A terrible palm tree disease called "lethal bronzing" has made its way into The Villages. There is no cure for it and it will kill your palm tree very fast. There are two palm trees in front of the Saddlebrook recreation center that have this disease. This Sylvester palm in this video is not cheap to buy and install. Very sad when this happens.

If this is true, why haven't they been removed? Who determined they had the bronzing?

My community has issues with Queen Palms dying, and only Queen Palms. I wonder if this “bronzing” is the cause…..

Very possible, but the issues the Queen's are having now just might be the after effect of the freezing temps we had not too long ago.

Nope. We are in Lakeside Landings, surrounded by The Villages, but not of your kind.
This bronzing has apparently affected more than half the counties in the whole state of Florida; one would think the developer would have made sure the Villages was exempt! :a040:

And how exactly is TV supposed to control nature? I did not realize they had this ability.

The black spots on the fronds tell you it was lethal bronzing that killed this palm.

Also palms are roach and carpenter ant factories/havens I took out three queens 👎🏿👎🏿Palm trees. I’ve had many homes all over fl for about 25 years , I’ve had palm trees in all of them , one home in south Florida had 12 , my current one has 6 , I have never had a roach or carpenter ant and never saw a rat either, most people I know have had the same experience, even if I did have a problem that’s why I pay for bug service, for me it wouldn’t be Florida without palm trees

It seems to me that many palms were effected by the deep freeze. So far my palms seem fine and hopefully they will stay that way. Thanks for the info.

I just purchased from this site Tree Saver (https://store.palmtreesaver.com/default.asp) The antibiotic, plugs, and syringe to hopefully protect my palms. Once your palm gets lethal bronzing it will die. Only preventative measures will protect them.

Although we have tons of queen palms and robelleni palms in TV, our possible freeze temps are too cold for them. If your queens started dying after the freeze this year, that might be why. However, queen palms are also susceptible to lethal bronzing and it can spread from tree to tree.

It is possible to get an injection that is given to the trunk of the tree that prevents the disease. Unfortunately it has to be given either every month. Or 3 months (not sure) by your landscaper (such as Massey )

Yes, lethal bronzing can spread from tree to tree. This is why its important to sanitize all cutting tools before any trimming is done. Spraying them with a good bleach is better then nothing. Remember this before that guy in his broken down truck starts climbing up his ladder to trim your palm.

You can try and control nature by sanitizing the cutting tool before the palm is trimmed. This will prevent the transfer of any disease from any previous cutting from the job before.

Simply not true. In fact, I was given professional advice by a professor of plant pathology with the University of Florida/IFAS l, to remove dead branches on my palms. This includes removing only the brown/dead portion of the fronds.

“The good news for gardeners is that the LBD pathogen cannot survive outside of a living host. This means it cannot be spread mechanically, on pruning tools, for example.”

Far as global warming. Words have changed. It is now climate change. Throughout recorded history climate is always changing. Global warming. Actually 30-40 years ago the concern was global cooling. Climate change-we will always have something to worry about.

You will find that bleach will rust your tools. Alcohol is suggested. Power tools such as a chain saw, power hedge trimmer are difficult if not impossible to sanitize.

I remember the global cooling scheme. Didn't work so they went to global warming. That didn't work so now we are climate change. They aren't really worried. All about money and control.

This is bad news to me. I bought two of these palm trees 15 years ago because they were suppose to be resistant to diseases, hot and cold weather. They are terrible to work around until they get tall. The fronds are sharp as needles and are acid fill. Had many painful jabs and cuts until they got tall. It’s a beautiful palm tree. Hate Queens. What a messy tree.

Thousands of Palm trees have been planted through out The Villages. I can’t imagine The Villages or Florida without Palms. Hopefully scientists will find a solution for our sick palm trees. “People don’t alter their views to fit the facts, they tend to alter the facts to fit their views”. Anonymous. To each his own.

You can buy the equipment to inject your palms here Tree Saver (https://store.palmtreesaver.com/default.asp). I did it yesterday it took about 5 minutes and cost about $60 to do 30 injections. I did have my own drill and drill bit.
