Dell - Windows 11 - 1TB optical - 64 ram - i7 12700K
I don't even know how to explain the issue - short vid of problem linked below.
Basically, when I click on a folder (music in this case) the list of songs appear....and then they one by one disappear until all are gone then they reappear and are able to be clicked on. This takes about 20 seconds for 30 files - should only take a split second!!!
Imagine my shock and horror given this unit is only days old (meaning I haven't loaded the drive with slow down garbage yet) and probably the fastest processor in the world (that's what I told the wife to justify the purchase - please don't bust my bubble).
Yes, I do have free dell help but I'm trying to avoid the long phone time. Plus deep down I know it has to be something simple. Head hung in shame, computers are not part of my wheelhouse.
What tweak to do I need to make or did I just goof really bad and should of bagged a Lenovo?

I have not seen that issue. The first thing I would try is to move the folder to the D drive. Also, make sure your Windows software has been updated. Good luck.

I've also never seen this behavior. I would suggest to first make sure windows is totally up to date by running windows update. Have you installed any software? Uninstall it and see. Finally, do a fresh install of windows.

You would have been better off with an Apple iMac or Mac Book with the new M1 processor or if you wait a week or so the new M2 processors may be released. I worked in the Windoze world as an IT specialist. When I retired the Windoze computers were also retired I switched to Macs and have never looked back. Well I have to shake my head on the continual headaches Windoze machines give to their users.
Windows mis-spelling is intentional.

Around Dec 2021 / Jan 2022 there were several articles about slow SSD performance and a Windows 11 KB5007262 update. You might want to look at some of those to see if that update is a possible solution.

Bingo - I believe it's resolved. I'd been "sleeping" the computer repeatedly over several days. I turned off....then on again and no more problem. Not sure if sleeping it had anything to do with the fix...but I'm back to believing I have the worlds fastest desktop.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to ping in. I enjoy this forum cause one is never alone when problems pop up - the support is wonderful!

Glad you got it fixed. By the way, I have an HP I7 desktop with Windows 11 and it is fast. I only restart my computer about once a week or so, but I never use the sleep mode. I just let the screen go blank automatically after a few minutes. I think this is safe as long as you need to use a PIN to go back to the Windows home screen. Also, I store most data files, like music, on the D drive or on an external drive, not on the C drive. I have the Windows security setting on "Medium High" not "High". You may want to consider subscribing to Microsoft 365 for about 70 dollars per year. It will give you access to Microsoft Office on several devices, and it will also give you 1TB of cloud storage using OneDrive. OneDrive can be set up to automatically upload and/or update files that you change to the cloud that you can access from any internet device. I have about 500GB of music stored on the OneDrive cloud.

If its Microsoft....its bound to be buggy. That company has a decades long practice of overpromising and underdelivering. If I count up all the hours I have spent dealing with Microsoft's upgrades and products to even make them work minimally, I would realize I have spent many years of my life addressing the failures of this company. At one time the US government sought to break up this monopoly. They lost because Microsoft was just too big for the government. In my opinion, this is a company that needs to be broken into tiny little pieces. Can't you tell.....I hate Microsoft and all of its "improvements" and "upgrades".

Gotta push back a little on this one. My wife is an apple fanatic, but she spends a good chunk of time banging her head against the wall in frustration with one issue or another. Usually with uncooperative apps and trying to live in an online world that is 75% Windows based. Meanwhile, I have been humming along with Windows 10 for years with zero issues and with some big, complex apps (Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.) they NEVER fail. These are all the stand alone versions so all the work in on my desktop - Intel I5, 32 gigs ram, high-end graphic card (can't remember which one).
I'm not knocking Apple computers (they are pretty and come is cool boxes) but they do have their drawbacks if you are trying to get work done in the real world.

Too much money for an aluminum anchor. Depends what you want to do with a computer whether you want an Apel or Windoze. Been in both worlds and the each have their issues. One is plastic and one is overpriced aluminum.

files on a drive require an index otherwise when the heads read the disc they read it 'in order' indexing gives a better "fast disk" impression however is merely a bandaid of future things to come. Opticals aren't fast like SSD, they are slow. Indexing will mask over what you have in your video, because it's caching an index for current use.

Long career working with Apple and Microsoft, primarily storage, server, and graphic products. I'm a serious user of both.
In this case, first time access of a lot of files, the indices simply needed to be rebuilt, especially if storage was on an older operating system.
Even more time if connected to the cloud, and files and folders needed to be synchronized.
I use Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Amazon cloud services, in addition to local direct connect hard drives, and local home server.
Until everything gets synced, there can and will be delays. Same happens when iPad, Samsung tablet, and both Apple and Android smartphones are connected for the first time.
As for which platforms are "better", that's a tough one to answer. Each has plusses and minuses, and is highly dependent of what you are doing.
Storage products I've been responsible for sit on the shelves in Apple Stores worldwide, as well as other major retailers online and at brick and mortar locations.
I will say one thing, though: the state of software development for apps and the operating systems is worrisome. Between security and bugs, things could be better. Some new problems are simply new features that confound all of us at times.
Good luck to all!
PS remember to backup! Have at least two copies of everything. I have backups local as well as in the cloud.

Although I consider myself sort of a geek, I did not upgrade to Windows 11 for the same reason—a different desktop. I have yet to see a complete tutorial outlining the major differences between Windows 10 and Windows 11. It took awhile for me to move to Windows 10 and learn all of its quirks. Now that I have done so, I will wait until all of the “bugs” are fixed before I do. If you bought the computer already loaded with the new operating system, I would contact the seller or buy a cheap tutorial explaining the major differences between the two. In fact, there should be some kind of tutorial already loaded on your new computer. If you can afford to do so, I recommend that you buy an iMac. It works just like an iPhone. It’s quite a change from a PC, but Apple is far superior to Microsoft.

Indexing creates a special file so that Windows can easily know where all your other files are. In other words an index.

I upgraded to Windows 11 in October, when it first came out. No issues so far. I really haven't noticed much difference from Windows 10, even with the desktop, except the Start button has been moved from the left side of the task bar to the center. Also, when you press the Start button, you get a popup window with additional program icons that you can add to or delete. I understand that you can now use widgets and Android apps, but those are things I have not tried. Overall, I would recommend upgrading.

Having worked on computers before Bill Gates was born, I've worked on MANY different operating systems. My first PC ran DOS, then, reluctantly, I went to Windows (3.1). When we moved here we had rental property, so we used Quicken (so had to keep Windows 7). A few years back I discovered LINUX, tried it and liked it. When we sold the rental property I converted my 10 year old Dell to LINUX MINT and never looked back. It runs faster than it ever did on Windows. I've converted about a dozen people here in The Villages to LINUX and, so far, they haven't asked to go back to Windows.

Ditch Microsoft Office and switch to LibreOffice. It's open source from the folks who brought the world Sun Microsystems and Oracle. It's compatible with MS Office, more robust, fewer bugs, with tons more functionality. They have another software suite called OpenOffice that's similar, with less functionality than LibreOffice (so it's about the same as MS Office).

You got me beat. I wrote my first (in BASIC) in 1978. Dummy terminal, program came out on ticker tape (not punch cards), divide by zero was an actual problem, goto was sometimes a nightmare, and the "hard drive" was a couple of things that looked like refrigerator cases in an air conditioned room next door to the computer lab, with reel to reel tape.

I had similar indexing issues a couple of years ago on Windows 10. I resolved it by turning “off” indexing in Windows. Indexing is not helpful for most people … My file access time is still lightning fast. But I am not trying to synch across multiple machines or the cloud. So your experience may vary. But it is easy to turn on/off.
I have used Windows & Microsoft products since Dos 1.0. But I rarely use my 2018 Dell Optiplex any more …. Because I know when I turn it on that I will be forced/coerced by Microsoft to install all the recent updates (and reboot 3 or 4 times in the process) before I can complete the small task I wanted to do on my Dell
I agree with others, use OpenOffice in place of MS OFFICE. Its smaller, lighter, faster and compatible.
As for Linux, there is lots you can do with it … and lots you can’t if you are expecting to do everything that Windows huge app base is capable of.
I now use my ipad for 90% of my computing/data/music needs. And use the Dell for the remaining 10% (because its not possible on the ipad)

In fact, there should be some kind of tutorial already loaded on your new computer. If you can afford to do so, I recommend that you buy an iMac. It works just like an iPhone. It’s quite a change from a PC, but Apple is far superior to Microsoft.
I moved from an 7 yo lenovo thinkpad with windows 8 to my current. I just jumped in and continue to hope for the best. I just don't use a system enough to justify the imac buy in plus I have other learning curves that I need to master...

Interesting....

Have had dell for years, i have two right now, what model did you buy?
The description could be different models. . .
XPS 8950 with most of the innards beefed up. Ordered early dec but delays resulted in a delivery 2 weeks ago.

Thanks OBB for that - will investigate.

XPS 8950 - this is how I would configure your tower:
12th Generation Intel® Core™ i9-12900K (30MB cache, 16 cores, 24 threads, 3.20 to 5.20 GHz Turbo)
laptop
Windows 11 Pro, English
videocard
NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3080, 10 GB GDDR6X, LHR
memory
64 GB, 2 x 32 GB, DDR5, 4400 MHz; up to 128 GB (add'l mem sold separately)
harddrive
1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)
fallbackcolor
750W Platinum Silver Bezel Chassis including optical drive
Liquid cooling
$3,512.99
This is comparable to my laptop 6 years years ago, for a lesser price. My laptop was $4,000 +/- for the equivalent cutting edge back then. Should easily last you 5+ years, which all high end computers should last these days.
BTW, i picked the liquid cooling which keeps the CPU much cooler. However, the liquid can evaporate in 3-4 years, so I had to replace that in the home built tower. however, I have used high end laptops for 15 years, and much prefer taking it with me whenever I want, versus a tower. .
good luck

One of the nice things about switching from MS Office to Open (or Libre) Office is they share many of the same conventions. I'm a keyboarder rather than a mouse user. I have a mouse, and use it of course. But I was trained on a computer keyboard before mouses were available so that's my strength.
Copy and paste: Highlight, ctrl-v, ctrl-c
Print: ctrl-p, enter
Save: ctrl-s
Bold: highlight, ctrl-b
Clicking "alt" brings down menus.
All of those keyboard commands work the exact same from MS to OO/LO.

That's close to what I ended up with....
i7-12700k
64 ram
1tb SSD & 1TB sata
geforce 3060 8gb
I did go with liquid cooled - so I'll be refreshing the antifreeze once a year

NOT FIXED - still looking for any suggestions...
You click on the folder.
Computer looks at folder, reads content, indexes all files, then displays the indexed list for your selection.
All that takes time.
Probably large files, and a large number of them. Leave the folder active, and the next time you display it, it likely will work much quicker.
Make sure your BIOS, and your hardware drivers are up to date. Write down the express service service code and service tag numbers, go to Dell’s website, select support, enter the numbers, follow the prompts, download the recommended files, and execute.

My first computer program was in 1979 with APL (who remembers THAT language?) with a timesharing service and Anderson-Jacobsen acoustic couplers to connect... :D

No disrespect to you, but I never click on any links posted on this page - having said that, is your music on iTunes? If so, just add your Apple account and pin the icon to your desktop. Whenever you wanna play your music, just click on the apple icon.
I am using Windows 10, and have no intention of ever moving to 11.

Understand completely. I never click either...until two conditions are met. If an established/known to me member originated the link - my guard goes down 50%. If others in the thread have referenced the link - with no warning of contamination - my guard turns off and link turns on.
It was on itunes. But long story short - I lost my established itunes library information, links, ratings, playlists, etc but of course not the songs themselves. That happened on my windows 8 laptop in november.
I moved to a windows 11 desktop a couple of weeks ago. Am about to rebuild - from scratch - my itunes library.
I rarely ever listen to music in my office off the computer - 99% via iphone.
I'm not a fan of itunes. Folks here have suggested alternatives to itunes - and I researched alternatives....but was unable to find a management program that organized/integrated with iphone as well as iTunes does. So, I'm going back to itunes.
I don't stream music. I obtain my own music files and build lists with those.
I haven't synced my iphone since last november cause my playlists remained on the phone and I didn't want to take a chance of losing that cache of music during a sync session....cause, like so many of us - I need my music to get me through the day!!!!

If your Windows 10 computer is eligible for a Windows 11 upgrade, I would recommend doing it. I have been using it for 5 months on my desktop and laptop and have had no issues. You can use widgets and install apps from the Amazon store. I think it also allows better interface with your cell phone, if you want to do that. The desktop looks and works almost exactly like Windows 10.
