I purchased a new water heater expansion tank. It set to 25lbs at the factory. I know our water presser here is more than that. Does anyone know what the pressure is in the village of Sanibel? Thanks

Ours in Pinellas is 70 PSI, I can lend you my meter, you just screw on to the hose bib and turn on, I bought it at Lowe's for under $10 as I recall.

I think you can just use a bicycle pump to add pressure to the expansion tank as needed.

The recommended water pressure is between 50 and 60 PSI. Thermal Expansion Tanks contain an air bladder which is pressurized with air, and expands and contracts to absorb the expanded water from the water heater. needed. Check the air pressure in the Expansion Tank using a tire gauge.

Most city water pressure between 50 and 60 psi. Mine at my house is 55 psi.

Village Tinker (Dave) was kind enough to let me use his water gauge. Pressure at my house is about 70psi. When I removed the old tank I had a 3 gallon bucket on top of the water heater. The breaker was off as was the water. Using two wrenches I broke the connection and then slowly unscrewed the tank. As soon as it was free it went right into the bucket filling it with close to 2 gallons of very nasty water. In other words the expansion tank was full. It's not suppose to be full. New tank installed no leaks. Mission accomplished.

I was fortunate with my expansion tank. It was full of water but before removing it I tried pressurizing it. For me, it worked. I was able to bring it up to 65 psi and it is working.

NOTE: To add pressure I first shut off the cold water into the tank and then opened a hot water faucet. By doing this I had no back pressure on the bladder so the only reason it would gain pressure is if the bladder was still good.

I doubt I had very nasty water in the tank - that might be a sure sign that it was truly bad.
