I was wondering if anyone has seen "Freddy" the big gator that lived in the Riley Grove pond on the Palmer course. We would see him swimming or sunning himself on the sandbar as we drove our golf cart down the buena vista trail. Is he still around?

For those of you who have not seen this before, here's a photo of him back in August when we were there.

Hope he hasn't been "removed."

Last year, I think it was, there was information here that when an alligator reaches a certain size, it is removed.

Please remember that as much of a novelty as they are to look at, alligators are not your friends.

Some years ago, a couple of my employees and I were in South Florida on business. As we crossed the everglades we wanted to see alligators. We stopped at a local restaurant and the lady gave us some marshmallows and said to go across the road and toss them in the water.

As we did that, there was this old (like 85 year old) guy fishing at the side of the swamp. What he said is stuck in my head forever. He said, "You boys can do what you like. I've been trampin' around these glades all my life. I don't trust NO gator'".

Wasn't there something awhile back about a large gator around Palmer that got out and caused some trouble and hurt itself so bad biting a police car that it had to be put out of it's misery, ie SHOT.

There is another real good sized one I call Ralph. He's in the pond heading down Buena Vista towards 466a right after the Lake Miona Rec center. He's not as big as "Freddy" but he's always visble on the sandbar!!:pepper2:

Where is the best spots in TV to see an alligator (not up close haha). I have been down there several times and have seen plenty of birds, lizards, and snakes but no gators.

Wife and I were walking on the boardwalk in front of the Waterfront Inn the other day and one was about 20 feet out in the water. All we could see was the head, but it was a pretty good size. It was pacing us as we walked. Some idiot or idiots have probably been feeding it.

I remember walking near a pond at John Chestnut Sr. Park in Palm Harbor, FL and approaching a picnic table. On top of which sat two 50ish gentlemen. They pointed out the 10 or so foot alligator eyeing them from the water's edge of the pond about 12 feet away.

They said that the previous picnickers must have been feeding that alligator. As soon as the gator spotted another likely source of food it got out of the water quickly. That's when they both climber on top of the picnic table an hour before my arrival.

The nearby Lake Tarpon which has a boat ramp and various vistas in John Chestnut Sr. Park has several thousand if not more alligators in it.

The pond I was at had had a 14 foot alligator but some tourists had taken to trying to take pictures of it while riding on its back so the park rangers decided it was to big for the park and too much of a risk for the park. They destroyed the 14 footer.
