Beware of the Chop House. On Friday March 5th we had a birthday celebration at the Chop House. Our table was ready at the reserved time and we were greeted by our server. I ordered the catch of the day which was sword fish along with potato and broccoli. When our meals were delivered, mine was not. The server said that it was not prepared as I ordered and it would be out soon. It finally arrived (partially) when everyone else had eaten almost half or more of theirs. The broccolli was not on the plate and it would be out momentarily. It actually never came. The final insult was when the bill was presented. The charge for the sword fish was $38.00 for a relatively small portion. We know that prices are rising but to get poor service at a premium price is very disappointing.

Probably best to order a chop at the Chop House and swordfish at Blue Fin.

:ohdear: Next time ask the price if you don't see it.

Just a general statement we eat out frequently in The Villages. Last week we stayed with vacationing friends in Orlando ate out every night including Disney Springs. Prices were very reasonable as compared to here and portions generous. Convenience is great but a week away from the bubble I feel we are being taken for a ride. Only an opinion.

We had a somewhat similar experience: VERY tough chateaubriand, a broccoli side that was mush, lukewarm coffee (twice) and barely so-so service. If we were charged $50- to $70 I'd have been a little peeved at most. However for a total price of $150 + for two people...well, we expected a lot better. This was on a Friday night, by the way, which meant the A team was on the floor.
We won't be going back. We patronize instead the Legacy Restaurant at Nancy Lopez. Top-of-the-line service, generous portions no matter when you go, and excellent fare: their chateaubriand was melt-in-your-mouth tender and far more flavorful than that served up by Chop House.

We have been once with no plans to return. Would rather go to Texas Roadhouse.
Anyway you should have received a reduced price especially since you never go your full meal. Not a good way to run a business.

Having owned and operated restaurants for many years , I feel qualified to chime in, kitchens are geared to prepare menu items as printed ,when “special” requests are made it screws up the flow of production, just order as the menu describes it with a lot less disappointment. Special requests are usually handled properly.

I had the worst steak ever at the chop House so I will never order steak from there again. The chicken dish was excellent and Ahi Tuna appetizer is fabulous. I will stick to those two dishes when I go there. If I complain to the manager they would take it off the bill and I don't want them to do that. One time I pointed it out after I paid the bill and was walking out the door and the manager and I had to go back and forth because he wanted to take it off the bill. Restaurants have suffered so much in the past that I'd rather just stick to what I find good and that's it.

If you are on Facebook it’s best to check in to the establishment on Facebook then comment. The manager will see it and most likely respond.

We eat at ChopHouse 3 to 4 times a month. I have never had a bad meal there. Lat week they had a nice size New England lobster tail with 2 sides for $38. Their prime meat is excellent.
I find it odd somebody would order a meal without asking the price.

I agree! Everyone has an occasional bad day. I have always had great food and service at not only Chop house, but most every restaurant in TV.
Also there is a very big shortage of help for business everywhere. My friends and I attempted to have dinner last night at Gators in Brownwood. The place was less than half full. When I asked for a table, they said it would be 30-35 min. Because of shortage of kitchen help. She apologized and said it was tough for her too because she is a server and she relies on tips.
Soooo…. BE PATIENT! I’m sure the restaurant want you to have a great experience every time but as we all know…💩 Happens!!!

very very first world problem. . .
labor shortage with HUGE competition 45 mins to 1 hr south, with better tips. . as compared to the fixed income retirement crowd. The younger, more money hungry labor has moved on to better wages as the employment market opened back up. Its what they do. .
population growth of retirees growing faster than quality labor supply for local vendors. . when will people learn than the hardest to manage in a free market is fast growth, and here is no different.
Throw in some huge gas prices and disposable income drops quickly, some will be cash flow negative for the current job with driving involved and low wages. . what do you recommend for them to continue to serve you?
40 years of relative peace and prosperity has been upended, and life style is changing, time to adapt or at least tolerate the occasional hiccup.

Very true the time to fix it is when you are still at the restaurant.
All the OP is trying to do is hurt the restaurant and its employees.

Doesn't sound like a petty complaint to me. I like knowing about other people's experience. And social media is an easy way to share that experience. Isn't that the purpose of TOTV? The OP was not getting back at them.
Our visits at the Chop House have been mixed. Some good, some not so good.

I went to Chop House -- pre-Covid. The atmosphere and service were excellent, however the steak was not good and the price was $48. I lived in the NYC metro area and had better steaks at local restaurants for $12 to $20. I do not mind paying a higher price for a restaurant meal but I expect the quality of the meal to be excellent. I have not been back to Chop House.

It shouldn’t matter what you order. Fish is on the menu and so is the higher price. It should have been just as great as steak. Not everybody wants steak in a party of two or more thus the reason fish is there. This restaurant is just so-so. I had mediocre food there and a bad experience with service and seating. Manager was made aware but did nothing to encourage us to come back. Would never go back.

We retired here as full time residents from downtown Chicago and miss dining at restaurants that offer high quality fresh food. We have eaten at Chop House and feel the food quality is mediocre and the prices are high for what you get. We go to Ocala, Orlando, and Winter Garden for dinner if we want fine dinning or better portions with fresh ingredients like Cheesecake Factory or AYCE sushi, fresh Octopus salad, served to the table (this is not a buffet) or Sarasota's Der Dutchman an Amish restaurant (all home made including the rolls, pie, chicken, ham, turkey and many salads) your choice of either buffet dining, ala carte dining or family style. Pasta Faire in Summerfield has great daily specials at very reasonable prices and we like Oakwood. We had seriously thought of moving but we love our activities, our home and the beauty of TV. The 2 things we don't like about TV is health care and dining. Maybe the rents are higher and restaurants need to charge more for less or maybe they are trying to make up for the loss of income they have during the summer months. If anyone can tell me what restaurants offer fresh, healthy not institutionally prepared food from Sam's Club or Gordon Food Service in TV I would love to know. Too Jays used to be good but since bought by new parent company their quality has gone down. I ordered a corned beef sandwich and there was hardly any meat on the sandwich. Another option is to go on an Oceania cruise every once and a while. The food on the European cruise was better than any meal I have ever eaten even in Chicago, San Francisco or New York.

The price for swordfish is not on the menu. Several menu items are listed as "MKT". How hard would it be to list the price for everything, or at least tell people who order it what the price is?

The swordfish was that day's special so it would not be on the menu. The several steaks that state market price are prime and the price fluctuates. A restaurant is not going to print a new menu every day. I always ask the price of specials and the price of the steaks that are market if I am going to order one. I don't understand how a customer would not request the price and then complain about the price.

Agree 100%!! The old saw of "don't order fish at a meat house" is out dated for even average restaurants. Fish on the menu is the restaurant telling the customer that they know how to prepare it correctly. If they can't, then they have no business putting it on the menu in the first place. It also is not a case of wanting fish. Many folks have other reasons where meat may not be a dietary option. No excuses for poor food production.

Some have referred to the Chop House as a "steak house". If you got to an actual steak house such as Morton's, Ruth's Chris, Flemings, etc.and ask them what is their best steak, the answer is the rib eye.
Chop House doesn't have a rib eye on the menu. Only 3 types of steaks on the menu. It's not even close to being considered what one would call a steak house.

If you are such a steak aficionado then it is surprising that you did not acknowledge that often a Delmonico steak *is* a rib eye. Not always, but often, and perhaps that is what Chop House is serving. Now if a Chop House rib eye/Delmonico is better than any rib eye you have eaten in the top steak houses then that says a lot about the Chop House.

From the Google Machine: "The ribeye comes from the rib section, while the Delmonico is cut from the short loin that lies back of the ribs but ahead of what we now call the sirloin area"...
Sounds like they are not the same thing at all...

Depends which Google Machine you use: "Sure, "the Delmonico" is attributed to several cuts of meat, depending on whom you ask. But these days, it's the rib-eye steak that's most frequently used interchangeably with the term "Delmonico steak."
Sounds like frequently, but not always, a Delmonico *is* a rib eye.
But hey, let's say the Chop House actually uses a lesser cut of meat for their Delmonico. *If* that is the case then it says even more about the Chop House that they can take that lesser cut and prepare it better than the rib eye served in the top steak houses.

Why would you title this thread as “Beware”? That implies some devious deed or scam. Nothing scammy or devious about your experience. This price may have been high, but then again, you didn’t ask. Yes they screwed up on the broccoli. Just a mistake. At least they caught the error on the swordfish preparation and recooked it instead of delivering a poorly prepared dish to the table, hoping you wouldn’t catch it or complain.

My girlfriend and I ate there last night. Everything was perfect from the food to the service. I suggest you give it one more try.

We had a $42.00 rib eye that was a disappointment. This was before beef prices soared.

Never been to the Chop House. Not likely to go since we have many we know and like already. This is an interesting thread though.
The most expensive meal I ever purchased was a lobster dinner for the gal I was dating at the time. She liked the lobster so much, she married me and I'll never finish paying for that dinner. And the most expensive dinner I ever purchased was also the best purchase I ever made.

Well, two actually but who's counting? I said sometimes, you said never, the readers can decide which was more accurate.
If Delmonico's, the restaurant the Delmonico steak was named after, uses ribeye as their "Delmonico" steak then that's good enough for me.

No more Chop House for us…. The last two times was very disappointing so we won’t be going back.
To me, The Chop House is WAY overrated….. same category as the WAY overrated Rose Plantation !!
I agree. Have had some good meals and great bar. But too many bad meals. Everyone raves about pork ribeye but it was inedible twice. Duck was great but steak were mediocre. For those prices I would rather go to Marks Prime in Ocala or Ruth's Chris or Capital Grill in Orlando. I'm done with Chop House. Outback is better.

From the Google Machine: "The ribeye comes from the rib section, while the Delmonico is cut from the short loin that lies back of the ribs but ahead of what we now call the sirloin area"...
Sounds like they are not the same thing at all...
Show me where I said "never"... I'll wait...
Hope I didn't make you wait too long.

My next question is how does the CH cook their steaks? I don't recall double high temperature broilers being imported to the location when it changed hands. So are all the wonderful steaks there merely pan fried"
Perhaps all of you CH steak experts can try to get an answer from one of the waiters?

I just want to say that my wife and I celebrated our anniversary there several months ago, (pre-covid). The server was very attentive, the food was excellent. We have intentions of going back again, hoping to have the same experience. By the way, the price was what one would expect for great service and good food.

After reading OP and several replies I ask this question - did you ask to speak to the manager? FMK has a good reputation and have never been unhappy with food or service at any of the restaurants. If food, service not to my liking I ask to speak to manager.
