For decades teams have had names like this and not a person had issues with it.
Now this wokeness movement has come along & can’t do anything without trying not to “offend” anyone.
I’m of Irish decent & the Boston Celtics have been a favorite team of mine going back to the Larry Bird days & that’s still one of my favorite basketball teams of mine but I’m not crying because they use Irish themes for their team/merchandise. Goodness what’s the harm?
Don’t give into this woke/PC garage & just have fun watching a game, it offends me to have to put up with this movement, why don’t those who started it think about that?

Personally, I find it hilarious. I wonder how many indigenous Americans have ever complained about the name. I dare say that those that found the name offensive were neither minority nor seriously offended.

But, give them some nondescript label since the only recognition they get is either for losing or for some disingenuous complaint about their supposed exploitation of a minority group. Call them the "Washington Duds."

The highly biased and incorrect poll by the Washington Post, supposedly advancing the idea that Native Americans had no problem with the previous name, was long ago debunked. It did allow racists & bigots to push their discriminatory narrative for a while though.

A New Study Contradicts a Washington Post Poll About How Native Americans View the Redskins' Name | Washingtonian (DC) (https://www.washingtonian.com/2020/02/21/a-new-study-contradicts-a-washington-post-poll-about-how-native-americans-view-the-redskins-name/)

"But a new study from academics at the University of Michigan and UC Berkeley contradicts that data. In a scientific survey of more than 1,000 Native Americans, roughly half of the participants said they were offended by the Redskins’ name. Moreover, 65 percent said they were offended by sports fans performing a “tomahawk chop,” and 73 percent said they were offended by fans imitating Native American dances."

Yes, the WaPo study was "highly biased and incorrect", but the studies from "academics" at Berkeley and Michigan (both bastions of free thought... :1rotfl: snort, chortle) say what YOU want them to say, so they're correct...

And who, besides you, mentioned the "tomahawk chop" or "Native American Dances", which are NEVER seen at DC games?
