Think you missed the point. Not like film vs digital. It is about junk mail disposal responsibility. Take your junk mail home and put it in your trash. The receptacles at the postal stations are not dumpsters for your household trash, which is what junk mail is.

OP, please explain this thread. There are signs to tell you to not put animal feces in the trash cans. There are 5 trash cans at my mail station. You are telling us to not put junk mail into the trash cans, and that it is rude. So, please explain what is the purpose for having 5 trash cans at a mail station. Since, I am paying for them and for someone to empty them, I would like to use them. But, I have no idea how to do that. How am I supposed to use the trash cans that I am paying for?

I understand the chastising if the trash can is completely full but it is there for that reason.

Villagers already compromise by having to travel a mile or more to get their mail. That saves enormous labor costs. So the least they can do is provide trash cans adequate enough to handle the discarded mail.

Just one question----who is "they"????

Would that be the United States Postal Service which is the entity that "saves enormous labor costs"? Or are you suggesting that it should be that "evil, greedy developer" that needs to babysit mature adults to guide them into correct behavior???

Let's see----maybe 5 pieces of junk mail each for 800 homes = 4,000 pieces of mail stuffed into a few trash cans, overflowing often, OR, just maybe, a homeowner transports 5 ounces of mail home and the load is divided 800 ways. I also question how many homes are "a mile or more" away from their postal station. I'm sure there are some, but not many.

Lots of people do that. And then they whine about how expensive those advertisers' products are. Murika, amirite?

Meanwhile, back at the postal station: trash cans are for trash. Junk mail is trash. The only time that's a problem, is when the can is full and people pile more on top of an already-full can. Often, they can EASILY get more in that trash can by simply placing their largest piece of junk mail flat on the top of the pile, and using a closed fist, pressing the entire pile DOWN deeper into the can. They don't have to touch anyone else's stuff, just that one piece of their own mail.

I do this often. Turns out - most of the time, that bag isn't even half-filled and there's PLENTY of room for more.

Who tells people not to use the trash cans for junk mail? I've never been told this by anyone although I have heard complaints about it. Our mail station has not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4 trash cans! I'm guessing they are for junk mail since I don't know why else they would be there!? Now the person who left his/her junk mail just lying on top of the trash can probably could have taken a few steps to another can and disposed of the junk mail properly. Junk mail is a problem. It is usually advertising or solicitations. It is generated because it works. If it did not produce a return greater than the cost, advertisers and solicitors would cease using it. It wastes resources and pollutes our environment. (over flowing trash cans with loose papers and plastics blowing into the ponds and neighborhoods.) Easiest solution might be to take it home and put unwanted mail in home trash. Same as not unwrapping unwanted packaging and leaving it at the store.
In truth, rather than trash cans, dumpsters would allow those that don't want to take junk mail home, a more practical size receptacle for that purpose. Problem then is that some would use them for excessive household trash and junk (old chairs, broken lamps, used auto filters, etc).
Fact is, this is just my opinion. I am not the trash police. Just a neighbor who likes his neighborhood and would like to keep it nice for everyone.

Common sense would be to not leave the mail as in that photo. It could blow all over the place. This mail trash has been discuss before on this site. I actually met the man that empties our trash cans one day doing his job. I asked him if it was ok to leave junk mail in the trash or should I just take it home. His answer surprised me. He said to please put it in the trash can at the postal station. He then told me that he empties our cans every day and they would cut his hours if there was not enough trash to collect. I never realized it was emptied every day. I don't know how often your trash is emptied, but I'm going to put mine in our postal trash to keep this man working. Support your postal trash collector!

Some people claim that the Post Office makes money delivering junk mail. I find that hard to believe. If it is true, then why don't private companies deliver junk mail? The solution is for the Federal Government to charge their actual cost to deliver all mail, especially junk mail that damages the environment.

I was never told not to put unwanted mail in the cans. I can’t find such a sign. Were you so instructed? By whom? If it’s a rule, I’ll follow it. Question: If they are not intended for mail, then why 5 cans? ā€œoff siteā€ trash could be problematic. I think maybe they just might be for unwanted mail and I will continue to place mine there. If you want my address, it’s also in the phone book, many places on the web and at the county offices.

Can’t we just ask nicely to make sure your trash is properly disposed before we walk away. That might be a more productive post.

Sorry I’m a bit edgy. I am a rule follower and I feel that maybe this isn’t really a rule and I’m being duped. Happy to find out differently if in fact it is a rule.

Hey !!! IT'S JUNK MAIL...... I didn't ask for it, but the post office delivered it to me. So I just give it back to them.....in their trash can. Sometimes I take it home, but if it's only one or two in a small pack of mail, then I throw it in their trash can. But if the trash can is full, then I bring it home for sure.

I take my junk mail home & tear it up and put it in my garbage can at home. I am not interested in having my personal information robbed and/or some creep going through those mail station garbage cans just waiting to steal my identity or casing my house to possibly rob it. It DOES happen here in the ā€œBubble.ā€

People are told to not put DOG WASTE in the trash cans. If people didn’t put junk mail in them, there would be no need for trash cans there at all.

Putting animal waste in the postal cans was a NO-NO when we had recycling in place. Now that ALL waste in being collected AND being burned, who cares from which receptable dog poop is being collected...postal cans or residence trash??? Get a life people!! Who cares???

It seems to me that the reason they are there is to prevent people from throwing their junk mail on the ground. But I have seen people take trash out of their car and golf cart and put it in the canI disagree. Are told by whom? My mail station on has 5 of those trash cans. They are obviously located there for junk mail. What else are people supposed to use them for? If they are not for junk mail, then remove them and save money. Nobody ever told me not to put junk mail in them. I will continue to use those trash cans for junk mail, like most logical people do.

I always strike out my name/address (and sometimes account number) with a black marker on any and all mail before I pitch them... these days you cannot trust anyone (sadly).

If they can get my name and address from a mailing list, I don't care if they go through the trash to find it because when they send me mail it will receive the same treatment.

Peace!

The problem with junk mail is not HOW we dispose of them, in my opinion. But that they fill up my mailbox in the first place. I know, I know, they subsidize mail delivery, but then they expect me to deal with it. Repeat junk mail from the same source often amounts to harassment. We would block it on our phone.

I understand what you're saying. It makes complete sense. But I think the people who use the trash cans should make sure their items are put in the trash cans - not laid on the top or on the ground where they can blow away. A trash can keeps trash collected so it doesn't look like everyone just threw it on the ground. The trash cans are a convenience to residents and should be used appropriately.

I have not seen ours overflowing in over 2 years here. If it is happening, then maybe bigger and more cans. Better than junk be thrown there than on the street.

I make it a point to sort our mail, and anything that might be useful to ID thieves (offers by banks, etc.) get taken home and shredded. Anything like coupons we never use get put in the can.

To clarify, that is not what the OP said. The OP didn't say there was only one trash can (most mail stations have several). The OP did say that it is "really rude" to place junk mail into a trash can. Not true. The photo only shows a few pieces of mail on top of the trash can, but it looks like there was room to stuff it into the can, and whoever placed it there probably should have done so.

Trash! And some say there are no stupid questions.

A lot of folks visit the stations, not only to pick up their mail, but to make use of the amenities that are usually found there as well. Workers visit for many reasons as well. All may have trash to discard. As stated in an earlier post, if we all sorted mail and packages at the stations, it would probably require a dumpster to adequately hold all the trash. Personally, I prefer to pick up my mail and leave and sort it at my leisure at home as opposed to trying to sort in the heat, wind or rain.

That way it doesn't blow all over the place, which is what the OP did right? Well, they did do the right thing and throw it in another trash can, after they took the picture, right? Sorry, but until someone explains to me the purpose of the trash cans at the postal boxes, if not for trash I will use them to dump my junk mail if I wish to. I suppose they could be there to clean out one's car. Or, maybe those that are sitting in the lot eating their lunch could use it for their sandwich wrappers. I don't get the Sun or the News so I guess it doesn't pertain to me.

The junk mail goes into the "TRASH" whether it stays at the postal boxes or whether it goes home, so there is no difference. Complaining about what others do in their day to day lives is ludicrous and boorish. Dumping trash is "trash" cans does no harm. If they do not wish one to deposit trash in trash cans, they should remove them. OR, they could put a sign on them stating that trash cans are for decoration only. Although things may seem apparent, logical and obvious, at times obvious and logical may not apply. There are questions about the trash containers at the postal stations. I actually discovered the correct usage. I was at Burger King recently. I was sitting outside having a burger, fries and coke. When I was finished I was ready to discard the trash in the trash container near the eating area. After all, isn’t that what they’re there for? However, before doing so I noticed a sign that read ā€œDo not discard, in these trash containers, food items, food containers, wrappers, bags, plastic eating instruments or beverage containers. For these items please use the trash containers located at your postal stations. These containers should only be used for junk mail. Thank you.ā€ So, there you go, your question is finally answered. Apparent, obvious and logical do not always apply. Of course if you don’t do Burger King you’re still faced with a dilemma.

I am of two minds about putting the junk mail in the out mail box. That is what you are supposed to do, but first you cross out your address and indicate that you want to return it to the sender. How else will the sender know you don’t want their mail? On the other hand, if everybody did that at the same time, it would overwhelm the postal worker. Maybe send one item back each day?

Of course our problems are first world problems. Why are people saying that? They are not Martian problems. We are not Martians.

You are right. Junk mail is trash.

You are aware of the terms "First World Country" and Third World Country", aren't you?

Yes, but why would someone be surprised that people in the first world have first world problems? To me it sounds odd. It’s a bit like a female having ā€œfemaleā€ problems. Or the Ukrainians have Ukrainian problems. I guess I am not used to the term.

Then you don't understand the premise...

In first world countries, "first world problems" pale in comparison the those in third world countries...

CFrance not making work for the PO but what are they suppose to do with something they don’t want? I do understand the PO are just delivering mail, but you didn’t say why they’re trash cans sitting there. It’s for trash just like we have in our homes! Not trying to pick a fight but I still put things I don’t ask for in the outgoing mail. Then what do you suppose the PO does with it?

What about "second world countries"? They always seem to get left out. šŸ˜

I see, the term tries to demean first world people…. Interesting. And that is not political? English is not my first language, so I miss nuances sometimes.

I take all my mail home and sort it where I can destroy my name and address on junk mail. I don’t want my name and address in postal station trash can.

Some people claim that the Post Office makes money delivering junk mail. I find that hard to believe. If it is true, then why don't private companies deliver junk mail? The solution is for the Federal Government to charge their actual cost to deliver all mail, especially junk mail that damages the environment.

The federal government does not run the post office.

Semantics. The Post Office is not a private company and could not operate without Federal funding and control.
