Even though I have rented and spent weeks in The Villages over the past 15 years I have called The Villages ‘home’ since moving here from the Midwest this past summer. One thing I just can’t understand is why do so many Villagers drive so fast or come up on you and get so close to you as they follow you and act upset when they don’t think you are driving fast enough! What is the big hurry? You are retired! Slow down and smell the roses!!! I had an incident yesterday where I was driving my car in the Spanish Spring area from a country club and I had to share the road with two golf carts that were ahead of me in a residential area that didn’t have golf cart lanes along the road. Another vehicle comes flying up behind me, is waving his arms because I’m not passing these two golf carts heading toward Morse Blvd. it would have been too dangerous to pass and it was only a couple of blocks at most. I don’t get it. What’s the big hurry? Haven’t you heard the song lyrics ‘ I rush and rush until life’s no fun, all I have to do is live and die, I’m in a hurry and I don’t know why’! Slow down, there is a speed limit, try to stay somewhere close to it! I know what some of you are thinking. It’s not just the Villagers driving like this, it’s the non village residents too. Well for us residents retiring here it’s OUR community and if we Villagers slow down a bit and drive safer maybe everyone else will take our lead and just might drive a little slower and safer too. We need to set the tone. Take your time. Be safe. Avoid accidents and chill out a bit! And……. don’t even get me started on the roundabouts! Now go have a nice day and Be Well!!

Since we are complaining about drivers in TV my complaint is the opposite of your’s. Why would anyone drive a car 25 mph on a 30 mph road especially the ones with golf cart lanes beside them. Most carts go 25 mph. We had guests in town last month and rented a four seater cart from TV. That thing went exactly 15 mph not one bit faster. Had to pull off on the grass on the rec trail a few times to let a line of carts pass. Embarrassing.

Let me guess. You are perfectly fine with slow traffic in the left lane, as long as they are going the speed limit.
I would agree speed has seemed to step it up around here

Don't forget, you will see a lot of "outsiders" speeding on their way to work, going to and from lunch, etc. Rt441 slows them down, with the construction and lights.

Driving 5 mph below the speed limit is not against the law.
Well... that's not exactly true...
Going slower than traffic is often dangerous. Dangerous driving is illegal.
It is illegal to putz in the left lane, and thus impede faster traffic. No matter what their speed is.
Going slower than other traffic causes everybody else to have to deal with your vehicle as a hazard. If they are involved in an accident as a result of your irresponsible actions, which were the root cause for the accident, you can be held responsible. Lots of lawyers out there appreciate your actions.
How about driving properly? If you are not comfortable, drive at another time when there is less traffic.
Things going too fast for you? Maybe you should not be driving.
When you think everybody else is wrong, typically it's you who is wrong. Step back, rethink your stance, and consider making changes.

First of all, not all of us are retired yet. Second, if you are driving the speed limit, it's their problem. Thirdly, if you are in a two lane traffic and you are in the left lane holding up traffic, consider pulling into the right lane to let them pass. Fourthly, use your judgment about passing carts in residential areas, if its not safe don't do it, if there is room and its safe you are better off going around them. Finally, remember in most cases you will never see these people again. Not worth getting upset about, let them go around and enjoy the rest of your day.

My cart can't go more than 20 mph, and most carts are the same as mine.... 20 mph is the speed limit here in the Villages anyway. Going 25 isn't going to get you there much that much sooner , so slow down and enjoy life.

Why can't drivers use the right lane? Are they only qualified to drive in the left lane? Why do they drive side by side and never pass someone? Keep right except to pass!

Being retired doesn't mean I have nothing to do and all the time in the world. When I'm in my Car or my Cart I've got someplace to go and usually a time that I have to be there. I do Always leave early if I can. I don't mind if You want to go slow, but thought should be given to whether you're impeding others. If you have that much time on your hands and want to go slow and 'smell the roses' consider walking and getting some exercise as well.

You totally missed my message….I’m
Not talking about a person driving ‘slow’ on a 35 mph street like Morse Blvd or Buena Vista and you are only going 25. I’m talking about being on a street with one way lane traffic each way following two golf carts and they’re going 20-22 mph and it’s dangerous to pass and a guy gets right up on your tail and is waving and acting like a jerk. Also if I’m on Morse or Buena Vista and I’m going 5 miles or so OVER the 35 mph speed limit I’ve had people coming flying up on my tail and get all worked up I’m not going faster. I’m just saying, slow down, drive ‘around the speed’ limit and don’t be a jerk! #BeWell

Drivers must not continue to drive a vehicle in the far left lane when being overtaken by a faster moving vehicle, unless the driver is preparing for a left-hand turn at an intersection. Drivers failing to move from the far left lane will receive a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation.

You are ‘moving the goal posts’ in what my message was. I agree totally with all the posters that said ‘get out of the left lane on a four lane road if you are driving slow’ ….I get that! I’m not talking about someone driving 25-30 mph down 466 or 466A in the left lane. Totally different situation than the one I was posting about. Carry on.

Get used to that here. People read and understand part of what you write, make a conclusion, comment to disagree, and never fully consider what you said.
Car with one lane going your direction, there is no left lane, no right lane, only one lane.
You are behind golf carts and seconds from their turn off onto a path
Cars get behind you with irate drivers as you are impeding them.
Perhaps they cannot see that you are trailing carts and think you are alone on the road. That is the most gracious possibility.

I wasn't talking about slow pokes. If somebody wants to go faster than you in the left lane you're supposed to move over.

I don't like to be tailgated either....however, at times I also do get frustrated with the 'speed police'...that can't do 1 mile over 30
granted there are some plain jerky drivers out there....however, here's another perspective...
we never know if that driver behind us that is so anxious to pass us is trying to get someone to the emergency room (and should have called 911, but they didn't)
or that they have an 'urgent call' and are trying to get home before they soil themselves
with all the road rage that is going on, I tend to allow them pass me

The OP was in a neighborhood, when I am in a neighbor in my cart I generally drive down the middle of the road. The roads are not that wide and most everyone only goes about 20 mph.
Once out of the neighborhood and onto a main road or a double lane road, I agree with many here. It is a drivers responsibility to keep traffic moving and not cause a hazard. Keep to the right. If you are not in the right lane when ever there is more then 1 lane the drivers responsibility it to either keep up with the car in front of them or move to the right lane, there is no other choice.

Those that follow golf carts because they are afraid to pass them should get driver education, I know cart drivers are always weaving out of their lanes , a driver job in carts are to be aware of what’s happening behind them , also toot of your car horn when passing carts alerts them and drive on.

why or why can't they set on Buena Vista or Morse to slow down the speeder's. Mr. Arnold(SC admin) stated that there has been no increase in the number of vehicles on these roads, yah, what about the speed of these vehicles Mr. Arnold. Wake up people, the police need to do there jobs...protect us, not the FAMILY!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd hold on that thought - around here this would apply.
Florida Vehicle Code Sec. 316.183(5) states that “No person shall drive a motor vehicle at such a slow speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law.“. This means drivers are not permitted to block or otherwise impede the normal flow of traffic.

I have noticed besides the overly energized Village People - there seems to be a lot of non - Villagers using some of the roads in the Villages as a shortcut to other Hgwys.
My thought is if ALL the Village People were to drive at the speed limit it might discourage the shortcut people and they would stop cutting thru the Villages ???

This sounds to me like someone that doesn't understand the zipper merge either and gets in the line with all the cars instead of staying in both lanes until the merge. Probably the guy that moves his car half way in both lanes.

We do not own a golf cart. When I drive, I rarely exceed the speed limit of 35 mph on Morse and Buena Vista.
I always drive in the right lane, except when I need to go left at the next roundabout. Then I move into the left lane after I get past the preceding roundabout.
Of course, there are faster drivers that whiz past me, and that does not bother me at all. I enjoy driving around TV.
So I guess this thread does not concern me at all, so now I'm not sure why I am even typing this post. This is not the first time I have been puzzled why I have done something. It's fun being old with no responsibilities.

It’s not just cars, people drive 15 mph in their golf carts and are oblivious to the string of golf carts behind them. These same people will give it more gas when you try to go around them which makes it tougher to pass. Same thing in cars, I’ve been behind cars going 10 mph slower than the speed limit and when a passing lane appears, they magically go 20mph faster so you can’t pass.
Slow drivers are more dangerous than faster drivers imo. There is a reason we don’t have autobahn speeds here in the states. Over there, if you are in the left lane and you cause a car to brake or slow down, you are ticketed, even if you are going 180mph or faster. I wish they would ticket slow drivers here and especially drivers that don’t know how to navigate the roundabouts.

I agree. Also, the left lane is NOT a travel lane. The left lane is for passing and exiting. It is FL law, I have posted the statue previously. All people need to be polite and follow the rules of the road and not everyone who lives here is retired.

My cart can't go more than 20 mph, and most carts are the same as mine.... 20 mph is the speed limit here in the Villages anyway. Going 25 isn't going to get you there much that much sooner , so slow down and enjoy life.
If I'm 6 feet behind your cart and especially if you can see there is more than one cart behind you, swallow your pride, slow down pull over and let them pass. Getting mad at a person for passing you is childish.

Are you that bad a driver that you can't safely pass a cart driving in the cart lane? There is always plenty of room to go around them.
OMG….just for clarification, in my original post I was NOT talking about driving on a road with a golf cart path alongside the road. I am talking about an incident driving in SS on a road that does NOT have a golf cart lane along the side of the street and you have to share the road with golf carts! It isn’t the first time that type of incident happened either. I’ve passed hundreds and hundreds of golf carts who were driving in the golf cart lane along the side of the road in different villages. #BeWell

Speed is life.
...Or death. And golf carts are certainly not immune. Deaths due to golf cart accidents , as well as serious injuries, are certainly not unknown in TV.
A big part of the problem is that there are Villagers, in cars and in golf carts, who have no business being behind the wheel in either one. Aging is a process of loss; things like depth perception, peripheral vision, reaction time, and judgment, as well as for some the losses that come with dementia means that there are some dangerous people out there. I've overheard conversations where a person claims that he "is as good a driver as he ever was" even though he is pushing 80+ years. It is why airline pilots are mandatorily retired at age 60. Sure, there are some who could keep flying to 65 or even 70 but those people are rare, and losses in ability are inevitable.
It is why I've always felt that mandatory retesting for a driver's license (written AND road tests) should be implemented every "x" number of years after a person reaches age 65; say every three years from 65 to 75, and every two years thereafter. It would go a long way toward making the roads and MMPs around the villages a lot safer.

I drive sorta on the slower side. I also try to be as considerate as possible to other drivers.
That being said, you stand a better chance of winning the Lottery and getting Hit By Lightning while collecting your winnings. People are going to drive the way they always have or worse. We are in a Retirement Community. Older People = Hard To Change Lifelong Habits!
It's okay to get worked up when someone jam's up your day, don't think they are going to change one bit.

Love the car on Wednesday, that floored it to pass a stopped lawn trailer turning right, waiting for a pedestrian to cross the street. The car crossed the double yellow line to pass just as a oncoming car came around the corner. The car quickly jam on the brakes, pull back in the lane and then literally ran over top of the trailer of the lawn guy.
Thank God his truck had its wheels straight if not he would’ve been pushed into the pedestrian. Now that’s what I call somebody in a hurry and could care less about anybody else.
Oh by the way he lived in Hemingway, pretty angry that they had to tow his car. I was sad that the lawn guy lost some his equipment and was getting yelled at by the guy that rear ended him.
It’s not entitlement that’s just stupid

The posted speed, is the LIMIT, not the required speed. Even that is subject to the road conditions, weather and traffic amongst other variable factors. If someone wishes to exercise caution, respect it and have some patience. In 40+ years of law enforcement , never had occasion to cite some one for 5 under the LIMIT. Minimum speed on a limited access highway is another matter. Not relevant here.

First of all, thank you for your service :bigbow: I agree wholeheartedly with you within TV on residential roads and the boulevards. I notice you avoided referring to limited access highways. As I'm sure you know after 40 years in law enforcement, the #1 proximate cause of accidents on those highways is changing lanes. And the number one cause of excessive lane changing is someone not keeping up with the flow of traffic---especially those that park in the far left hand lane at 55. Sometimes it seems like there's a magnet in the left lane that attracts those drivers. I'd like to know what you think, as a LEO, of a post from about 4 years ago. The person stated that they always drive 30 in the furthest left lane of 466 in the 45 zone because THEY believe that is fast enough. And while they were probably never IN an accident, I wonder how many they CAUSED.

Invariably the major cause of limited access highway incidents is speed, excess out scores slow. Left lane campers are a real problem and it being a violation is usually posted on the roadside.
Number one advice is be aware and use your mirrors frequently. The roads are increasingly populated with speed racers slaloming through the traffic lanes. Remember for example, 5 miles an hour faster for a 3 hour highway trip will only result in an average difference of 15 miles, or maybe 10 minutes.
Bottom line just slow down, be aware of traffic, car or cart and everyone goes home.

I hate to disagree with a LEO of your extensive experience, however, the following excerpts are from 4 articles on the subject:
***Most traffic deaths are from driving too slow. About 40,100 Americans lose their lives to traffic accidents every year.
***According to a report published by the Daily Star, the number of people who are killed or seriously injured in road accidents has been steadily increasing since 2019, due to slow drivers.
***Driving slower than the traffic that surrounds you is more likely to cause an accident than if you were speeding. Driving 5 miles per hour slower than the traffic around you is actually more likely to cause an accident than if you were driving 5 miles per hour faster than the drivers around you.
***Slow drivers in all lanes can cause other drivers to weave in and out of traffic around you, which increases the chance of an accident.
It’s been proven statistically (e.g., the “Crash Risk Curve”) that traffic accidents are caused much more often by drivers who are driving below the speed limit than those who are driving too fast. In fact, driving even 10 MPH slower that the surrounding traffic greatly increases your chance of being in an accident.
Just google "what causes more highway accidents, speed or slow"
And yes, there are some articles that state excess speed is the major cause, but slow seems to outnumber them 4:1. I'm sure you've observed the zoo on an interstate when somebody is driving slow in the left lane. And I just think it's that much worse when someone does it intentionally because they want to impose their idea of an appropriate speed on everyone else.
Paul1934

There is a difference between slow and slower.
Yes, the moving roadblock in the left lane is a clear hazard, however, it is often made more dangerous by the wannabe racers closing on them at 20 over the limit and running up on their bumpers. Similarly those who close on a slower car doing the speed limit in the middle lane and wait all of 2 seconds before passing on the right are just as if not more dangerous.
Statistics are great for overall planning, etc. Seeing the ‘show’ first hand is more informative.
To get back to the issue at hand here, it is imperative that we all recognize that we are in a community with persons of all ages, levels of skill, impairments and goals. As such, discretion is the better part of valor when operating our vehicles. Drive aware and arrive alive.

But on highways only, I prefer the guy going 10 over the limit---he will come from behind me, pass and be gone---I won't have to deal with him. On the other hand, I will eventually come up on the guy going 10 under, and not only will I have to deal with him, but everyone else who is trying to pass him---maybe an illusion, but just seems more dangerous. Agreed.
Another thing that should be mentioned is the danger of being in someone's blind spot. As a former avid motorcyclist this is something I learned early on and avoided blind spots like the plague. However you see it a lot on freeways, someone parked on the left rear fender of a vehicle, both going at the same speed. Such vehicles can be hard to see if you just give a casual glance before deciding to pull into the left lane to pass a guy ahead of you, and the consequences can be disastrous.
Paul1934

Blind spot add on mirror is a necessity on today’s highways. Have fitted them to all my cars/truck. It is an extension of the admonition to check your mirrors frequently, so as not to be surprised by the speed racers. Related to comment is if you are going to pass, car or truck(esp. a truck) do it, don’t dog it. Longer you take, the longer a dangerous situation exists. Use signals and don’t cut off the passed car when you return to your lane.

If I'm on the highway in the left lane and my left turn is coming up in a mile I'm not moving to the right to let a faster ******* pass. I'm staying on the left to get into the turn lane when the light comes up. A semi today was on the verge of tailing me in the left, a couple car lengths away, then he decided to move to the right and stayed in that lane. I was going 60 in a 55.
I'm not really a speeder, I go 5-10 over but once in a while I'll see someone flying by faster. But the slow people that go 1-5 under I'm going around/past them. And if there's a light coming up I don't like to be far back in line when it turns green and have it change red. So no real hurry, but don't like to wait either. My theory has always been "nobody on the road will restrict my movement." I avoid as much traffic as I can.

#BeWell

There does seem to be carts that go significantly faster than 20 mph. Our cart a top speed does almost exactly 20 mph and there've been more than few times when carts come up behind us when we're going at our top speed, zip on by at the first available opportunity (or even when there isn't an available opportunity) and disappear into the distance. Maybe not a lot, but enough to make the MMPs with the heaviest traffic more dangerous than they need to be.
Limiting a golf cart to 20 mph isn't a Villages rule, its Florida law. But, like far too many Florida laws, the law here in TV seems more inclined to wink at it than enforce it.

My cart only goes 20 as well and I've experienced the same thing. However, 2 points:
a) If someone safely, repeat safely passes you on an MMP, even if they are going 23, how does that make it more dangerous?
b) Why does anyone care if they get passed by a faster vehicle. It seems to be an almost universal rule---those that drive the slowest hate to get passed---they just want to lead a parade. How often, let's say on SR44, 55 mph zone, do you encounter someone going 40 in the left lane. When you go to pass them they're up to 70 or more. If you drop back behind them, they're right back to 40. I'd love one of those bozos to explain that action to me.

I-95 through SC is awful. Where I live in central NY I have a choice between I-95 around DC, or I-81 via Roanoke and eventually 77 to Charlotte. Both routes eventually get to 95 in SC. The I-81 route used to be great, but now with all of the trucks it's terrible. One truck will pass another truck up a hill going 1/2mph faster than the truck it's overtaking. I have measured as much as 10 miles of roadway for one truck to pass another, both going less than the speed limit. Then you have a 10 mile train of pi$$ed off impatient drivers trying to get around the trucks before another attempt. It's constant white-knuckle driving.
Other than DC, I prefer I-95 because although you have all the trucks, it's not as hilly and when they pass each other they don't need 10 miles to do it.

In any one particular instance, it most likely doesn't make the transgression in question "more dangerous". The danger in my opinion (as well as that of the NHTSA) lies in significantly varying speeds. Add to the fact that older people often react more slowly (or erroneously) when faced with something significantly different than what they are used to, just increases the risk. Traffic moving at more or less the same speed is far safer than traffic moving at significantly different speeds, no matter what the roadway in question might be.

What is the difference between dead at 20mph and dead at 60mph?
you still have the option of an open casket?

No. Is it good? Are you on Cayuga?
It was very good, but apparently closed for good---another COVID victim. They were only open 6 month/year and had a sister restaurant for the other 6 months in Florida, but I have no idea of where or what it's named. They had the largest king crab legs I've ever seen and their prime rib was cooked over an open hearth, the "Truman Cut" was the center 2 ribs and weighed 7 1/2 pounds. Once saw a guy 5'5" and about 130# down the whole thing.

How do you know it was a retired Villager behind you? All the streets are public. It could have been anybody.

It's FAR from just "retired villagers" in a hurry here. Have you ever had a stop watch and actually clocked the lawn workers and gardeners people here hire ? They bring DOUBLE tandem trailers pulled by Dodge hemi trucks and never go under 40 mph, some actually do 55 ! Did you happen to see the pickup that failed to navigate the round about near Tall Trees on Buena Vista ? Crashed completely THROUGH the sold concrete WALL of a villa neighborhood and completely destroyed the backyard/courtyard of the lucky residents who were NOT killed as they slept ! And YES drivers , get very, VERY angry (as do villagers too) at anyone daring to just go the speed limit. They will continually pull out a bit, pull back in, pull out a bit and see an oncoming car or truck, and then, when they get even a slight chance, the "floor" it, really squeal the tires, and yell out some very salty language which the "offender" can't even hear.. it's just to allow them to "vent". Same with golf CARTS ! I guess people feel they have so few days left, that even a second counts ! Funny thing is, the way the villages is constructed, within one or two minutes, rather trucks, cars, golf carts, you ALL end up at an intersection stop sign anyway. All together in one long line... it's hilarious to think many risked their own lives, and the lives of others, and end up getting where they are headed at exactly the same time as those they recklessly passed. Oh, while we're at it, what about those who just brazenly, routinely, drive IN THE GOLF CART LANE with their trucks and autos ! Get out of MY way people they must think ???

So let me get this straight, I am breaking the law by driving in the left lane at the posted legal speed limit and I have to move over to allow you to break the law putting me and others at risk. People who choose what law they deem their right to break or obey have no right to tell anyone else what law they choose to break.

You are only breaking the law by driving at the posted speed limit in the left lane IF someone is behind and wants to go faster, regardless of his speed. So yes, YOU have to move over. YOU are not a LEO, YOU do not get to enforce the law. And YOU have no idea why that person wants to "break the law" by speeding---he may be a jerk, or he may be trying to get a woman in labor to the hospital---YOU don't know and that is why it is not up to YOU to make a determination. It is merely up to YOU to move over.

Hey, you got it exactly right. Straight out of the State of Florida statutes. :)

I think if you are planning to turn left within a mile, it is OK to mosey along in the left lane.
When I drive south on Morse, I have to turn left at a roundabout to get into Osceola Hills. A little while after I pass the roundabout at Moyer-Hillsborough, I pull over into the left lane and stay there until I arrive at my roundabout.

How do you recognize a non-villager by their car? I've lived here two years now and still haven't learned that secret.

Well, you may THINK that, but you would be wrong.
"According to the newly revised Florida State Statute 316.081, “a driver may not continue to operate a motor vehicle in the furthermost left-hand lane if the driver knows or reasonably should know that he or she is being overtaken in that lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed.”
However, "You are not required to move over to be passed if you are passing someone yourself.
You are not required to move over to be passed if you are about to make a left hand turn at a nearby intersection"
100,200 feet fine, I don't think anyone could possibly interpret that to mean "a mile"
So when you are "moseying along" in the left lane of Morse between Hillsborough and Osceola Hills, hope that the guy behind you isn't your landscaper whose co-worker is rushing him to Leesburg Hospital after his hand was amputated by a lawnmower, and hope even more that the sheriff doesn't see it.

Who said anything about enforcing a law, I said what makes a person breaking the speed limit law more deserving to break the law than another person choosing to break another law. If you are moving someone for a medical emergency call 911 and they will provide all the help you need, not an excuse to break the law.

Nearly 19 miles in left lane?
Seems pretty reasonable. Wouldn't want to miss your turn!

An Airbus 380 is on its way across the Atlantic. It flies consistently at 800 km/h at 30,000 feet, when suddenly a Eurofighter with a Tempo Mach 2 appears.
The pilot of the fighter jet slows down, flies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: "Airbus, boring flight isn’t it? Now have a look here!"
He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, and then swoops down almost to sea level in a breathtaking dive. He loops back next to the Airbus and asks, "Well, how was that?"
The Airbus pilot answers: "Very impressive, but watch this!"
The jet pilot watches the Airbus, but nothing happens. It continues to fly straight, at the same speed. After 15 minutes, the Airbus pilot radios, "Well, how was that?
Confused, the jet pilot asks, "What did you do?"
The AirBus pilot laughs and says, "I got up, stretched my legs, walked to the back of the aircraft to use the washroom, then got a cup of coffee and a chocolate fudge pastry.
The moral of the story is: When you’re young, speed and adrenaline seems to be great. But as you get older and wiser, you learn that comfort and peace are more important.
This is called S.O.S.: Slower, Older and Smarter.
Dedicated to all my friends who, like me, as seniors, we now realize that it’s time to slow down and enjoy the rest of the trip.

Very simple and concise answer: THE LAW. While you and I may think it's pretty stupid, the law, AS WRITTEN, defers to the speeding lawbreaker over the moseying along lawbreaker. But it probably for the reason already stated---we DON'T KNOW WHY the person wants to speed. Besides, why not just move over and let him go? Far better he's past you and gone rather than getting tangled up with you or someone else as he gets more and more frustrated trying to pass
