View Full Version : Comcast/Xfinity sporadic internet outages

For the past week the internet has been intermittent almost every day.
Their recording acknowledges a problem in "our area" and announces a fix by date which does not happen.
Yesterday was the worst day with an estimated fix by 10:40 PM......maybe!!!!!!! Seems to be working this morning.....for now.
Fast approaching cutting the cord time as soon as a suitable alternative is found.
I know our neighborhood is affected....anybody else having current service interruptions?

I haven't noticed any problems in Hillsborough.
"cutting the cord" typically means dropping cable TV service. If you are actually interested in wireless providers of internet there have been a few mentioned in other threads. Performance seems to be highly dependent on where you live.

This is our first problem with lack or poor service in 17 years! (except for cost)
I have reviewed the other threads on cutting the cord. The lack of recording and centralized access(es) are my current constraints. As the cable bill continues to go higher eventually any inconvenience will go by the wayside.

Billethkid, we had exactly the same problem about a year ago and ended up changing the modem from a Motorola one that I owned to the latest and greatest Xfinity xFi Modem. Since the changeover to the new modem at an additional cost of $14 per month, I don't remember any blip. Our service had been uninterrupted on 5 televisions that all stream, 1 desktop, 2 iPads, 3 iPhones, and very little gaming. When the grandchildren and our kids are here even with 4 additional iPhones and iPads still the service has been flawless. We have a lower-end package that is around $50 a month plus the $14 for the Modem.
When we got the New Modem we were supposed to get three Booster Pods but the technology changed and we ended up getting one Hugh Booster. Between that maneuver and placing the old Boosters at various locations, we are now totally covered. The Camera in the garage and Lanai work flawlessly. I'm loving it. Can't believe I have anything good to say about anything to do with Xfinity. I swore them off years ago. For the moment I'm happy to have them back, I'm grateful to have them.
Hope this helps you!

Yes, about two weeks, losing internet connection once a day or so. I reboot and fixes the issue but it's a pain it has to happen at all. Went through this a year or so ago and it got corrected and now it's happening again. I actually called Xfinity to discuss renewal rate this morning. As I'd thought about streaming, I asked what the internet rate is and it's $99 plus a rental box fee. (whatever that means)...so it wasn't much more to keep my current plan with their one year contract. We'll see how it all rolls.

We just changed from Century Link (which we had constant problems with outages, usually brief but enough to reset the modem and everything.) to Xfinity. So far, 2 months, we have had no problems. If there is construction occurring between you and a central distribution box for them, that could explain it.

Use system refresh. Also turn off power to modem for one minute every few days to clear ip addresses. Tech advised this as basic maintenance

UPDATE 8:23 P.M. – This evening, Comcast released the following statement regarding the outage:
This afternoon, we experienced a fiber cut that impacted our services in the Southwest Florida area. Network and engineering teams were deployed to repair the lines and we are now starting to restore services and bring our impacted customers back on line. We sincerely apologize to our customers for this inconvenience.

Do we get a refund or a discount on our Infinity bill if the internet is down for ours?
Let's see, $100 per month for a 30 day month. 720 hours in the month makes about $0.14 per hour. Seven hours downtime would be worth about $1.
It cost me more than $1 of my time to write this reply but go ahead, ask Xfinity for a refund.

Do we get a refund or a discount on our Infinity bill if the internet is down for ours?
Hmm, ours was on and off for about 8 hours. That is about 1% of the 720 hours (30x24) of service per month. So, I guess I am not too worried about a $0.70 refund.

Supposed to get a $20 credit. The Email is supposed to show up tomorrow.
I had just posted a wonderfully positive and true statement about our experience in Florida with Xfinity being so great. Within the hour we were wiped out by this outage. I had to talk to my wifey, she really is a very nice person. I'm going to talk to her again tomorrow.
I just finished signing up for HBOMAX to watch The Batman and Alfred kick out the Xfinity plug. :1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:
I'm just thinking about the Starlink system. We'll see. I really don't care about the extra money, I do care about sitting here with only a little phone service for several hours. Not good. My son has Starlink and I want to see it and try it before I buy it.

Is the inconvenience of no tv or internet not worth anything?
I suppose it's worth whatever you are willing to pay for it. At $100/month a seven hour outage is worth about $1.
You say the inconvenience is worth more like $50 to you? Well, then $50 for seven hours is about $5,100 for a 30 day month. Are you willing to pay $5,100 in order to collect $50 for your inconvenience over seven hours?
To be fair, this is the first and longest outage I am aware of in the two years I've had Xfinity. I think I've had one similar electrical outage but it didn't even occur to me to try to collect for my inconvenience.
Nucky
04-25-2022, 09:14 PM
I asked for $50 because I told them I was in the home stretch of finishing my income taxes when the system went out. They offered $10 I again asked for $50 and they offered $20. I took it. I just hope they do send the Email Confirmation they promised. We shall see. Sounds like my offer trumps everyone else's cyphering. It's fair I think as long as they don't get away for free.

Why would you have only a little phone service? I'm on a data plan for my cellular service (it's a shared plan with hubby and a relative who doesn't live here), and we never hit the data cap. I read my book, I can watch TV, listen to music, browse the internet, order take-out, stream videos - all on my cell phone. Yes it's a small screen but it's a lot more than just a phone.

Our phones did not work within the walls of our home. Only one number worked and that was Xfinity Mobile. They transferred me to Xfinity Internet. I got the estimated time of repair. I tried calling my wife’s number from my phone and my phone from her phone. No other phone numbers would complete the call either. So my phone made one call and worked a little. If I went outside I could call anyone. The internet didn’t work anywhere inside or out. It was bad timing ⏱ because we were trying to help with arranging the viewing at a funeral home for a friend in Jersey. I still like Xfinity, hopefully this was a blip.

Nucky, If your iPhone was set up like mine, it was trying to connect with your WiFi router inside your house. With WiFi and internet not working the cell phone could not do much. I went to settings and turned WiFi off and then I was able to use search engine and link to websites including Xfinity (which is how I found out about outage). When the connection came back up, I turned WiFi back on in settings on iPhone.

If your problem has been internet outage, “cutting the cord” will not help as that only does away with the tv portion. You will still need internet access for any streaming service. If you truly want to do away with internet, your only alternative will be over the air antenna for tv, and, of course, no internet access. Maybe you should look for a different internet provider instead.

Yes, our internet stopped working about 3:45 pm yesterday. No problems on our end. Couldn’t get through on phone, there was a message on site after having to log on from somewhere else that it was down likely until 4:30 am the next morn! Crazy. It did go online by 7:30 pm or so. Most likely due to the "cities" being built in TV south of 44 and xfinity adding services now that houses are going in. Rome being built at lightening speeds. I have wondered why Spectrum isn't an option for cable and internet... what am I missing here? Wildwood has it but TV not. Seems like an xfinity monopoly (?).

Mine went out a bit after 4 pm. When I returned home at 9 it was back on. I was with friends, and they had no internet either. One said it was The Villages-wide, and the other said it was state wide or bigger. We wondered if it was due to a Denial of Services hacking attack from Russia. A large-scale outage when there isn’t a storm is unusual.

If you cut the cord, you will still need a n ISP to stream

Billethkid, we had exactly the same problem about a year ago and ended up changing the modem from a Motorola one that I owned to the latest and greatest Xfinity xFi Modem. The Xfinity modem is no better than Motorola, Arris, or any other brand. Xfinity modems are built by the same folks that sell the 3rd party modems. Depending on when you get one, it might have been built by Motorola, Arris, or any of another dozen companies.
The outage yesterday was caused by a fiber cut and impacted most of central/southern Florida. It didn't matter what modem you had, you were going to be out.
At $14/month, you can pay for a new modem within 3-4 months (6-8 if you go high end). Just make sure it's the latest DOCSIS supported by Xfinity (I think it's still at 3.0), and look at the Channel Bonding. The more channels available, the more speed supported by the modem. It's usually stated as 16x4, 32x8, etc. The first number is downstream (download) channels, and the 2nd is upstream channels. The newest modems generally support 32x8. If you're not paying for 1GB internet, you don't need the 32x8, but it doesn't hurt.

Internet was down in my home for a couple of hours. Fist time in 6 months, but I own my modem and have Xfinity internet. It's been very good till yesterday. That's when I'm happy to have a cell phone and a roof antenna for my TV.
yep, happened to us, too, ...& beyond! the wifi was out @ Hurricanes Grill in tavares, - the waitress asked if we had cash to complete transaction. my daughter called her friends in: orlando, clairmont, leesburg, all out @ the same time. i was able to use my old-style flip fone, though, to call & txt

Yesterday (Monday), Xfinity was down in all of LaCrescenta Villas in Village of Santiago for over 5 hrs. Not the first time, but unusual.
We plan to partially cutbthe cord next month.
Out Xfinity bill keeps climbing. If you look closely, we're paying $80/mo for a lowly 100 mbps internet!
Thankfully, here on the north side of TV, fiber optic service is available through Quantum Fiber (was under CenturyLink) at $50/mo for 200 mbps or $70/mo for 900 mbps. We're going to go for the 200mbps to start and see if we get bogged down.
We are going to stream Xfinity, for the simple fact no one single streaming service provides all the channels we watch.
Our combined total monthly bill will be roughly 30% less.

Cannot blame xfinity to much for yesterday but bills have gotten out of hand.
Need to consider alternatives

For the past week the internet has been intermittent almost every day.
Their recording acknowledges a problem in "our area" and announces a fix by date which does not happen.
Yesterday was the worst day with an estimated fix by 10:40 PM......maybe!!!!!!! Seems to be working this morning.....for now.
Fast approaching cutting the cord time as soon as a suitable alternative is found.
I know our neighborhood is affected....anybody else having current service interruptions?
Our internet, phone & TV were off for about 4 hours & all was well by 8PM. Happens rarely.

So it seems…
There was a system wide problem for the state of Florida. All of The Villages was out until around 7 pm last night.

I've been wondering why anybody would have a smart home system, by that I mean having the lights and thermostat and security system all Wi-Fi based. Additionally I have ezviz cameras on my home that I can access from my cell phone when I am up north, that is also Wi-Fi based. There was an Amazon product that will open your front door or garage door to allow the men to put deliveries inside, don't think that's a good idea either. I believe Comcast / Xfinity also offer cell phone access that competes with Verizon and the others. Who in there right mind would want a Wi-Fi based cell phone after us outage like this? I am rambling a bit here but it seems like a lot of these products can be extremely unreliable and dangerous.

Use system refresh. Also turn off power to modem for one minute every few days to clear ip addresses. Tech advised this as basic maintenance
How do you turn the power off on the modem without unplugging it. Is it that button on the front. I tried pulling one of the chords out yesterday to reboot. I couldn’t use my phone to look for instructions as it appears we didn’t get any with the modem. I quit trying after a neighbor said that xfinity appears to be having some issues throughout the state. Any reboot info would be greatly appreciated.

Mine went down around 3pm yesterday ...couldn't call them 'cos my landline phone was out too ...tried on my UK mobile (at great cost) to be told we are not answering due to a high volume of calls - Yeah Right !!
Jumped in my car and went to Xfinity Store on 441/Rolling Acres ...to find a mini riot ...dozens of people outside the store - the staff had locked the doors and would not speak to or let anyone in ...a cop showed up ..don't know what he was doing maybe just monitoring the situation ......lots of very angry people. !!!!

I'm a little confused by your post. You seem to argue against network-based security products yet you have your ezviz cameras. Are you saying you want to get rid of those cameras?
Internet problems happen, as do electrical problems and cell phone tower problems. I have had Xfinity for about two years now and this is the first outage that I can remember. Four (or seven or eight) hours of downtime out of at least 17,000 hours of uptime seems pretty good to me.
My home security systems continued to monitor my house even though they couldn't reach the internet. When I arrived back home I was able to check their status and history. When the xfinity problem was resolved they uploaded the information as normal. All my devices worked reliably during the outage, they just couldn't be accessed remotely.
Some people could not reach their smart thermostats. That doesn't mean their house went without air conditioning, it just meant they couldn't adjust the temperature while they were away. I couldn't adjust my temperature while I was away either; that's because I (along with many others) don't have smart thermostats. The difference between me and those with the smart thermostats is they eventually regained remote access that I still don't have.
Xfinity's mobile phone works over the Verizon network. It may have a preference for wi-fi when it is within range of an xfinity hotspot but otherwise it talks to the same network as your Verizon phone. My AT&T phone also connects to wi-fi when it is available - I simply disabled that feature yesterday.

There are probably several different modems around so it's hard to say how to do this with the one that you have. Mine does not have a power button so the only way to remove power is to unplug it. Some modems have a battery backup installed. With these you would need to unplug it AND remove the battery.
I am able to login to my modem from my home network. From that interface I can press a Reset button. Not quite the same as unplugging but its easier to use and usually gets the job done. There should be instructions online for how to access the particular modem you have.

Do we get a refund or a discount on our Infinity bill if the internet is down for ours?
Historically, I have had success getting refunds from cable companies for extended outages. Yesterday it was out for four hours and, at a $100/month, I should get $0.55 back. Refunds usually only practical for multi-day outages.

Technically speaking I will take your word because it sounds like you know what you are talking about.
Actual experience is as I stated. Since I got the xFi modem I have had no outages or buffering until yesterday which was a cut cable. So if this was Let’s Make A Deal I’ll take Door #2 Monte for the Xfinity Modem @ $14.00 a month complete with no headaches like there was with the top drawer Motorola Unit. When I sit to use the computer or to stream a television show that’s all I want. I don’t want to be on the Geek Squad. I’m happy with my setup.

Unscrew the one black cord that connects in the back. When you plug it back in it might reboot. But call them first and they’ll send you a signal which might refresh your internet. It never works for us, but that’s how you are supposed to do it. Good luck!

You are being "managed".
Xfinity "Basic " internet is $25 @ Mo "funding source required; and "paperless account management"".
That gets you 60 Meg bandwidth, and 1.2Terra Byte ceiling.
Go to their physical store, INSIST on "Basic Internet only"..and "downgrade" to Basic internet.
Have had this for over a year and is totally adequate for multiple streaming feeds.
We have 4 computers, 12 Ip cameras, 2 Tablos, 2 cellphones and multiple Tvs using the connection fulltime.
Absolutley no bandwidth problems.

I've been very happy with the quality of service from Xfinity. This is coming from someone who has been using Verizon Fios in Virginia for years, and who has in the past given Xfinity a try more than once before the Fios was installed in the neighborhood.
I didn't expect Xfinity in The Villages to be this good. In fact, it's every bit as good as the Fios service in Virginia. I roll my own network by using Google Mesh network routers and Tivo's with cable cards for set-top boxes.
