Last month my Cars built in transmitter and 1 of my 2 portable transmitters started open my neighbors garage door. We both have the original Ro mac openers and have not changed the codes. In the 8 years we have lived here there has never been a problem, until last month. Any ideas as to what has caused this to happen?

Been there.....done that. Hubby re-programs the codes and all is good for a while.......until it happens again. Why it happens after all these years? Have no idea.

My neighbor and I had that issue. It took some trial and error but I got mine reprogrammed so it would not open him any longer. When I leave the house for a period of time I turn off the opener.

This happened to me and I had to reprogram my openers to remove the rolling code duplicate. The openers have the capacity to store and react to a number of remotes. You need to clear out all codes from the opener that opens with the wrong remote

From the internet:
"Sounds like you used your remote to open your garage WHILE he was PROGRAMMING his HOMELINK thus his opener has now memorized your remote too.

So now he needs to clear out his opener's memory and re-program all of his remotes into it. The opener manual should cover how to clear it.

Might I suggest doing it in the middle of the night when no neighbors should be operating their openers."

Hope this helps

Yup!

Same thing happened to me when I bought a new car and was programming the car's remote. Our neighbor used his door opener and every time we used ours, his door would open...

This also happened to us. Did the above, but also rolled up the antenna wire behind the opener. We now need to be in the driveway close to the door, instead of 100 feet down the street to open the door.

Not a good thing for part time residents. I would hate to be away from our house for an extended period and have our garage door opened every time a neighbor uses their remote. Another thing to worry about when away, but at least we have a great neighbor across the street that keeps an eye on things for us.

No need to worry about your garage door while you are gone or even while your home. Buy a hub that connects your doors to your phone so you will know if it’s open or closed plus you can use your phone/iPad/computer to open or close your door from anywhere in the world.
My whole house is automated this way: sprinkler system, all door locks, garage doors, lights, outlets, thermostat, and more.

MVP opener is not a rolling code. It is old analog type. The only cure is to change openers to a more secure type. Liftmaster/ Chamberlain is the best. Most of the time the problem is because someone bought a new remote and left the factory default code in it. I am a garage tech with over 25 years experience. This has always been a problem in TV.

Would you advise which product you use? Sounds like a really good idea. Thanks!

When you leave for an extended time, you should move the switch at the bottom of the inside control pad to the locked position. That way, no one can open the garage door with a remote.

When you leave for an extended period put the safety locks on the wall mounted keypad for your garage door(s).

I recently had Geek Squad out here to install MyQ controllers in my garage. They said the controllers wouldn’t work with MVP because there was no reprogram button on the opener, and so they couldn’t program the codes into the new controller. They also showed me a list of incompatible openers in the installation manual and MVP was on it. So they said I needed to buy a new opener to have smart functions. But after thinking about it, I wondered how I could program the homelink using my remote but they couldn’t program the MyQ using the remote. I suppose maybe the opener needs to be programmed to the MyQ and not the other way around like homelink. Has anyone successfully paired a MyQ controller to an MVP opener?

Thanks for the idea, unfortunately, there is no safety lock feature on our wall mounted keypad. I am going to add “turn off the circuit that powers the garage door opener motor” to the list of stuff that needs to be done before going away. Easy enough, my last task before leaving is to throw the circuit to the hot water heater and turn off the whole house water valve, so flipping one more circuit is easy peasy.

I leave a battery tender on in the garage, so instead of flipping the circuit breaker I would probably just pull out the plug in the ceiling next to the opener.

I thought of that, but with both golf carts in the garage it would be difficult to get a ladder under the opener. I could reach the outlet without a ladder, but my wife couldn’t. I like to keep the process as simple as possible for the times when my wife flys down for a couple weeks without me (someone has to stay home with the dog when one of us fly’s down for a short stay and has to pull all the dam weeds).

I had the same problem because of the storage of numbers in the opener. Called Ryan O'Cull Ryan O'Cull Garage Doors, Inc. / 352-351-1752. He came by the same day, cleared out all the old numbers, reprogrammed all my remotes. NO PROBLEMS since ! Took him a couple of minutes. Fast service, great prices. I use him for any problems I have from drive belts to springs.

It sounds like your lock feature is not functioning because that is what it is supposed to do.

Just lock your garage door opener at the wall pad when you leave for any extended time. Even if you go away for a short weekend. it's Peace of mind.

The reprogram button is small hole on wall switch. There is one inside but hard to get to.

Correct. To reprogram the remote:

Step 1 - Insert a paper clip into the hole for about 6 seconds until the red light on the overhead motor comes on and then goes off. The system is now cleared.

Step 2 - Insert a paper clip into the hole and remove it. The red light on the overhead motor will be on. Then, press the middle button on the remote and the red light will go out. Test the remote.

This should solve the problem with your neighbor's garage door.

My home was built in 2004 and had the MVP opener on the garage door. I didn’t like the noise of the chain drive and I wanted a Wifi opener.
Had a Chamberlain Wifi belt drive unit installed.
I was amazed at how much quieter it was,
and it’s much more secure as far as codes are concerned.
I’m curious since MVP openers are no
longer made, what openers are being installed
in new construction?
