Switched outlet in the bedroom

Ok, the bedroom has 2 switches. One for the fan and one for an outlet by the bed. The fan does not have a light but I want to add one. Then I'd like to use the switch for the outlet for the fan light. I know there is a red wire in the switch box that if connected would control a fan light. But how do you make the outlet switch control the fan light and then make the top outlet live 24/7.

Yes, but I don't want the switched outlet and would prefer the switch be used for the fan light. Not have a dual type switch to take one spot and control fan & light.

The switch that controls outlet breaks the positive current, disconnect label and reconnect with wire nuts frees up switch. Obviously shut of power.
One wire to the switch is the line wire to outlet would be load. A third conductor would be connected making it a 3 way connection. Take the 3rd conductor connect to switch then attach red wire to other connection (load) on switch.

We did this, change the single switch to a DUAL switch, we used the top switch for the fan, and the bottom switch (red wire) for the light. Send me a PM if you need more info, we did thid on 4 fans that we added light kits to.

I think everyone may be missing the point. We don't want the current switch for the outlet to control the outlet. We want it to control the fan light. If we made the outlet live 24/7, the current outlet switch would control absolutely nothing which is what we want to avoid. I'm aware of multiple versions of switches that can control a light and a fan but this isn't what we desire for the bedrooms. The living room fan currently has only 1 switch for it and the other switches in that gang control other lights so a dual switch for it would be required.

OK, I missed your request, you take the 2 BLACK wires off the switch and connect these together, the outlet will be hot all the time. You then connect a NEW black wire from the HOT side of the other switch to the OLD switch and then connect the RED wire to the remaining terminal on the old switch. Of course you have turn OFF the breaker while you are doing this.

You then connect a NEW black wire from the HOT side of the other switch to the OLD switch and then connect the RED wire to the remaining terminal on the old switch. A lot of wrong advice in here. I did mine in a patio villa and found it was all prewired for this. I found a red wire connected to nothing in the fan junction box. Hooked it to the light kit black wires and the light kit white wires to the other white wires in the box. Pulled the light switch from wall and found the other end of the red wire hooked to nothing. On the switch there was another red wire hooked to it, pulled it off and capped it with wire nut. Connected the red wire that was hooked to nothing to the switch. The switch now controls only the fan light. The bottom half of outlet has no power at all. Pulled the outlet out unhooked the red wire at the bottom and capped it off. Replaced the outlet with a new one without the top to bottom connecter tab broken off. Top and bottom of outlet now live all the time. If unsure call an electrician. I am not an electrician, but I have done home wiring and such for years and have worked with electricians before.

or just replace them with remote control fans, and change the outlet so the connect between halves isn't cut.

You can also buy a split switch for the fan wires and have separate fan and light controls in a single switch

No no no Get your fan light, it's probably a Kichkler (not sure of spelling) fan. Get a wall mount control that goes in place of the wall switch, usually 4 buttons for fan control and a larger bhtton for light. Lowes Home Depot or Amazon. Install light on fan, receiver under cover at ceiling (all wires are labeled for installation) controller in wall box in place of switch. Pretty easy DIY or not too expensive to hire someone.

you don't. you can change the switch to control the new fan light and the fan and leave the switched recepticle alone. it is very simple. or change the existing 2 gang to a 3 gang, install a seperate light and fan control switch.

I put in a fan with a remote built in. We use the remote to turn on the fan and or the light.
Also, in our house, the red wire going to the fan was always hot, it was not controlled by the switch. When I had galaxy out here to do a dryer 220 install, I had them tweak each room so I can use the wall switch to control the light and the other switch to control the fan.
In 1 room, I did use 1 switch that has 2 controls for the fan with light.
I replaced all our fans in our new house with better fans with lights

I just did this with all the fans in the bedrooms. The outlet boxes are wired so the fan and operates off of the switch (the black hot wire) and the light has constant power (the red hot wire). The way it is wired by default, the light on/off has to be controlled by the pull chain on the ceiling fan.

I bought wireless remotes for each fan, wired them off of the black hot and capped the red hot in the ceiling outlet box. Both the fan and the light are now controlled by the remote, and the wall switch will turn on/off both the fan and the light switch. (I leave the switch in the on position all the time and use the remote to control the fan and light).

The light kits appear to be standardized, the possible problem would be the connector may not be the same. I had this happen on 2 so I used crimp connectors. If you open your light first, you will find a White and a Blue wire for the light kit, take picture of these, and then when you go to the store ask if you can open the box to check the connector. Also, make sure the lamps are standard Edison or candelabra type, the 2 I previously mentioned have an odd PIN based lamp socket that I will need to replace.
