Sumter County--received it today. Actually went down $98.00; of course, that means the value of our house did as well.

I haven't done a search on this forum to see if this has been discussed before. But I'll throw it out there. I just had an interesting telephone conversation with a representative of the N. Lake County Hospital, well actually an employee of a CPA firm who distributes the revenue from the taxes we pay to this taxing authority. The N. Lake County Hospital doesn't exist, doesn't have an office or any employees, according to the person I spoke with from the CPA's office.

Anyway, has anyone else ever questioned any of the line item "Taxing Authority" on their Lake County bill from the Lake County Tax Collector Bob McKee office?

For instance, the Ambulance MSTU, ENVIRON LAND PURCHASE, LAKE CO SCHOOL BOARD, ST. JOHNS WATER MGMT, LAKE CO WATER AUTH or N LAKE CNTY HOSP.

It was very educational. I still have a lot of studing to do on the subject, but I'd like to hear what you know.

Sandybill2.... It doesn't necessarily mean property values went down. My view is the growth of the area adds more taxible property which caues everyones amount to go down. At some point when more services are needed to cover the growth more tax money will be needed.

What county is Duvall in elevatorman? If it is Lake County, be prepared with a pencil and paper to write down phone numbers. The Lake County Tax Collector's office is exactly that; a tax "collector." They can't answer questions about any of the taxing authorities. All they do is collect taxes. Period. It was a real education for me.

The "Village of Duval" is in Sumter County. I have never had a problem when calling them.

The lady I spoke with in the Lake County Tax Collector's office was very, very courteous. She just said that she only has a list of phone numbers to give out for taxpayers to telephone the various taxing authorities if anyone has questions about the taxes.

She said all the tax collector does is collect the taxes for the taxing authorities and any questions had to be answered by the various authorities. She was nice and gave the numbers I asked for from her list.

It is just different than any other state where I've lived. I'm learning.

Received my first tax bill , noticed that if i paid by Dec 2nd i get a 4% discount.Seems like the thing to do,since it's a savings of hundreds of dollars, and where can i get a 4% guaranteed return on anything in our current economy?Next decision will be about paying the bond off, since it's not tax deductible and is basically an all interest payment, at an interest rate that is absurd...................decisions, decisions????

You must not have the homestead exemptions . . . plus does that $2,500 include your bond because that really is not a tax. I live in Marion county and with my homestead exemption I pay just under $2,000 for a three bedroom court yard villa that has been expanded.

Looking at our tax bill online in the amount of approx $4,000.00 ... (for our modest dwelling) ...
$547 of the total is maintenance (collected by the Tax Department on behalf of The Villages).

Is maintenance collected just in Sumter County or for Marion and Lake as well?

The only reason I can think of for not paying off the bond is if you might be selling in the next few years. You could ask for a lower price for the home and the buyers would assume the bond debt. For them, the bottom line would be the same, but some people see it as cheaper to assume the bond. As I see it, the actual price of any home is the selling price plus the bond balance. I say pay off the bond if you can.

That's the plan, after Sharon gets done with all her decorating, i hope she will be happy with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2400 sq.ft. on a cul-de-sac with terrific neighbors . If your not planning on selling, sure makes sense to pay off the bond and remove that debt from your tax bill.Plus, it frees up more cash for the happy hours!!!!!
