I have discovered a colony of bats in my soffets. I contacted an exterminator and he has informed me that they are a protected species and can't be extracted during mating season, which runs from April 15th to August 15th. Has anybody else had a this problem? Suggestions?

At our place up north we built some bat houses and placed them strategically around our home. If they have a good place to live they will stay out of your house and they are great to have around because they devour the bugs.

Yes. A customer of mine who lives next to LSL had the same issue. You put up with them until they leave.

If you buy a bat house, make sure to buy a large one that's a light color, white preferably. Otherwise you'll end up killing the bats as they can't move around to avoid hot spots and will die from the heat.

Install a bat house nearby. (preferably in a shaded location) they will vacate your home .. Facebook has many groups that are Bat Enthusiasts…

Bat house installation tips
Bat houses should be mounted in an area that gets 6-8 hours of direct sunlight (facing either East or South).

To the extent possible, locate all houses 20 to 30 feet from tree branches or other obstacles and 12 to 20 feet above ground (or above the tallest vegetation beneath the bat house).

It’s true the are a protected species. We owned a cabin in Gattlinburg TN and it cost me $2500 to have some bats “Re-Located”. I sold the cabin after that!

Good luck… unless you want to take care of it yourself.

Lots of bat lovers around with great ideas. We had them at two different houses up north. They came back every year, cool animals.

I contacted Massey Services when I had a colony of bats in the attic. They are removed by building a one way "door" that allows them to leave at night and hunt but they can't get back in when they return. They move on and establish a colony in another location. This stays up for 2-3 days before Massey goes into the attic to make sure the entire colony is gone, clean up the guano, remove the "door" and seal the hole.

If you are interested in bat a house, I suggest that you put it up a few days before you evict them from your house. If you get outside your home about 30 minutes before sunrise, you might be able to see them enter before you call a pest control company. After the "door" is installed you might be able to see which one of your neighbor's homes they pick to relocate the colony.

We had very good luck discouraging a large population of bats living in our attic from returning by creating a "flexible funnel" out of screen and securing it to their exit. The bats fly out through the funnel, but when they return they are unable to navigate into the end of the funnel to get back in. We left it up for a few days, then removed it and sealed up their exit. Got rid of the bats without having to kill these very beneficial bug eaters.

As advised, you should wait until breeding season is over or you could have flightless babies that die in your attic and create a stink.

Bats are protected in Virginia so I think it’s a federal law. The bars were roosting in the eve vents off our house it was recommended to put up bat houses

Put up a solar light or shine a yard floodlight up where the bats are located. If a light is on all night they won't stay there.

Your exterminator is correct. They cannot be removed during their mating season. After that they can be mitigated by doing things to your house so that they can fly out but not back in. While living in Stuart my neighbors on both sides of me had bats in their barrel tile roof tiles. There were thousands!! But, they had to wait until it was allowed to get rid of them. They are directed out but never killed.

Bats are marvelous creatures!

They scoop up mosquitos by the bucketful. If you take a look around, we live next to or in a swamp. That is a breeding ground for mosquitos. I really think it would be best if we had a lot more bats. This natural predator of mosquitos would be a great addition to our wildlife!

It's not clear what you mean by "in my soffets (soffits?)". Is there a hole or a seam where they are crawling into the space between the eaves and soffits? if so, could it be sealed when the bats are out at night? For some reason I have had bat issues in three different locations, mostly hanging around at night eating their prey or fruit and dropping guano on the porch or whatever. The ones at our house in Central America were very large and messy. I have used electronic bat deterrents with ultrasound and strobe lights, but they didn't work and I returned them. The most effective has been lights shining on the problem area at night. I used low voltage beam lights (12v dc with a 110v ac converter) on a timer or photocell switch so the light shines all night. They don't like it and find another place to hang out. Some people claim that red lights work best but I never found this to be true. Just plain white lights work well, like some people use as decorations in their yard shining on palm trees etc. (should be at least 20 watts up to 50 watts for best results). You just have to make sure the lights illuminate the area where the bats want to be, or maybe where they are getting into the soffits. Good Luck.
Of course, with the other comments about protected species and babies and such it might be best to wait until after the protected season is over before installing the bat lights. Or just before the next bat season. Don't want to break any laws.

please leave the bats alone, -they are wonderful, smart creatures that have their place in our world. to remove them would be doing a great dis-service to your neighborhood, they eat the mosquitos that carry nasty diseases. bat boxes in the shade are the best options as stated above. good luck!

When we lived in CT we had the outside of our home painted. The painter removed the shutters and discovered bats living in all of them. This explained a lot. At night when we went out on the balcony the sky was filled with tons of bats. It looked like something you would see on one of those old scary movies. We opted not to put the shutters back and the bats moved on.

I read an article a long time ago about a lady who was getting them in her house. It's a long story but she was renting and told her landlord she had to move. He understood and had done everything he could think of to get rid of the bats. As a last ditch effort he put an owl statue in the yard. That did the trick. The bats left.

It wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion about the bats from a different exterminator and find out what they have to say.
