6 inches are better when we get the downpours like we just had.
5 inch is fine 90% of the time.
6 inch looks a little more industrial.........but you may not notice.

It’s all about volume. 6” gutters will handle more water but that does you no good if you don’t have a sufficient amount or properly sized downspouts.

The extra volume is good if they are kept clean, but bigger gutters also collect more debris.

Be sure to put a cover over them so you do not get leaves.
Your answer depends on how much rain you get in a short period of time.
Not knowing I would go with 6 inches.
For myself I skipped the gutters and have no problems.

Re: Leaders and gutters.
As I understand it the purpose is to redirect the water. The question is where to put it.
Homes are right on top of each other. Dump your run off on your neighbor?

Our downspouts are routed underground out to the street.

I debated the 5 vs 6 inch as well, and went with the 5". Had them on for over a year now, and never once have they been inadequate. Last Friday night's storm produced over 5 inches of rain in our neighborhood, and the gutters did their job perfectly. All of our downspouts run underground, and exit out in the yard via pop-ups. Works like a charm.

That's what the swales in between the houses are for.

What is the difference in cost between the 5 or 6 inch ? If it's minimal, go with the 6.

We went with 6" gutters, just to help manage the heavy down pours.
As far as where to put it, the yards are designed to keep water way from the house and graded toward the street, at least in my neighborhood.
Another reason to put them in is to avoid getting ruts in the yard where the runoff comes off of the roof. Looking at older homes with no gutters, its very apparent.

After 9 years we just has Stipes put in 6” gutters around the whole house.
Highly recommend this company.

I have 5 inch gutters and they have never overflowed, even with extremely heavy rain. One factor to consider is the number of downspouts you install. It think the 5 inch gutters make the house more attractive than the 6 inch ones.

When I had mine done I went with 6 inch. One issue is how many downspouts you have or want to have. I wanted to keep any downspouts away from our driveway. So I needed the six inch so I could move the runoff to the far side of the garage.

Serious response now! 5” rain gutters on my house had the Stipes boys do them right after home purchase. I don’t have any idea if they have ever overflowed but if they do it’s not like it’s coming in the house. 6” just looks too big on most houses IMO. I did put elbows on the front downspouts to dump them on the driveway which helps the total amount of water in the yard in a downpour

Without a doubt go with the 6 inches. Most companies only use 6 anyway and it rains a lot and 5 inch gutters may back up

There’s another thread above. DON’T DO IT!
Your lot is carefully graded and gutters are usually installed only to protect places where you walk. Gutters mean downspouts. Downspouts mean that you’ve changed well-proven water runoff designs. Do it at your own risk!

I checked my 5" gutters during a super-heavy rainstorm and they handled it without a problem. The key is having enough downspouts and making sure the openings from the gutters to the downspouts are as large as the downspout opening. A-Action was the cheapest and best.

Your wife is right. But, install 4” downspouts. The larger the downspout the more water that flows out of gutter.
