Not a single on-line weather report indicated any problem for last night. There was zero reason to be concerned. "Better safe than sorry" most certainly does not apply in this case!

It is not clear what information was used to make the call. At least one 12Z model run had convection over us during the time window. There was some convection earlier in the afternoon. Lightning is the issue. It was a conservative but prudent call.

We will never know why but wonder why entertainment was cancelled so early. I am sure the folks that pay for the entertainment (merchants at the square) lost business due to this as well and cannot be very happy.

On that note, I was surprised to see the lack of a lightning warning system in a place with some many golf courses.

At 6:00 there was a huge storm over Ocala and parts of Bellview. They can't pinpoint the exact spot where a storm will hit so I don't blame them for canceling, better safe than sorry and you could always go to one of the bars to listen to music on those off days.

We had a "Beware of dog" notice on our farm gate, and were advised to remove it, as it was insinuating that we knew our dog was dangerous, and if he bit someone, we wouldn't have a leg to stand on in an injury claim, should he ever do so.
Don't have a dog any more, but have put back the sign!

Our sad reality. The US has more attorneys per capita than any other country. We also have more law suits. Cause and effect? Also, sad reality. People who have nothing do not get sued.
Told to remove the sign? Should there be an issue and you get sued. Your cost to defend it will be $300 an hour. ETHICS, RIGHT WRONG simply do not matter.

A lot of people (everyone should) have lightning warnings on their phones. But no one carries their phones in the pool. They should have lightning warning systems at the pools-particularly sports pools which have large numbers of people in the pool.

I can't wait for the 1st Whiner's Club meeting. IF the OP is fairly new here he/she wouldn't know that our weather is governed by the sea breezes from both sides of the peninsula. Also we're the "lightening capital". I think I've heard "IF" you hear thunder it can be as far away as 10 miles (maybe it's more). With it is lightening. The entertainment has electrical components to it. I heard lightening last night. It sounded like it was to the west. The other day---the same thing but then the sounds of it moved and soon was to the east. I don't know about the technology that was spoken of here. I think the "weatherman" here probably has MORE training then the armchair one's. I'd vote on the side of safety (which is employing wisdom), We have 365 days in our year so an evening here and there of "no entertainment" isn't going to hurt anyone.

Weather is an act of nature, and can turn on a dime. Florida is the lightening capital of the country, I'd rather be safe than sorry. So a few nights out of the year they have to cancel. What's the big deal?

Not according to NASA. Their data shows there are at least two other places in the world that have more.
According to another article, within the US Florida and Kansas are neck and neck. According to the same article, within Florida it is Orange County that has the most strikes.
But what does any of that have to do with the accuracy of an app that probably gets its information from a national weather data source?

All around us? Lightning is always all around us, the question is whether it was anywhere near close enough to be a concern.
If thunderstorms can pop up out of nowhere and are frequent this time of year then are you suggesting the squares, pools, and golf courses be shut down from June through September just to be prudent and out of an abundance of caution?
And I think lightning is dangerous any time of the year though yes, more frequent in the hot summer months.

I’ve been in Florida a very long time , I’ve rarely check weather here because the forecast never changes much , hmmm let’s see , partly cloudy or sunny, and a chance of rain or not, depending on what side of the street you live on. My first alert of a hurricane showing some tiny speck that hasn’t.even reached the islands yet , is when I walk into Publix and find all the water , chips and peanut butter is gone

Try Again:
If an act’s scheduled performance is canceled 14 days or more prior to the engagement, The Villages Entertainment Department doesn’t have to pay a cancellation fee. If the job is canceled any time less than 14 days, right up until before the performer sets up his or her equipment, the entertainment office has to pay 50 percent of the fee. And if any portion of a performance takes place, the full fee will be paid.

Sorry their agenda is full already
That's for sure...LOL...little story here, I clearly remember when I was much much younger, in southeast Florida. We lived west of 95, but had family who owned a condo at Lauderdale by the Sea. When it was not rented out, we spent weekends there. We had to be VERY careful, because it was a "senior" community. We were in our later 20's. I remember the faces in the windows and on the balconies when we were there... just waiting, watching, for something to complain about, such as if we would have placed a wet towel over a chair on the balcony to dry, but also watched for things that did not involve us at all. People would complain if the community pool was not opened at 7 a.m. sharp, if the attendant would be even 3-5 minutes late, it would completely ruin the day of those who did their laps at EXACTLY 7 a.m. sharp. All kinds of small things seemed to make many miserable. I remember how people would get upset if a new employee did put the pool lounges in EXACTLY the "correct" positions, and then never stop talking about it, all day around the pool. At that time and age it seemed humorous to me ! I told my husband...innocently, "I sure hope we never end up living in one of these senior communities one day, instead of enjoying the ocean, the pool, and the golf course across the street, they seem to find the most satisfaction in just watching for something to complain about".... fast forward 35 years and what do we do...move north to central Florida to a "senior planned community", LOL !
