I am about to buy a new television when I get to the Villages next week. What is the difference between LCD and LED? Yes, I know that LED's are more expensive...but is it worth the extra $$$? I'd rather buy the less expensive format but is the tradeoff that much of a downgrade?

Sounds like they are better than standard LCD TV's - wait a couple years and they will probably be standard or pay more now.

The problem is--- WE NEED A Television NOW! Not so sure wifey will want to wait a few years. She can't live without Oprah and The Shopping Channel.

Tom - It's a difference in backlighting. "LED TVs" are really just LCD TVs that use LEDs for backlighting instead of fluorescent lighting.

Here's a pretty good explanation of the pros and cons:

We bought a Samsung LED TV about 2 years ago and couldn't be happier with it...............other than what we paid for it then versus what the same thing would probably cost today! Such is life........and the (lower) price of technological advancement!! :)

Hope that helps!

Bill

Consumer Reports recently reviewed all type of TV's. If you can get ahold of a copy of the magazine there is a lot of good information. According to the article, they all have certain pros and cons.

If it were me and the TV was for my wife to look at Oprah and the shopping channel, no way would I spend the extra bucks for the top of the line.

CR magazine gave positive reviews of less expensive plasma TV's. Said they are often overlooked. Might be worth a look.

a friend of ours just bought a sharp aquos led and it is awesome! i beats our top of the line samsung lcd by miles! but then - we're only in the villages for a few months out of the year, and not at home to watch television that much when we are there! but we will go led when we have to replace a tv in our primary residence - for sure!

If you want the best TV make sure you buy an OLED (organic light emitting diode) rather than the older-technology (but cheaper) LED

I don't want to take out a second mortgage for a television. Just want something good.

Six months ago, I was ready to order a Samsung LCD from Amazon.com. Great prices, no tax and, at the time, free delivery. Then I checked CR and found out that Panasonic plasmas were rated higher in some categories and were much cheaper. I wound up buying the plasma on sale at Best Buy and saved several hundred $$$ and got a bigger set. I've been very happy with my purchase. I've seen the HH Gregg ads and they also seem to have good prices.

And if it was she and the TV was for you to watch a bunch of grown men chase after a ball, she wouldn’t either.

How about something good - but slightly used?

So - no use spending big money on top of the line TV.

This is so obvious, The difference between LCD & LED is the center letter. One has a C and one has an E. :1rotfl::1rotfl:

I have both. LED wins hands down. Visitors say that my LED TV is the best picture they have seen. My LED TV has spoiled me. Well worth it if you have a discriminating eye. I have walked into homes where the people are orange and the colors are unnaturally vivid and try thought it was great. If you are the latter then don't bother. This is not a subtle difference though. The LED makes movies look like digital video.

One of the best sites to get impartial reviews is CNET, thisis their take on it:
