If it's on their property, I doubt that you can do anything except ask them to remove it.

You will be glad they have it if something happens at your house. Most likely they don't even look at the security camera footage, it's there in case something happens and then they can review the footage.

We recently realized that our neighbor has a security camera that is directed at our front door and lanai. What can we do?

Take a deep breath... Although the camera may SEEM to be angled at your front door and lani, the camera, in fact, is angled to take in their property and street in front of their house. It may take in some of your property, if it does, it's a win-win for you. You never know, one day you may need it. The camera doesn't get that clear of a video by the time it gets to your house.

We also recently added a security camera to our house, it points from our front corner of the house back- viewing our driveway and side door. In this view we can see our neighbors Lani and front of their house. We did this, because we had a renter that brought stuff into our home and it caused major damage(thousands of $) to our home. We could not prove anything...so guess what...all we get from that wonderful renter is his security deposit.
I guess in our case, our neighbor might think we are spying on him...we're not...can't see more that if we were there looking out our window. We just want to protect our property. Just to be clear, we would never consider adding an interior camera...that's probably criminal, but after you go thru what we did.....well it's a bitter and expensive pill to swallow.

Some security cameras only record when there is motion. And, the camera may be too far away to record anything, depending on the motion range setting.

Why would this be a problem for you? There are ring doorbells all over TV that capture houses across the street. Why wouldn't you just think of it as extra protection

I have 2 houses and both have cams on front AND back. Let’s me monitor coming and going at the house and more importantly monitor the landscapers. They don’t record at all, I have to be looking at the phone at the moment. I can see down the street, etc. I don’t think they are doing it to monitor what you are doing at all. I would not worry about it

Some security cameras only record when there is motion. And, the camera may be too far away to record anything, depending on the motion range setting. Ours (driveway and doorbell) records 24/7 and recording is saved to the cloud for IIRC 5 or 6 months. It only notifies me when there is motion but is always recording (YES it uses a LOT of data).

Cheap protection against criminals and others that come on your property. You would be surprised the damage others landscapers can do to your property

I would welcome you to ask to see what exactly the camera sees. You’ll be pleasantly surprised to learn your home is not the focus of the camera. As others have said, you may end up being thankful it’s there.

Exactly, on all points!

Ask to see a screen shot of the camera... just say you are interested in putting in a system of your own. To do any good for your neighbor, the view needs to be pointed down. If you think it's invasive, I would guess your neighbor would have no problem adjusting the angle.

I have two homes in TV. Nice to know right now that all is well... even though it's 41 degrees!

You can’t do anything. Legally he can video anything he can see from the street, sidewalk or his own property. It’s no different if someone walks by and looks at the front door. Make sure your shades are closed and forget it’s even there.

Our 5 outside cameras focus property line back to the house, if a vehicle goes by I can see make, model, color, but driver is non a description.

Across the street Our neighbors pet got out. Asked if we could see her. Pet didn’t set of cameras, but a cart did, catching the time, and her running off to the north.

Anyone’s windows, or lanai is a dark space, so if someone tried to break into their house, I couldn’t help them. But at my house you are clear as a day, even in the dead of night.

Cameras these dayS do not look like cameras and are hidden too. I bet there are more cameras than you realize all over the neighborhood. I agree with houses so close it would be hard not to get another’s home. If you don’t have a camera at least if something did happen you would have proof from your neighbor. My point is, all of us are lucky enough to be here versus “out there” let’s all enjoy it😃

I never thought of putting a camera on our property. Is it recommended? Is there much crime here? We aren't here 100% of the time and may have renters in the future. What are your recommendations?

We feel VERY safe here but we do have two security cameras - one monitoring the front and one monitoring the back. The front catches traffic, but does not detect motion from across the street. The back is angled to view our back lanai and yard. We put these out because we, too, are not here all the time and read concerns about landscapers and lawn spray services not doing what they are being paid to do. So we can now monitor if they show up and do what they are supposed to do. Security is an added benefit, but the only thing we've captured is an unexpected package being delivered one time.

And our back camera does view a very small portion of the neighbor's back lanai - with our "kissing lanais" it was simply not possible to totally avoid it. I did note that our camera could look invasive, and fully plan to talk to the neighbor to let them know that it is pointed at a side angle to our lanai and not spying on them! They do have privacy hedges, so I don't think it will be a concern, but I want to be proactive at fostering good neighbor relations and avoiding misunderstandings!

I have a camera at the front door and lanai. The purpose of them is to deter crime, and provide reviewable recordings should anything improper take place ( they record to the cloud so destroying them will not have erased the recording ). We are not interested in watching the neighbors and do not monitor them live time.

Ask them to keep an eye out for intruders?
Enquire of them what Brand there camera is?
I know, wear a ski mask and slip over at midnight 30 and spray paint the lens. And, spray a nastygram on their front door.
There, that'll fix em by golly.

I like the security, myself. It would not bother me to have a camera pick up my house. I suppose if it was installed by the neighbor to ONLY pick up my house then it would be more like surveillance. Then I would go over and ask them if they are concerned about something?

I can see more from my nook while at breakfast than what my Ring camera picks up. What I was careful about is that the security camera motion lights do not bother any neighbor at any time.

I am having my 2nd exterior camera installed tomorrow(Best Buy-Geek Contract-Ring w/solar Panel). I have a camera that films my “garden”, a camera on top of my fridge so if you break in, I’m watching you and a Ring Doorbell that records my entrance and now I am putting one above the garage door. The Village Geniuses that built these houses with NO exterior lights is mind boggling! My Ring motion detected floodlight will turn on when I pull In /out of my driveway. The camera is a bonus. I am going to make sure the camera is only pointed to the end of my luxuriously long driveway (10 feet?). If you get robbed, please stop in, I hope I captured something but since I live at an intersection I really don’t want alerts going off every 10 seconds. I am not watching my neighbors. I can barely manage to watch myself🙄
