View Full Version : Daily Sun Leprechauns vs Real Facts Commentary

A commentary in today's Daily Sun seems to suggest that schools teach about Leprechauns, elves and tooth fairies but are being forced to not teach about real facts such as gay marriage and real history.

I believe the author is starting with a false premise to justify her position. What she claims is teaching is more likely dealing with topics that come up from the students.

Real facts include murder, rape, executions, auto accidents, horrors of war among other things that may come up, but are not topics that should be taught to kids who are talking about tooth fairies.

A lot of topics aren't suitable for K - 3rd grade.

This is very true, and a lot of topics should be addressed differently than other topics.

That is an easy statement to agree with. It is the selection of which topics and at what age that becomes difficult to agree on.

Agree! If a question about anything sexual is asked at school, it should be answered with, " ask your mommy or daddy about that". Parents responsibility and perogotive to decide what and how much is appropriate for their child.
Kids, many of whom still believe in the likes of Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny, aren't ready for all the intrecate and bizarre twists and bends of modern sex education and the evolving gender philosophy.

Erm - Jane Fonda was married to Ted Turner. Rupert Murdock was married to Patricia Booker, Anna Torv, Wendi Deng, and then Jerry Hall.

George Soros is a hedge fund billionaire and doesn't have any outright or majority ownership in any media company.

Rupert Murdock owns Fox (among other things).

Ted Turner is the founder of CNN and has a majority stake in the Turner Broadcasting System.

And here we read exactly how ignorant [defined as uneducated, and unwilling to fact check, instead blindly and pig headedly confirming their own uninformed biases] some people's facts can be. It is hard to believe anyone thinks Fox has "gone to the other side" or that Soros has any meaningful input into anything in the news. I keep waiting for my check from him.

And when the first grade art project is to make a gift for mother's day and a child says I don't have a mother but I have two daddies, how should that be handled? Should that child be embarrassed and ostracized as a weirdo? Should the teacher make it clear that the only kind of family is one mother and one father? Or should the teacher be free to support that child by explaining that families come in lots of different varieties?

There is no such thing as not discussing gender and gay marriage in early school. Should every drawing in a textbook be a white child with white parents? Could there be one of a black mom and a white dad? or two mommies? Should all the pictures be sure to include a nice cross mounted on the wall? How about a Muslim hajib garbed mommy? Kids will 100% notice if they and their loved ones are not included in the presentation of family, and culture.

Having one Chanukah song at the Xmas pageant in December did not make the Jewish kids feels seen. It made them "othered" Here is one song for you, weirdo. And while you can remove all references to God systems from the school, you cannot remove all references to what is a family.

Can the woman teacher have a photo of her spouse on her desk and mention him in passing comments? What if her husband is another woman, can she mention that too?

Really? It. ever bothered me when I was a kid.

As to your 2nd attempt at a point, the new law does not require removing "all references to what is a family"... Nor does it require that you remove all references to god.

Can the woman teacher have a photo of her spouse on her desk and mention him in passing comments? What if her husband is another woman, can she mention that too?

Nothing in the law says she can't...

Let them watch the evening news if you choose. Be prepared to answer their questions. If you want them to see dead bodies in a war field, severed body parts, deviant behavior, I guess to a point, that is your choice. But, that would be your choice and responsibility. Don't throw it at them in school and then expect parents to deal with something that some other person or entity decided they should be exposed to.

“Sex,” I was pretty sure, meant whether you were a boy or girl, and “sin” made Tante Jans very angry, but what the two together meant I could not imagine. And so, seated next to Father in the train compartment, I suddenly asked, “Father, what is sexsin?”
He turned to look at me, as he always did when answering a question, but to my surprise he said nothing. At last he stood up, lifted his traveling case from the rack over our heads, and set it on the floor.
“Will you carry it off the train, Corrie?” he said.
I stood up and tugged at it. It was crammed with the watches and spare parts he had purchased that morning.
“It’s too heavy,” I said.
“Yes,” he said. “And it would be a pretty poor father who would ask his little girl to carry such a load. It’s the same way, Corrie, with knowledge. Some knowledge is too heavy for children. When you are older and stronger you can bear it. For now you must trust me to carry it for you.” - from The Hiding Place: The Triumphant True Story of Corrie Ten Boom

We are asking our children to carry loads that are way too heavy for them. They should not be forced, as children, to see and feel the world through the lens of adults. Innocence is worth protecting and worth fighting for. We need to do our part as teachers, parents and caregivers to carry certain things for them until they are old enough to bear the load.

True, and they weren't being discussed by teachers. This whole bill was another dog whistle.... making you think the governor has fixed a problem that didn't exist. Teachers weren't grooming children, they weren't being pedophiles....... this country would be so much better off without all the lies that keep circulating designed to rile people up. Best States to Retire
Adam McCann, Financial WriterJan 24, 2022
Retirement might be the end of your career, but it doesn’t have to be the end of financial security or life satisfaction. Retirement generally coincides with the age at which we may receive Social Security or pension benefits. However, not everyone can retire when they want to. In fact, 27% of non-retired adults haven’t saved any money for retirement, though not necessarily through any fault of their own.

But in addition to when to retire, a good question to ask is where. Finding the best states to retire can be difficult without doing lots of research. Even in the most affordable areas of the U.S., most retirees cannot rely on Social Security or pension checks alone to cover all of their living expenses. Social Security benefits increase with local inflation, but they replace only about 40% of the average worker’s earnings.

If retirement is still a big question mark for you because of finances, consider relocating to a state that lets you keep more money in your pocket without requiring a drastic lifestyle change. To determine the best states to retire, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 47 key indicators of retirement-friendliness. Our analysis examines affordability, health-related factors and overall quality of life.

I am retiring this year after 28 years of teaching primary (k-4 - most 2,3) I can assure you the measures being put in place with new law are valid based on child development not any other agenda. The links below are the reasons for the new law. It is to keep children being children and innocent until they are developmentally ready. This is what happens when there isn’t a law to protect children and let them be children believing in fairies, three wishes, Santa Clause, and the world is a good fair place. Really, can’t we keep them sweet, nice, innocent for 8 short years just until they lose their baby teeth?

Dalton parents enraged over 'masturbation' videos for 1st graders (https://nypost.com/2021/05/29/dalton-parents-enraged-over-masturbation-videos-for-1st-graders/amp/)

As to those who think little children should watch the news every night before they are old enough, I hope you have good counselors and medical doctors lined up to deal with nightmares, anxiety, and depression by the time they are nine because they see the world as one scary place with adults dying and yelling at each other. I’ve seen way too many of these children over the years too. Each year the number of these children are increasing with most talking about what they saw on tv.

I will now address your concerns which really don’t have anything to do with new law.

This situation has been going on for decades - divorce, never wed, death of parent, foster care students, students being raised by grandparents, biracial families, same mom kids but different dads, blended families, adopted children from other races and countries, and gay parents. None of this is new. Good teachers always smile and affirm the child and love for caregiver. Usually responding everyone’s family is different but what makes us the same is we all love our family (or those taking care of us if foster child). The kids all smile say yes and move on. No explanation how people feel about themselves in their body is needed. If no daddy in picture, then you can make one for mommy because she is doing both jobs or you can make it for an uncle, granddad, big brother or anyone else you want to make happy.

Sex is not appropriate even when learning about types of animals. Just like mammals give birth to live babies. Birds lay eggs. All mommy animals take care of babies. If child asks how get in tummy? You will learn about that latter when you are older just like you will learn to drive later when you are older and ready. 99% of time ok. For the 1% that still persist, then I tell them that you can always ask your mommy later.

Have you been to a Barnes and Noble book store child section lately? Every teacher I know has diverse books they read. This is an almost mandate, but again you don’t go around going oh look there is a family like Tyler’s or Naytasha that is just wrong. You drawing attention is saying others aren’t good because they weren’t called out. Families are families they all have the same hopes, dreams, and problems. You just read the book, talk about the character’s actions, theme, summary and other story element. As you read a variety of books, children learn everyone is basically same and start comparing how characters act the same because they are in same situation not because of family or color or sex.

Having one Chanukah song at the Xmas pageant in December did not make the Jewish kids feels seen. It made them "othered" Here is one song for you, weirdo. And while you can remove all references to God systems from the school, you cannot remove all references to what is a family.

Never had a year were religion is brought up. Even had boy do book report on all the gods his family believed in. Had one boy do a bible study at recess. Had children say they don’t believe in God when talking about reasons settlers cam to America. Always responded see that is what makes America great. We can all believe different things, but still be in the same classroom and be friends and play with each other at recess and eat together at lunch.

Besides this almost all the schools have traditions are around the world time and cultures around they world and in America now. We even have international night where parents come and share food , games, fashion show etc as a fun community night.

Can the woman teacher have a photo of her spouse on her desk and mention him in passing comments? What if her husband is another woman, can she mention that too?

Yes have gay teachers out their. Just can’t talk about sex life anymore than heterosexual teachers can.

Now if the school you are thinking about doesn’t do the above how about calming talking with principal and PTA and volunteers to help go into the school to help and change by example not through yelling demanding and throwing inappropriate things done children’s throats. You could even find good schools and have a committee of parents, teachers, administrators go an tour to see how to make things better at your school.

Speaking about the Daily Sun, has anyone else noticed how small it’s getting? I noticed last week that the Friday issue used to have two sections devoted to “Wheels”, but last week and again this week, there was only one section and eliminated were the articles called “Timeline”, which showed historical facts about the auto industry and also the question and answer articles by Bob Weber and Ray Magliotti. About three pages in Lifestyle and very little in Sports sections today. Just sayin’.

I also noticed that hopefully will not be a trend.

I would not want teachers teaching their views on sex to my children, no matter what they are. What is wrong with these people?

Disagree. If there is a parents day, and Johnny wants to talk about his two moms, that shouldn't be restricted, and the teacher should be prepared to simply answer any questions from other kids. Maybe something generic like "All families are different from each other, and the most important thing in a family is to respect and protect each other" .

Not to 5 year olds. All educational topics need to be age appropriate.
