View Full Version : Highway truck noise

We have been coming down every six months for the last three years to work on the house as well as to have small getaway vacations.
This is the first time going to sleep in our bed that I have heard trucks driving by on the highway. I don't hear engines, but tires make the noise. And I was surprised at night for the first time that we heard as much as we did without the windows open.
So, from my single observation, the changes in the economy with shipping congestion reduced, etc, has definitely changed the volumne of traffic, as well as any potential reflection of the noise from the meggison road walls, reflecting the noise back over the road.
just an interesting observation, not that this is a game changer, but just to acknowledge that truck noise has definitely changed in the last year from the last several years.

Is this from the turnpike?
As traffic increases as they build a third lane cannot imagine noise not getting worse.
Grew up under a JFK flight path and sure got tired of that noise real quick.

Or the wind was blowing toward your house.

That would be my guess the wind direction was different, we get to hear the train along 301 in Wildwood IF the wind is blowing from Wildwood towards us, otherwise never hear it.

That’s what I was thinking. I am having a hard time buying decreased traffic volume creating increased noise?

I'm happy for you that you finally made it to your home. I know this is going to sound a little bit different but it took me a long time to get accustomed to the quiet in The Historic Section.
I really like Marsch Bend a whole lot and so does my wife. I was ready to go there many moons ago but she declined. I even said I'm going to miss you and that doesn't work anymore. :1rotfl:.

I can here traffic on 301 and I’m 3 miles from highway. Depends how how loud by wind direction. I don’t here it inside house.

Wind direction will definitely affect noise from a roadway. At our last home in Tennessee we lived about a half a mile south of an interstate highway. Only time we heard the noise from it was when the wind came out of the north and it was quite noticeable when outside.

So the lack of congestion makes the individual sound of the tires on the road more distinct and annoying rather than just a continual din? Interesting thought if I read that correctly. Not logical but interesting

Hey Sportsguy...This is interesting as we are looking around for a new house and are trying to learn the sound patterns from both the turnpike and Meggison. What street are you located? I have actually been going around and listening at different times and wind directions in both Deluna and St Johns where we are looking at houses.
The link below shows the historical wind patterns from a local weather station. It appears that the wind direction is about equal from east or west over the course of a year. I have seen sites that say the prevailing wind in central FL is from the SW but this interactive chart seems to show that the NE is more prevalent.
It's 4am and the Leesburg airport wx station is showing a 5mph wind from the NE. I am going grab some coffee and go check things out. Yes, I'll put on my hearing aids and no I don't have anything better to do right now. lol

Here in UK our daughter lives about half to three quarters of a mile from a busy road, and most of time cannot hear traffic.
When prevailing wind moves it can be quite loud, and even louder when roads are wet.

During the Civil War there were actually battles where thousands of troops didn’t show up because the wind was blowing the wrong direction, and they couldn’t hear the guns from a few miles away. They didn’t even know a battle was going on. At least that’s what they claimed.

Both DeLuna and St. John's are pretty close to the turnpike, and when conditions are right (wrong) you are going to hear traffic noise...no way around it. Often, sales people try to play this down when showing prospective buyers homes during daylight hours. We had initially looked at some homes closer to the turnpike, and I agree that the noise levels during the day were much lower. But, that likely has a lot to do with other competing noises such as air nailers, saws, compressors, etc. We got a really good piece of advice during our search process: Go visit a prospective property at night when there are no competing sounds. What a difference. At one home in Monarch Grove, the heavy truck traffic from the turnpike sounded like it was coming out of the back yard! Do your due diligence, and take a listen in various areas at different times of the day/night. You may be surprised. Also remember, at some point in the not too distant future, Meggison is going to be a fairly major thoroughfare.

?? don't know where you got this??
shipping congestion reduced means more containers flowing on the roads. . . congestion meaning stuck in the ports due lack of trailers to move containers. . .
maybe my bad for poorly worded??
wind change, maybe, since it was relatively stronger. . over the last week. . .

Very strong possibility that the deforestation of 1,000s of acres on both sides of the turnpike and surrounding areas contribute to the sound carrying. We noticed it since they took down the trees and built houses on the west side of Lake Okahumka in the last year or so.

Seriously? What I see is thousands o acres of farm/cattle land that is being developed. I have not see deforestation.

We bought in Hawkins in November and back up to the Hawkins preserve. We knew we were going to get some road noise when the conditions were right. We never hear it during the day but at night is when we could hear it. Sometimes loud but mostly a little white noise.
The interesting thing is now they built up the houses on the other side of the preserve along Meggison and the noise has been greatly reduced. The sound would move and come from the openings where no homes. Now when we hear the road noise it's coming from the Meggison-Warm Springs intersection where there's not built up yet but a lot farther away from our house.

Probably not in my lifetime, but 301 is scheduled to be widened to 4 lanes and the 301/turnpike interchange to be reworked so Deluna could be worse then.

Noise doesn’t seem to be an issue for us and we live in Citrus Grove. Of course we are about 1/2 mile north of the turnpike as the crow flies? When you say 3 years, it eliminates most of the turnpike areas I guess. You must be near 301? I feel more for the people along Morris, that road has basically become a freeway with round abouts.

Depending on the wind, I sometimes hear the turnpike from my St. Catherine house, which is one of the fartherest in that village.
A friend living near the turnpike put memory foam mattress toppers over the windows to deaden the sound.
Earplugs work great to deaden a lot of annoying sounds, especially those coming from a snoring partner.

Traffic noise really carries depending on topography and wind. You would need about 100 feet of dense forest for mitigation, not likely found hereabouts. Unfortunately, a prior poster’s recommendation applies, caveat emptor.

All these discussions of turnpike noise-I wonder where the heck you all lived before that was dead silent? Seriously. Getting out of bed at 4am to listen for noise? Are you usually outside at 4am?
Yes, I would not want to live right up against the turnpike. I live in Marsh Bend and IF the wind is in the northeast I can hear it- IF I listen for it -when out on the lanai, but its nothing like typical urban or suburban background noise. When I cross the Waterlily bridge and see the traffic on the turnpike, I don't think "ugh! noise" I think "that's commerce, and its little children going on vacation or coming to see Grandma."

I have lived in Fenney for 5 years as of today and I have never once heard an announcement from the prison unlike those that live within a couple miles of the squares or fire departments or hospitals, etc., hearing all of that noise which we don't have down here. Where do you come up with this stuff. The quarry blasts which are about every 6 weeks or so sound like a truck going over a pothole that lasts all of 2 seconds at the most and they are only during the day. It's amazing how you people continue to bash south of 44 and have most likely never spent a day of your life down here enjoying the area.
