Looking to take some golf lessons. Wondering who are the good teachers? Would you recommend the TV Golf Academy? If so, would you recommend the 30 minute lessons or the 60 minute lessons? Figured I'd buy a few in a package. I am not a beginner, i've been playing for 20 years, but had rotator cuff surgery and can't get my swing back.

Any thoughts on couples instruction?

50 minute lessons almost go too fast to get your money's worth but go for the longer one rather than 30 minutes.
I think Arnold Palmer or Saratoga driving range has golf pro lessons
I would go to the golf cages and try to get your swing back by hitting very effortlessly at first then try to work it out.
If not then get a lesson. I was hooking my balls and went to the cage and figured what to do.

Important to know what your learning style is and what you are hoping to learn. If you are looking to restart, classes are often better than individual lessons as you build off of fundamentals and you don't have someone hovering over you all the time. I actually took a golf class at a community college and that was the best class I ever took. It was cheap and broke me down to starting from scratch. If you just need a tweak or adjustment, that is where I found individual instruction worked best for me.

I would recommend Wade Martin at the Palmer's Legends Golf Academy. My game went "in the tank" and I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. I was so fed up, I almost walked away from the game. Instead, I signed up at The Villages Golf Academy for a set of 3 or 4 private lessons, and Wade was the instructor I was assigned. He looked at my swing, shot a video and showed me in less than 10 minutes what my issue was at the time. He gave me some drills to work on, and over 3 or 4 lessons, I built my game back up. Note that he did not try to change my swing, but he helped me to correct what was causing my frustration.

Personally, I would go with the 30 minute lessons, and if you feel you need more help, sign up for more individual lessons. My perspective is that the pro instructor should be able, as Wade did, identify what I need to work on fairly quickly. As on the golf course, if you are thinking about too many things, you are not getting the best out of the lesson or the practice. Rather than getting a lesson for 60 minutes, I would rather learn what I need, go to the range, do the drills and see if I can incorporate the improvement suggestions. I can then do a focused follow-up at the next 30 minute lesson and "learn" the next build.

I would also remind you that if you have specific areas that you want to work on, there are also group lessons that are great-such as the chipping, pitching, bunker play, etc. that all have value depending upon your level of play. I had lessons years ago and I didn't learn half of what I did attending these other focused lessons. Joey Hidock is an excellent instructor and hosts "Joey's Short Game Clinic" (I attended 3 different clinics of his). I took a speed green reading course done by Tom Talbott and I was making putts much more consistently-my golf partners said that I was "deadly" when putting after taking his course.

As to couples instruction, I haven't done it, nor would I. I would rather focus on what I need to do, and let my wife do the same. Now this is based upon previous experience with my wife and golf lessons. She took group lessons with a girlfriend 25 years ago, after which we went out to play a pitch and putt course. She would ask my opinion as to what she should do on a shot, and when I gave her my opinion, she countered with "that is not what my instructor said". Should she take lessons now, I won't be there-that way if she asks me what she should do on a shot, I can ask her what her instructor thinks. No way I want to fall into that trap again. LOL!

Thanks for the advise Joe. Yes, my game went "in the tank" and I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I had a long layoff due to the rotator cuff surgery, but my shoulder is fine, so thinking that's not the problem. I am also so fed up, I don't want to play anymore, but think know from experience it's probably 1 or 2 things I am doing wrong, but need someone to figure that out. I think a pro looking at a video of my swing could pinpoint it in a few minutes.

I am an engineer and think my learning style is technical and being in certain positions at different parts of my swing. I like to understand the what's and whys of the swing. I loved the book the 8 steps wing.

Save your money on lessons , take a video of a few swings and post it on this site. We can help you! Or at least we think we can. It would probably set the record for views and replies. :bigbow:

I have worked with Sue Ellen at Palmer. She is great!
I recently had rotator cuff surgery and will be going to her when I am ready to resume golf!

I have taken about 8 lessons over the years. In less than 5 swings most teachers have said “ Ok, here is what you need to correct.”
One instructor in The Villages said “ Do you know golf is a one piece takeaway”?
In a few swings I was back. The latest problem last summer “ You are not turning your hips.”
The important thing is to call someone. It might not be the right person but don’t delay. After they set you straight you will be kicking yourself for not going sooner. I’d start with 30 minutes just to be sure your teacher is the right person. Video helps if you are from Missouri.

I agree, Arnold Palmer, 3 30 minute "lessons" with a pro. They will get you back in the "swing" of things. Well worth the money, it worked for me.

Ronda, I suggest you try a 30 minute class with Suellen Northrop at Palmer (352-259-5840). Let her assess your issue and get to know her. Then, longer classes with her would make sense if necessary. There are a lot of good instructors here, but we all have a personal learning style and I found it better to take a short class with someone before investing a lot of time and money with someone. Suellen was a perfect fit for me when I lost my swing. Good luck!

I had lost my swing after rotator cuff surgery in 2018. Went to Mitch Adcock at Palmer - got me back on track. He is very good at diagnosing quickly what you are doing wrong. He played on the tour and is a very nice guy. I would recommend buying one of the 30 minute packages. Good luck on your recovery!

I suggest working from the back end of your game to the front - from putting to short irons to mid irons and lastly (and least important) to teeing off. Our executive courses are the free ticket to getting that part of your game worked out. Maria at Palmer is my wife’s recommendation for lessons.

I was the same way a few months ago. So frustrated that I was going to give the game up. Went to Steve Wresh at the Continental cc on rt 44. He is great. Doesn't try to revamp your entire swing or do something you are not physically capable. He us always having special deals. Now I'm having so much fun. I can even draw the ball!

Stephanie at the golf academy is a great instructor. First encounter with her was at the short game clinic. Liked her so much that a friend and I signed up for private lessons back to back so we could go together for the full hour. We registered for 4 lessons which we could schedule anytime. This was nice cause we could take our time practicing what we learned then schedule when we felt ready to move on. Learned a lot and now that I know what I’m doing I can enjoy the game. I still have the notes she sent after each lesson to remind me of what I need to focus on. Lessons were on sale at the time and well worth the money spent. Even pre-sale they would have been worth the money.

If your serious about lessons and don’t mind a little trip Greg Coffin’s Peak Performance school is great for a cool getaway. Greg will put together one or two day clinics that work on fundamentals or whatever part of your game you need. I prefer one on one for a few hours rather than one hour lessons( I am a beginner). Strong coaching skills and practical guides. Not in The Villages but worth the trip. Good Luck!

I completely agree.

We have a lot of natural coordination and our bodies can do amazing activities (like hit a golf ball) if we give ourselves a chance.

If and when my golf swing is not working, I practice simple shots with a 1/2 or 3/4 swing and just let my natural coordination figure out what it wants to do.

So how do we know a person has natural coordination? Because they inherited it from the parents.

And how do we know their parents and ancestors had natural coordination? Because their parents survived long enough to have children. If our ancestors did not have natural coordination, they would have been killed in battle or they would have starved because they were not able to hunt animals effectively.

I have helped several friends learn to hit a golf ball correctly and consistently, regardless of their skill level, but generally I'm very good with 18-24 handicappers, but have recently helped a 26 year old 6 handicap... There are a few basic swing tips that will immediately help you make better contact consistently... I dont charge anything, I just enjoy helping golfers play better....
Let me know, we can meet at a spot with driving range and areas to chip, putt etc.... BTW I'm left handed, so when teaching, we are facing each other, which makes a huge visual difference! David. 937-529-6549

Listened to me and focused on what I wanted to improve.
The video screen helped, was not over done.
