I think it's probably too late to keep TV a secret, but I promise to not mention this place to a soul....Driving home from Home depot WAS a quick ride, maybe 10 minutes most,, now add snowbirds and general traffic and this place is "BONKERS", now 30 minutes.

Like 25 years too late? Get use to it, only going to get worse. You see all apartments popping up around villages like mushrooms? :)

The construction on 441 at Home Depot makes it worse than it usually would be. In 15 years :) if we're lucky when construction is done your trip will go down to 20 minutes. They still have to remove and rebuild that bridge. Start a pool? I'm in and picking the end of 2024!

Well the snowbirds are crowding the streets only because someone allowed a developer to build a massive housing development where they all could sleep. Prevent them from sleeping in your community and they will go away.

I always smile when people complain about traffic. Of course the snowbirds are blamed even know with all the money and support they give. But that aside I have never seen any bad traffic in and around The Villages in my 8 years of visiting and living there. Now when a 20 minute ride on a weekend turns into a 2-3 hour ride during rush hour, now that is traffic. Sitting on a highway and not moving for 5-10 minutes, traffic. Trying to take a short cut and taking 10-15 light cycles to get through is traffic.

For anyone among us that has driven in Mass, NY, DC, LA and probably a dozen other places know traffic. The Villages does not have traffic, sorry.

Anyway, enjoy your time and don’t sweat the little things.

After living and commuting in Houston, I smile at the complaints about traffic. My office was 18 miles from my house, and if I would leave for work at 6:30 am. If there were no accidents, I could arrive between 7:30 and 8:00. And that was traveling the Katy freeway, the largest interstate in the world, at 26 lanes.

My point exactly! We lived north of Detroit in the boonies. I was only 9 miles away from work, but it took 45 minutes to an hour to get to and from work. And when it snowed, 2-3 hours.

I’m so happy to be retired and doing what I want, I don’t even notice traffic.

It's not the snow birds. It's the middle lanes closed down due to construction. You knew about the snow birds before you went. That's like saying "I went to get my teeth pulled out and im suprised it hurt."

Agree. I have driven on the Belt Pkway and Southern State Pkwy on Long Island. Now THAT is traffic. South Florida, starting in Palm Beach, going to Port Miami was a terrifying drive. CRAZY stuff down there. THAT is traffic.

Here in The Villages the traffic is child's play to other parts of this country. It is absolutely wonderful living here even when there are more people and cars on the roads in the winter months.

I do hope the traffic is not as bad as the traffic in Long Island, NY. The traffic seems to be getting worse over the years. I used to work 20 minutes from my home, but because of rush hour traffic, it took me longer. I used to have to take different short cuts and routes because I could not stand the traffic. So happy I am retired from that.

Ditto! I used to leave my home in RI 5:30 AM to commute to the Boston area. By the time I reached RT128/i-95 I was in bumper to bumper/stop& go traffic for miles. It was about a 90 minute drive to and then another 90 minutes back. If there was an accident it has taken as long as 3 hours. I didn’t feel too bad though when some of my co-workers lived in Framingham (12 miles from the office) it took them an hour each way many days of the work week.

Hahahaha! I know a "retirement" area up in Tennessee that refers to 9pm as "Tellico Midnight" since everything shuts down by then and traffic non-existent after.

9pm should be coined "Villages Midnight." Makes perfect sense. Except maybe around the Squares.

We noticed this too during our lifestyle visit in January. We're late eaters, we just don't like to eat early. Went to dinner at Carrabba's about 7:45. When we got there it was maybe 60% full. After we had dinner and a couple beers it was close to 9.
By then we were the only people left, and they were starting to sweep the floors and getting ready to close. LOL
Also the traffic was nonexistant that time of night

But in the end thats going be good for us when we're there. We won't have to wait long for a table. :)

I would guess that probably 95% of them own homes here in the Villages and pay taxes and all the other fees the are charged. What is the problem? It is their choice to live here part time but they pay full time fees. I think we should live and let live. Period.

Without the snowbirds and the $$$$ and business they bring, there wouldn't be a Home Depot for you to drive home from.

Without the snowbirds, businesses could be assured of steady year-round business. Some businesses won’t come here because of the fluctuating population. They have to hire a bunch of temporary help to get through the winter season and then lay them off in the spring. Temporary help is usually not as good as steady help, so service suffers.

Snowbirds aren’t doing us any favors. I would much prefer it if the snowbirds would stay year round. If they did then the infrastructure would be built up to handle the larger steady load. For those of you from big cities, I’m sure you’ve noticed how bad the highways get during rush hour. That’s because roads are built to handle the steady load—not the peak load. Building for peaks is way too expensive.

Please! Stay year round. We’d love to have you. We’d even get a COSTCO then!

BINGO! There's the answer, travel later or early so we all can get along.

Is there a development in or around TV that is developed for "full time residence only"
that doesn't allow snowbirds or allow renters.

No bridge, I think the debate is whether to make the round-about 3 or 4 lanes. After all 2 lane round-about worked so well.:popcorn::popcorn:

3 or 4 lane RABs? That is a joke. Right? I'm already laughing.

Why don't you whine about dog poop, MM lanes, golf carts, cyclists, and the all time favorite golf course condition.
An extra 10 or 20 minutes for a commute is nothing. Most are retired and enjoy being out and about. I5 is not the destination, it is the journey.
I can think of something else to whine about......a whine not mentioned yet. The price of gas and diesel is definitely going up. So, sitting in traffic and idling vehicle engines is going to be extra costly in TV Land and everywhere compared to several months ago. Travel Cruises will cost more, which will affect many Villagers greatly. Most all goods will require increased transportation costs to department stores, food stores, and restaurants. So, those prices will increase. Finally, inflation will hit older Americans more than younger Americans.

Did you ever have the "joy" of driving the Southern State before they took out that ridiculously stupid 10 cent toll booth just past the Valley Stream exit????? Or for that matter dodging the 1 foot deep potholes on the Belt around Bay Ridge? I'll take Morse Blvd any day.

Yes, yes, and agree for sure.

Just because there is no rush hour traffic does not mean there is none. Go drive on 441 today and then again end of May after the last fly back home…..100% difference

Agree to the difference but the worst part in the winter months is still not bad at all. That is what I have been getting at with my posting on this thread.

Hmmmm. Never thought about it this way. Fuel for thought. I tend to agree with this rationale.

OP, wait until BJ’s Wholesale club opens and see how long traffic time will take on the 441/27 corridor. Traffic wise not the place for another big box store IMHO.

That stretch of 441, which I consider my stomping ground, is such a short distance. It takes very little time, traffic and all, to get from one end to the other. What I refer to my stomping ground is Kohl's at the southern end to Walmart/Good Will at the northern end. That small stretch of road is jam packed with retail stores, restaurants and medical buildings including a hospital. Great stuff and I LOVE it here.

Next road project will be making HY 441 3 lanes.

Then we will have a South Florida - University Drive situation. That I will not like, especially during the winter months. That traffic is not nearly as bad as what I had on Long Island but still much worse than what we have in The Villages now.

Seems like that is well underway but taking so so long.

There is not a very long stretch of 3 lanes in either direction, thank goodness we don't need that..........yet.

We always say if you live in Houston, you’re an hour’s drive from Houston.

The far west side is nipping at San Antonio’s eastern outskirts!

Very true. Must some people find something to complain about? Without the growth of TV, we would be driving to Ocala or Leesburg for everything! Relax and enjoy what we have.

That is very true. In 2002 we bought and many trips to Ocala followed.

The construction on 441 at Home Depot makes it worse than it usually would be. In 15 years :) if we're lucky when construction is done your trip will go down to 20 minutes. They still have to remove and rebuild that bridge. Start a pool? I'm in and picking the end of 2024!

The bridges will be removed and and the intersection will allign with CR 25.

I don’t shop either but I don’t think there is anyway to compare Trader Joe’s to Aldi. You have a nicer health food type store and a bargain basement no name brand store.

I agree, ever been out late in the golf cart. Come midnight there is no one out. Park at Walmart late and your the only cart in the parking lot. Find a fast food place open to 11 or later and you are there alone. Then drive home and there are no lights on in any homes. I really should change my timers to turn off lights at 9:05, lol.

I think it's probably too late to keep TV a secret, but I promise to not mention this place to a soul....Driving home from Home depot WAS a quick ride, maybe 10 minutes most,, now add snowbirds and general traffic and this place is "BONKERS", now 30 minutes.

You think it bad here, take trip to Tampa coast south or north or anywhere on east coast of Florida. 3 to 5 lanes and still 60 in front of me to get through stop light. So the 25 or so crossing 466A or 44 breeze to me :)

I have been on 441 a few times and have never seen an issue. Mostly I am on the golf cart though so no issue with traffic. The car stays in the driveway 95% of the time.
I drive on 441 almost everyday. The other day I sat at a light, took the light changing 4 times before I made it through it……..I find that a problem. End of May, end of May can’t get here fast enough

I know you're writing was in jest but the truth of the matter is you will complain about the traffic but you bought here and don't want anyone else to? And then there are other people that complain that all the trees are cut down but they bought their house here on what was pristine Forest 10 or 20 years ago.

That's a lot of wasted gasoline. I always wondered what a calculation would look like if there was a comparison made for the cost of building an extra lane on a highway vs the cost over time of ALL slowed and stopped traffic. Including the cost of gas and diesel AND making people late to work and inconveniencing them?
.......Maybe a State or Federal government should think ahead and take future population growth into consideration. It always seemed like Florida was always behind on building adequate roads. Florida has zero state tax and low property tax, but maybe there is a price to be paid for that long term.
.......Florida has trouble attracting the tech industry, movie industry, and other high-paying industries, in general.

Ocala National Forest is an example, very beautiful. Watch out for Captain Peggy, she takes you on the boat ride up the river and lets you swim in a lagoon type section and THEN points out all the alligators sleeping at the bottom underneath you!

Went to the pool today, lots of people but we were the only homeowners there. We got to hear some amazing stories, maybe worth the traffic.
