Maybe it's a good thing we have all of the dog poop threads, so the bitterness and anger can dissipate over a keyboard rather than erupt in poor marksmanship and ineffective clubbing.

The article even said he was "close" to the course, it's not like he was walking on the green. I do remember a Villager brandishing his weapon at one of the dog parks in TV.

“Some men see things as they are, and ask why. Others dream things that never were, and ask why not.” (George Bernard Shaw)
I read both TOTV and Villages News. Both are flawed in their own way: TOTV is--or attempts to be, with some failures--Pollyanna with a capital P. Villages News is the seamy side of things; more a National Enquirer clone than an actual newspaper. Both represent an extreme, with the real picture somewhere in between.
Can't blame them, though. They are just filling a niche. We long ago have shown conclusively that either-or, rather than compromise, is the way we want things to be.

Nothing to do with the dog. It was all about golf.
Levine shot 3
Merritt said he shot 4
Levine said I ain't gonna let you get away with that
Levine went home to get his 44 (wasn't there so he took the 9mm)
Lying about or criticizing someone's golf can be way more dangerous than dog poopy.

I hope you’re not naive enough to think that such an incident cannot (or could not) happen here in “Florida’s Friendliest Home Town” !!
Not long ago, a man was arrested for shooting up a woman’s front door because she wound not respond to his romantic advances. Pretty much empties his clip from a 9mm handgun. Luckily, she was not home and no one was hurt (except for his feelings!). Yes , right here in TV
Already mentioned was incident at a dog park involving a gun right here in TV !
And there are many others if you care to do the research.
Unfortunately, there are lunatics ready to snap at any given moment anywhere you live …. INCLUDING The Villages.
And yes , I am a Villages resident , first home in 2005 and we’re on our third …..

Standing on the tee of 7th hole of Longleaf about 3 houses down on the left there is house with large grill with a Duke cover on it. He threatens to have golfers arrested for trespassing if they step foot in his yard to retrieve a ball. He has a large bowls of golf ball prominitly displayed on a table just inside his screen enclosure. A very friendly gentleman I've heard. Imagine buying a house close to the tee box on a golf course and then being an ass when a ball lands in your yard.

I use my ball retriever to get a ball in a yard. If it don't reach, I leave it.

I'm assuming that this gentleman is the (very rare) exception to the rule. The people we've encountered living in homes adjacent to the golf courses seem very friendly.
Case in point: my wife and I were on Silver Lake before it closed for remodeling. Some of the holes have fairways that parallel a line of homes; one hole actually has a green that is very close to someone's yard. Anyway, my wife hit a drive that sliced into the yard of a resident, who had just gotten off a ladder where he was cleaning gutters. We asked him if we could retrieve our ball, and he had no problem with that. I politely observed that living where he did he must get a lot of errant balls, and asked him if he had to replace windows from time to time. He laughed, rapped on a window and said "Plexiglas!"

Obviously a loyal "Daily Sun" reader. TV has more than its share of live-in scum; pedophiles, domestic abusers, drug addicts & alcoholics, thieves, vandals, stalkers and more. Community Standards pits neighbor against neighbor. Golf cart drivers hate cyclists & walkers. Walkers hate cyclists and golf carts. Cyclists hate cars and golf carts. Everyone hates renters. Strip off the sunny veneer and you will find plenty of ugliness within our gated (not really gated) plastic artificial Twilight Zone/Pleasantville/Stepford community.

I have a similar story. I was playing with a friend on either Hacienda or De La Vista, I forget which, some course near that area. My friend move to TV some time ago. Definitely an old-timer. We passed one house next to the course and he mentions that the previous owner was forced to move from TV. Apparently he pulled a gun on someone who was attempting to retrieve their ball from his lawn, and threatened to shoot if they didn't. He wasn't arrested but they worked out a deal with TV/cops to vacate the area.
As far as the topic, I believe that TV is the friendliest hometown (of towns over 100k population). One gets more waves from strangers than anywhere else? Right? OK if not TV, where is the friendliest town? Again, of those over 100k.

Yep. To some the glass is eternally half-empty.
You're going to find those types of people wherever. Back in Minnesota I carried a pistol every time I stepped out of the house, and we lived in a town that only a decade or so before had been voted as one of the ten most livable cities in America! I haven't even applied for my Florida permit yet and we've been here going on two years now. No need.

It can get a bit sketchy in certain areas...

It's pretty darn friendly here. Whenever I have guests they remark on all of the smiles, waves, etc. they receive. When we had the grandkids here, our kids have always been impressed with all of the sweet attention they get. The number of grouches I've run into, not counting on these threads, I'm only counting in person, face-to-face encounters, I could count on one hand.
I had a buddy from up north who also has a place in Cape Coral visit, and took him for a cart tour. Where the cart path runs along Palmer, Laurel Valley, just east of the Laurel Manor Professional Plaza, we pulled over to look at the course and talk, and 3 people stopped to ask if we needed directions.
In fact, when I pulled over I mentioned to my guest that he could probably hold his breath longer than it would take for someone to stop and ask us that. I think I was just about right.
99.9% of the time I get the impression we are all just kind of sheepishly wondering how we landed in such a nice spot.
I spend my summers on a lake in New York and it's much the same way.
Just tonight, DW and I were on Yankee Clipper as the sun was setting. We had the last tee time. She's a rank beginner, and someone was behind us. We grabbed a bench to let them through. They were in no hurry, stopped and chatted and said they were just going to skip our hole and get out of our way.
It just couldn't have been sweeter.
