It seems odd that they would not be doing everything they can to get another movie theater open especially with Summer blockbusters coming and the very large population of the Villages of retirees and their visiting relatives and friends. It would be profitable IMHO to open them.

Maybe, but I hate movie theaters because of the noise that other people make. Why don't they allow people to bring their own headphones so they can block out the noise.

For movies like Thor, Elvis, Jurassic Park, Top Gun, Avatar, etc., you really need a big screen with Surround Sound or an upgrade of that to really experience the movie. I do have to get up when nearing the two hour mark though as my prostate is not what it used to be. There are many mask less customers in grocery stores of late. I donated blood Thursday and we did not have to wear a mask until we neared the bus where we would be donating. This was at the Polo Fields.
And we went to the movie theater to see The Lost City around late March 2022 and I only saw a few people with masks and the theater had only a few empty seats. Think 278 or so of the seats were all taken. Auditorium 1 of the Old Mill Playhouse seats 300.

Would take a lot of stars lining up in a very special way to get us into a movie theatre soon. I was a member of MoviePass years ago and saw literally 150 movies in a year back them. Some several times over. The cost was like $10 month, unlimited movies until they changed plans for new members. People say that I caused them to go out of business….

Having a modern movie theatre to call our own, within our villages, is what lends a sense of grandeur to our lifestyle choice here .
To not have it anymore is evidence of decline.

I rent movies from Redbox kiosks weekly, they even have deals where they take a $1.25 off and I often end up paying as low as 79cents. You can find kiosks at Publix, Walmart, Walgreens, Circle-K in Lady Lake as well as many other places. You can even order the movie you like online, go to kiosk, put in your credit card and movie will come out. You have to return it by 9Pm the following day. Enjoy !

We have always gone (1-3 times per week) to the AMC at the mall in Leesburg. We have talked to lots of Villagers there that have started going there. The experience is so much better, in many ways, for those of us who prefer movies on a big screen; and much less expensive if you subscribe to their A-list program. ($23.49 with tax per month for up to 3 movies per week). All recliners, advanced reserved seating, large modern screens etc. Yes, it's a bit of a drive, but well worth it; and we have the time; plus, we combine the movie outings with other errands, dining out, etc.

Ok, folks let's look at the facts before you all continue to bad-mouth the developers. There has been very limited content available to show in the theaters due to the pandemic. The production of movies was shut down for a very long time in the US. There was some production overseas. Now recall it takes time to produce movies, sometimes two years or more. If there is limited content to show, ie movies, and all such new movies can be shown in one theater, would you open up two additional movie showhouses at this time? Second, I have been to the theater at Summter 5 times in the last two months, and at none of the showings was it more than half full, would you open the other two show houses, under this fact if you owned them. Come on folks know the facts before you continue to wine....

We went to a $5 Mondays showing of The Lost City and there were really only the front two rows open. There were single seats spread out here-and-there in the upper rows.

Sorry to disagree but all through the pandemic, other than about three months in mid-2020 when the AMC in Leesburg was closed, there were new movie releases every week. The idea that movies were not being released as a reason to explain theaters in TV staying closed is inaccurate. I wonder if at least one reason that the theaters here are not all being reopened is that the developer realizes that the cost of ongoing upgrades etc to keep up with the cutting edge technology in the industry, in order to compete with the customer experience at the large theater chains, is not cost effective. Of course people's streaming movies at home (which we do, also) is another consideration that The Villages may be considering, but for many of us the large screen experience cannot be matched even on our big screen home tv's.
Also, the AMC has some showings that have open captioning (subtitles) for the hearing impaired; their website shows which showtimes offer this.
Plus, for those interested, there is a bar so you can take a cocktail, wine, or beer into the theater. Plus a full concession area. And you can reserve your exact seat online days in advance.
I think we are lucky to have this; lots of areas in FL don't have an AMC nearby; especially since with A-List the movies can each cost as little as $2.
Plus the mall has a huge entertainment complex just down the hall from the movie theater; it looks like a mini Las Vegas - neon lights, bowling, indoor go carts, sports bar/cafe, huge arcade, billiards etc.

I think you're right on that. With all the streaming that is available now perhaps they're keeping a close eye on the number of folks going to the one theatre that is open..... and IMHO that'll be the bellwether as to when and if the one in Brownwood reopens as a movie house
but I'm sure they've got a couple of alternatives that they're looking at

Many areas of the new sections are nearly as close (at least, in driving time) to the AMC at the Leesburg mall as they are to the Old Mill in Sumter Landing. And the experience at AMC is much better, at the same (or, it can be, much less) cost.

My 2 cents worth, having attended one movie at SL, yes it was affordable at $5 a ticket but it was no way to watch Spiderman's last movie. Poor picture, sound and having the guy in front of you crushing your legs. They need to invest some money to improve the screen and sound quality. The next load of money is to at least space the seats out more. I would prefer the reclining seats but I can live with the seats they have but space them out so the guy in front of me doesn't end up in my knees and how about a little space for people to get by to use the restroom....
With the new developments and the age of the people they want in Middleton, you would think this would be a must have or do.

Good post. The traditional Hollywood movie is facing enormous competition from streaming services. Which produce their own movies and have the advantage of making a whole series or even several seasons of a series. Sometimes a story needs more time to be told comprehensively than can be done in the 2 hours or less typical Hollywood movie.
..... and I find that so-called "2nd string" actors are just as good as the big buck "superstars". Take, for example, JJ Abrams in "Counterpart" - he was perfect in that role - could DiCaprio have made that series any better - I don't think so! Take Josh Brolin in Prime's "Outer Range" - he is perfectly believable in his role as are all the other actors in that series. It is the writers and directors that make a good movie or series. A superstar actor just means that it will be a big-budget movie.

Maybe, but I hate movie theaters because of the noise that other people make. Why don't they allow people to bring their own headphones so they can block out the noise.
I always wear earplugs. Especially for the early warmup advertisements.

For movies like Thor, Elvis, Jurassic Park, Top Gun, Avatar, etc., you really need a big screen with Surround Sound or an upgrade of that to really experience the movie. I do have to get up when nearing the two hour mark though as my prostate is not what it used to be. Summer Movie Calendar 2022 << Rotten Tomatoes – Movie and TV News (https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/prev/summer-movie-calendar-2022/)
I saw Avatar at a theater and that was one movie that needed the immersive feeling of a big screen and surround sound. Many other movies are fine on a small TV screen. "The Expanse" had some BIG immersive scenes - yet it was made for TV. I feel that the writer and the director MAKE a movie or series.

Maybe less and less people are supporting the wacko's in Hollywood like Baldwin, Baldwin, Smith, Cosby, Spacey, Gibson..............oh it goes on and on.
:popcorn::popcorn:
I have never been interested in a movie star's personal life because it clouds over their performance and ruins my viewing enjoyment. I know that there are many people that take the opposite view. There are many magazines devoted to scandal and every aspect of Hollywood stars' personal lives. I see all the magazines at a checkout register and I just think, "what a waste of paper".
.........Some "stars" support good causes, like recently one actor was raising money for displaced children in and out of the Ukraine. That's a good thing. But, I am not going to care if an actor gets drunk and causes a problem.

I thought movie theaters were going the way of landlines. We can be in the comfort of our homes and watch 1,000s of movies, not sure why anyone wants to go out and do the same thing.
Going out and being SEEN out reinforces the human NEED for social interplay. It probably goes way back to caveman times when group survivability was greater than individual survivability. Retired people no longer have workgroups so they need to create other groups. "Dressing up" to go out also adds to the overall idea of doing something important with ones's life (in retirement).

Strange dislike of socialists. Bear in mind that the US has integrated socialism and capitalism. The US Social Security System and even Obama Care are important examples of that blending. Some people prefer things to be perfectly black and white, but that does not really exist.

It seems odd that they would not be doing everything they can to get another movie theater open especially with Summer blockbusters coming and the very large population of the Villages of retirees and their visiting relatives and friends. It would be profitable IMHO to open them.
Probably waiting for Eastport and Wildwood non-restricted community. You would have a greater selection of movie goers

I agree with that. The Villages has a huge population of retirees who also get a lot of visits from their family members from all over the place. Movie theaters would be quite a draw especially for those tired of Disney's offerings near Orlando.

I prefer to go to the movie theater for the large screens which are so much larger than a big screen TV in your living room. Also......there is no comparison to the sound systems in movie theaters. The experience is so much more immersive in a movie theater.
I saw Spielberg's West Side Story on the big screens in movie theaters (3 times) and purchased the Blu-Ray. I haven't seen the film on my big screen TV at home yet but I'm sure I will not enjoy it nearly as much as in the theaters which are equipped for block buster films like that. There is no comparison to a home theater, IMHO.

I was in a theater when the audience broke out in thunderous applause when the film ended. I believe it was "The Producers" with Mathew Broderick and Nathan Lane. There was much laughter through out the film too so yes, agree that is is so much more fun with audience reaction.

The new Spiderman, for instance, was a $300+ million film. But it's already grossed $1.8 BILLION!
