On our walk this morning we noticed a neighbor that had a water bowl and a container with treats out by the side of the road.

With summer coming up this is a great idea! Summer is very hard on small dogs walking on or near pavement, if more people put out water it would be nice.

When I we got home I put a water bowl out front and a sealed container with treats and poop bags in it.

Sure was nice of them. But the fact remains that YOUR dog is YOUR responsibility. No dog owner (I used to be one) should expect others to provide for their dog. Being a good and responsible dog owner means protecting and providing your dog. Don't expect neighbors to provide food, water, toilet facilities (that means "keep off the neighbors grass, no excuses!"), etc. When you got a dog (or any pet) you and you alone became responsible for it, 100% of the time.

Kudos to you. What a rarity you are!

It's nice to read something favorable regarding dogs as opposed to poop and pee, get off my grass, and how terrible it is to see a dog in a store.

No need. I've had and loved several dogs over the years. Some of my neighbors loved my dogs, others didn't like dogs, some were distrustful of dogs or were afraid of them. Each had their own reason for their feelings. Their feelings and their reasons were their business and none of mine. I never assumed the privilege of trespassing onto their yard for any reason. Just reminding folks that not everyone loves dogs or their visits and not to be shocked by those who don't like their home being the daily doggie restroom, or like being approached by strange dogs.

I think it's a great idea. I'll put out a bowl of fresh water at the end of the driveway, starting this week! I won't be funding someone else's dog treat supply though. We have neighbors who do that already, these pups around here are spoiled (and most of them are awesome)!

I just really wish the pet owners would put little booties on their pooch's feet, or have them walk their dogs on the grass instead of the pavement. If it's 80° outside, the blacktop is around 125°. Forcing them to walk on a hot blacktop road is cruel.

I have shared my life and home with 8 dogs over the years. When I got a dog it was either a gift I had asked for, purchased, adopted, rescued or inherited. I loved them all. As to my comment "speaks volumes about what kind of dog owner"I was, Thank You! However I got my dogs, I provided them with a safe and comfortable home with good food, plenty of fresh water, healthy treats and snacks, plenty of exercise, regular medical checkups, and loads of love.
Some of my neighbor's loved my dogs, others, not so much. Each had their own reasons for their feelings. When we went out, I carried water and treats as I preferred they not eat or drink from potentially contaminated sources (communal water bowls). I never let them approach anyone unless that person asked for interaction. My dogs never were allowed access to anyone yard. Never had anyone say a negative thing about my dogs. My dogs lived happy and healthy lives. I think I did just fine.

I agree. Walk early or walk late. In the heat of the day the dog would rather be at home and cool.
As to the water bowl, every car, cart, contractor that goes by will contaminate what will very quickly become hot water.

No "BS" imo. A lot of folks who take regular walks with significant family member or friend might say " our walk " be that companion human or canine. Dog or not, they noticed someone had put out some items for walkers. A very nice gesture.

So, true, I think it is mostly a problem with coming from cooler climates. Here the sun can rapidly heat the pavement until it will burn dogs feet.

I have a couple dogs. One I have mentioned previously, is a Great Pyrenees - a giant breed. He was our live stock guard dog, back when we lived in the country. He is not socialized, socializing a guard dog kind of defeats the purpose. We don't walk him on the streets because too many of our neighbors walk their tiny dogs, and if he got "excited" it might scare the little dogs owners - our neighbors.

But, you are welcome to come over and meet him anytime you want - just walk in to our backyard through the gate unannounced. I saw him chase a pack of coyotes away from our goats once, I expect he would enjoy meeting you.

But, thank you very much for calling me a lair, I hope you have a nice day.

It was very kind of the person who thought about pets by putting a water bowl out for them. I think I would be very careful to let your dog drink from a water bowl on the street. There is so much spraying that goes on the lawns with so many chemicals to kill weeds, fertilizer, kill red ants and so forth. Those chemicals can get in the water from the wind. Plus you don’t know how often the water bowls are washed and water changed. After saying that, boy what a kind soul to think of the animals.

As a dog owner and dog lover this is a lovely idea. I hate to rain on the parade but there is a respiratory virus that is prevalent in southern Florida so I would avoid sharing water with dogs I don’t know. It is a lovely idea though.

I think you are talking about canine parvovirus. It is prevalent in most "warm" places. Most vets will recommend the vaccine if it is prevalent in their area. And if a dog has it and is walked in your neighborhood, or dog park, it can spread easily from plants and grass and other surfaces where they do their business. Or if infected dogs "say hello" to a non-infected dog. It is a VERY contagious disease.

The water bowl IS another vector. If you put one out you should clean it daily for sure. If you are concerned for your dog, you should be very careful where you walk it. And, be very careful about dog sitters, or boarding. A long time ago there was a major outbreak in CA. When we visited a breeder we were required to spray our legs and wash our shoes in disinfectant prior to entering her property, since people going from breeder to breeder was found to be a transmission vector.

If your dog is not vaccinated, you should talk to your vet and I expect they will suggest you get it, but your vet would know if it is currently active in this area.

As a dog owner and dog lover this is a lovely idea. I hate to rain on the parade but there is a respiratory virus that is prevalent in southern Florida so I would avoid sharing water with dogs I don’t know. It is a lovely idea though.

Shouldn't affect me, as I never drink out any dog bowls.

No, I’m not talking about canine parvo virus and most dogs are vaccinated against that anyway. The respiratory virus I am referring to is called ā€œcanine infectious respiratory disease complexā€. In a 3/26/2022 article it states ā€œMiami-Dade Animal Servicesis urging dog owners to keep a watch on their pets out in public as a new highly contagious disease spreads across south Florida…CRIDCā€ is like a canine flu or cold. It’s multiple viruses that affect the respiratory tract and causing respiratory symptoms. Sneezing, coughing and hacking,….

The article goes on to say it is spreading quickly and you should avoid allowing nose to nose contact with other dogs.

Incidentally, parvo virus is a deadly virus and it is one of the most important vaccinations for your dog no matter where you live.

Thank you, I will look into that at once!

Okay, That, CIRDC, is commonly called Kennel Cough, which is how I knew it. It is frequently spread in kenneling facilities where people park their dogs for a day or two while they are out of town. Hence the name.

Everything I saw says the outbreak currently is in South Florida.

CIRDC is normally not fatal, and when it is it is normally only in older dogs, puppies, or dogs with other issues which weaken them. For healthy dogs in their prime, it is normally not a problem.

CIRDC occurs frequently and randomly, and its symptoms are coughing and hacking for no apparent reason. If your dog does that you certainly should take it to your vet asap.

Unfortunately, CIRDC will normally break out in an area without anyone being aware. And if it does then just walking your dog where infected dogs are walked can result in infection. Close contact with walked dogs, or contact with plants where an infected dog coughed can spread the disease.

So, providing a bowl of water can increase the chances of dogs spreading the disease via drinking contaminated water. It CAN happen. But, even if it happened the result is normally mild. If someone has an older dog, a puppy, or a sick dog, they should avoid contact with other dogs anyway. If someone has concerns their dog might become infected, they should ensure the dog does not sniff plants, other dogs, or eat or drink anything on the ground, in which case I would say don't walk your dog in public until the outbreak subsides.

Thank you again for bringing this to my attention.

I will contact my vet and verify we are not currently having an outbreak of CIRDC. Other than that, I think it is mild enough that individual dog owners and their vets should decide if they want to walk their dogs in public.

Nice offer, but owners responsible. Besides knowing the amount of dog haters around here I wouldn’t trust what’s in the water or treats.:duck:

I wouldn’t let my dog have water or treats from a stranger, just like I wouldn’t let my kids take candy or anything they could consume from a stranger. Even ā€œTrick or Treatingā€ is done in a safe space anymore.

It sad when someone has to live their life with so much fear of their own neighbors.

True.

But it's odd how thought processes are influenced by where one comes from. Had this happened back where I used to live, one of the reactions would have been "dog hater! poisoned water/treats!" It is unfortunate that in the land of "Minnesota nice" such things do, and have happened. Here, it is just people being nice.

Yet another positive of living here.

Oh my...there was absolutely no indication from the author that they expected anything. They were just saying what a nice gesture it was. I think the heat is getting to more than the dogs.
And btw, what a wonderful gesture made by those that put the items out. I think more people are getting dogs, they are here to stay. Yes, they need to be walked and they poop and as long as it's picked up....well it just blows my mind how cruel and negative people can be,especially when they say..." I used to be a dog owner" it's so sad and ridiculous that it's almost funny.

I truly understand your point here....but that has nothing to do with the positive original post. Credit should be given where it's due

No, I read it all and still feel the same. As far as the water contamination goes...if the water is in a deep enough bowl, I doubt any pesticides will get into it. If your animal is vaxed, no disease worries....let's face it, if you are walking and stop to talk to someone your dog will drink from a puddle.
Again, nice gesture done, I agree with authur and all of these other detour post about grammar or spell check are from insignificant people who like to be heard and probably aren't who the even say they are...so, yeah, all that chitter chatter means nothing. The base point was extremely valid and a kind gesture...kudos to that treat supplier. If you don't agree, easy...just pull your panting dog away, or at the very least, carry some of your own doggy water.
Let's all enjoy this heat..

I agree, and have stated it is a nice gesture. But a responsible dog owner would have fresh water, food ( if necessary) and poop bags with them already, in the manner of a parent of a baby has a diaper bag with food and liquid and the essentals needed when they go out.

They (who ever they are) say," it's the thought that counts". Truely, a nice and thoughtful gesture on OP's part. My caution is that if the water isn't kept constantly fresh it can be less than desirable for the fourlegged one you love. Left at the end of the driveway in the sun, no telling who or what has been using it ( birdbath, rats, squirrels,??). Always have fresh water for your dog.
🐶 They rely on you!

I agree with you. I change the water in the morning and mid-afternoon. I am concerned as the summer moves in about the water getting hot, and I am trying to figure out how to avoid that.

I do disagree that birds, squirrels etc are a problem. Dogs drink from puddles, they sniff and leak on plants, and on and on. If you ever take you dog out into the world, you are exposing it to nature. The only way to avoid that is to put your dog in a perambulator and put a plastic bubble around it.

Whenever I’m out and about and I see a dog looking like he needs some water I go and fetch it for him. At Target I saw a young woman in a wheel chair with her service dog. She was waiting to talk to a guy at Starbucks. The black lab looked hot so I offered to get him some water in a cup. She smiled and said yes. That dog was thirsty and I was happy to clean up the water he splashed on the floor.
