View Full Version : How Do I Move a Large, Heavy Old Television Set?

I have a large, heavy color television set in my living room that I need to get rid of. According to the Owner's Manual, it weighs 185 pounds. Although it still works great, I have bought a new Smart TV that I want to hook up, but first I need to get rid of the old TV.
Any advice on how to get rid of it without killing myself or ruining my back? If I were younger, I'd just get a friend or two and carry it out of the house, but now my friends are getting old too and don't want to mess with carrying heavy stuff.
I have a 4-wheel dolly, but it is only about 6" high and the TV is sitting on an entertainment center about 25" off the floor. I have no way of safely getting the TV off the entertainment center and onto the dolly.
Anyone have any suggestions or advice? I live south of The Villages. Thanks.

Would it make sense to donate to a charitable organization and let them move it?

Yes, I would do that. Do you have any suggestions on who to call?
Thanks for that idea. I hadn't thought of that even though it seems simple and obvious now. I hope they'll take old TV's. It works great.

At 180# plus it sounds like one of those old bigazz 27" "squarish" CRT (tube) HD units? If so it's likely no one is going to take it even for free. I had one (a Sony) years ago and when I sold it for my first Plasma TV 2 brothers gave me $50 for it (cost close to $2K), picked it up and carried it out of the house and down 10 steps like it was a paperweight. Better off taking it apart and putting it into plastic bags (other than the tube) and put it out for garbage. I just cut up an entire diswasher and put it out in 2 plastic bags (other then the 2 racks someone took) because I'd have to wait a month to have it picked up by the sanitation dept here. Good old sawzall cuts anything up. :D Not even sure "Got Junk" would take it if it wasn't at the curb ...... I guess for enough $$$$ they'd take anything. :D
Edit: Just found it online. Mine was a Sony WEGA KV-32HV600 weighed 190lbs. Is that similar to what you have?

Most don't want the old CRT TVs. I tried donating a 40" Sony CRT years ago. No one would take it...

The tube itself can carry a charge of 10,000 volts.

Most charitable organizations probably will not pick it up. Most do not like accepting old TV sets even if delivered and given to them. However, it is a worth a phone call.

purchased my Smart TV from P.C. Richard. They delivered it, set it up, took the box it came in, and also took my old tv.

Mine is a SHARP brand TV, and it is 36" diagonal measure screen. Yes, the screen is square, not rectangular like modern TV's.
I wouldn't mind taking it apart (if I have to) to get rid of it. It's just that I'm not sure that would be easy, and I'm not sure how safe it is doing that. I don't want to get shocked by some capacitor or break some tube that has mercury or other hazardous material or gas in it. It's not like taking an old lawnmower apart. :icon_wink:

If it has a HDMI port someone can use it. If it has the color coded RCA plugs, or coaxial it is unusable. Check that and dispose of properly.

I called our trash collection people (Waste Pro) and they said that if I take it to the curb, that they will pick it up and haul it away if their two men can lift it. I guess it's going to depend on how strong those two men are, and, of course, if I can figure out some way to get it to the curb.

I repaired electronics in the military,I would wind leads around a capacitor but not connecting, charge it up , holding it very carefully , toss to the "new guy" ZAP , welcome to the repair shop!

I would put add in Craigslist under “free”. If it works good somebody will want it. Old TV better than NO TV. I had old working hot tub went in 3 hours.

Classic video game collectors love anything with RCA plugs/coax.

You can always discharge whatever concerns you with a screwdriver (with rubber handle :D ). Likely the only actual tube is the CRT which you would have to take to a recycling center. The rest is all solid state stuff in multiple circuit boards. It's also fun, didn't you always want to see how it works! :D :D I've cut up a couple of LCD TV's (biggest 42"). They easily can go into 1 bag. :) I've always been good at breaking stuff. Just ask my wife!

You'd still have to lift it up onto the platform which is 17.1" off the ground from the specs.! :D

Best Buy takes old electronics including TV’s. They just announced a service where they will pick it up and dispose of it for $200. Not cheap, but easy on your back. If you buy a new TV from them and have it delivered, they will take the old one for free.
For $200, Best Buy will haul away your two biggest hunks of tech junk (https://www.yahoo.com/news/for-200-best-buy-will-haul-away-your-two-biggest-hunks-of-junk-191103369.html)

I don't think so. I would just raise the platform to the same height as my entertainment center (about 25") and then roll it alongside where the TV is sitting. Then I could just push/slide the TV off the entertainment center and onto the lift table, and then roll it out of the house. No lifting required.

Can't you just find two strong guys working in the neighborhood and pay them $40 each to carry the TV out to the curb? I know that I could.

I might be able to find a couple of strong guys to do it. The guy who cuts my grass appears very strong and in good shape, but his helper is a smaller, older guy who I don't think could do it. Maybe the strong one could find a different helper one day and earn some extra money for about 10 minutes of work.
I also know a guy who does tree trimming and similar work. He might be interested in doing the job when he's in the neighborhood. Thanks for the suggestion.

Entertainment center? Beware many of the not very old entertainment centers will not fit the new larger TVs. We bought our TV from Best Buy. The salesman had a great line which is valid-no one wishes they bought a smaller set. The set we bought, would not fit in my car. I seem to recall we paid like $35 for delivery and set up. The packing is at best marginal. Broken, damaged is not that unusual. Also, I would suggest you plug the TV, the box etc into a surge protected power strip. How many times do we get told to shut off and reboot the ???????? far easier than needing to move the furniture etc to get to the outlet. Just turn off the power strip.
If you pay the few bucks for a set up, I would guess you could get the guys to pick up your old set.

You could burn it down to Ash which would weigh considerably less.

My sectional entertainment center in the living room is 39" wide in the middle where the TV goes. That's just wide enough for a new 43" (diagonal) TV to fit. I realize that a 43" set is not "large" by today's standards, but it will be plenty wide enough for our purposes, especially considering that we have gotten used to watching the old 36" (diagonal) set for so many years.
We have another smaller one-piece entertainment center in the den and the new TV wouldn't fit in it.

Hmmm. I'll keep you in mind if you would be willing to lend it or rent it out cheaply. I've arranged for my Lawn Service guy to come and move it to the curb for me on Monday for the sum of $50. If for some reason he doesn't do it, I might be interested in borrowing or renting yours.
Another option for me would be to build/add some type of stand to my low 4-wheel dolly to raise the height to equal that of the entertainment center. I could certainly do it, but I don't know whether the cost in time and materials would be worth it.
These days, it just seems easier to pay someone cash to get the job done and be done with it rather than spend time building/crafting something that I might never need to use again and would just take up space in my already crowded garage. I think that what I really need is a 2 BR house and a 6 car garage/workshop. I've already got a 3+ car garage and it isn't big enough. :)

I'll do it for 40.00. or come get it for 20.
I use this as an out feed table on my shopsmith. Occasionally, someone in the neighborhood needs something unloaded. It's good for that.

If you'll come get it this afternoon for $20, then it's yours to keep. Let me know ASAP. Is there a way to send personal messages (PM's) on this site?
EDIT: Oops, I may have misunderstood your meaning. I sent you a PM. I thought you meant that you would come get the TV for $20, but now I understand you to mean that you would rent your table to me.
As I mentioned, my lawn guy is supposed to come and get it tomorrow afternoon, and I've agreed to pay him $50 for doing so. If you can beat that deal and get it today, it's yours. Otherwise, I'll just pay my lawn guy to move it... provided he shows up which I think he will. If he doesn't show up, I'll consider renting your table (if that's what you mean). Thanks.

To the folks who like to break things and put them into the garbage - The glass in CRTs usually have about 15-25% lead oxide which is toxic. Yes, it is part of the glass but any time you break glass, it is possible to create some fine particles which can then land on surfaces around the area where you are working (if not in your lungs). Even if you sweep it up, do you really want that going to a landfill? Please try to find a place that will recycle the glass appropriately.
