I'm a libertarian so, no. I don't believe in just banning things willy nilly. How about a sign outlining etiquette? Many young people (family pools) never lived in a world without phones and may not realize they are bugging us boomers.

No, it is not okay with me to ban phones in cars. It is currently illegal in many states to use a hand-held device while driving. Florida is one of them.

It is illegal.
Mainly because that can result in accidents where they kill other people. I don't think a phone in the pool will kill anyone.
The using a phone while driving is not something they can pull you over for (that is stupid) it is a secondary, like seat belts. If you get pulled over for running a stop sign, and you are talking on your phone with out your seat belt on, you get 3 citations.

Phones at doctors' offices are usually banned. At least there's a sign there stating such.
Overhearing somebody's conversation can be annoying if one is trying to read or relax.

I have never seen a sign like that at my doctors office, but I use the VA so maybe they don't.
Just because someone is annoying they should be banned? So, if you want to talk to a friend at the pool, that should not be allowed? Seriously?
I am sorry people are annoyed, but really, the worst thing we have to deal with in our retirement is someone talking (on a phone?)

A doctor's office isn't a public pool...
I have signs up in my treatment rooms to "Please silence your cell phones".
Yet, at least once or twice a day, I'll walk into a room and the patient is sitting there, chatting away, and they hold their finger up, as to "shush me, I'm almost done"...
I turn on my heel, leave the room and see another patient...
When I return, they always ask "why did you leave?" I tap the sign and wait for the "I was only on the phone a minute" excuses...
I've had some patients go thru this routine two or three times before I actually saw them... They are the ones who then get the lecture...
I bust my ass to keep my schedule on time. Rarely does a patient have to wait more then 5 minutes past their appointment time to be seen. I expect the same consideration from them...

Why? Do we ban talking, reading? How is it any different?
Poor etiquette would seem to be dependent upon normal expectations i.e. church, library etc.
Obnoxious, loud, abusive, swearing, are judgmental and could be on the phone or not.
If the person is standing still texting interfering, with normal movements, just try the normal civil "excuse me".

All for it ! And, add to that golf courses, NO sitting at the T's and talking on your phone while others wait on you to just GET UP AND GO TO THE Tee. Let's face it, our convenient cell phones, that enable us to keep in touch with a seriously ill family member, or know when to leave for the airport to pick up a friend, however..... we pay a high price for that ! You can't go to a "nice" restaurant for pleasant meal without listening to people SHOUT into their phones all their private thoughts and opinions; some very embarrassing. People walking the isles of grocery stores, again, shouting into phones and ear pieces shoved into their ears so it appears they are shouting at themselves. I don't know the answer. I do remember the days when cell phones were not allowed ON golf courses, IN school classrooms, on IN religious services. I would not be depressed if those days of some kinds of "rules" would return. Fat chance !

I understand the writer, you have to have the experience of trying to read a book at any pool. People in the pool talking, fine, no problem, Children at family pool laughing and playing, fine, no problem, normal pool noises of splashing water, PLUS the non stop playing of the Villages radio station, no problem... but when you add the people who sit on the next lounge, or the ones three lounges down, who shout non stop into their phones, often conversations you wish there was someway to block out, well, the only answer is swim ear plugs, they do help. Good thing because I truly doubt that people will ever quit sharing some of their very personal conversations with the world around them. Personally, I prefer to do that at home, or away from others, but I understand I am very much in the minority. I have always been known as a cheerful, non complaining, glass half full person, and I don't want to change now in retirement. But...I find it so disappointing to have lunch with a friend, and have the entire time punctuated with "on, sorry, hold on, got to take this". One adult child, grandchild, friend, etc. after another, while they laugh and talk and I eat...LOL. I intentionally leave my phone in the car when I met friends for dinner, or coffee, or go to someone's home for a gathering. I absolutely DO understand those who have a seriously ill spouse, or may be waiting for a "lab" result, but honestly, these kinds of true emergencies are not the "norm". I'm sure with will draw many hateful comments as some are nearly physically attached to their cell phones, but I mean no disrespect to anyone, just one (probably the ONLY) person who would like to return to the "early days" of cell pones when they were not used to solve the problem of "boring sermons", or disappointing plays or movies, or a way for students to make it through uninspiring classroom lectures.

Well they could be talking loud. making call after call, taking photos of people who don't want their photo taken, phone ringing multiple times. It could be a myriad of things. I can see why some people could be annoyed by a someone sitting right next to them constantly doing these things. Remember, I'm against a ban.

I have no issue with what you say here, but still, banning phones because? In a community of grump old people, everything will offend someone. Where do we stop it?
Personally, I think people should be banned from talking to a neighbor that is across the street, why is it so hard to walk over and talk like normal people. They should be banned because I don't like it?

Why is someone using their phone at the pool poor etiquette?
Probably because they do not realize how loud they are talking. Plus no one wants to hear what they are talking about. If I need to make a phone call while at the pool I leave the pool deck and head to the parking lot or my golf cart. Common courtesy, common sense.

I’m not sure about anyone else but I have found when people are talking one on one at the pool they are not nearly as loud as someone talking on a phone. I know the tendency when I’m talking on the phone is talking louder than a normal conversation and I believe it happens with most during a phone conversation. I can deal with the phone conversations at a pool but when in a check out line and someone is on the phone that’s rude especially for the cashier who is trying to collect payment.

Ban ALL cell phone usage and make folks use land lines and phone booths. When ever one of my kids attempt to text me, I respond with the message that I do not text, so if they wish to converse with me, call me. If they wish to send me a photo of interest, then I may respond as a courtesy. For those that want to continue this ridiculous thread, by suggesting the need for cell phones in an emergency, that's just fine. I grew up (and still alive) without a cell phone until I was required to use one for work when I was overseas. Most of us in our age group did not have a cell phone (not yet invented) while growing up and we have all survived. The uses of cell phones is a convenience, and useful. Some have made it an symbiotic appendage, sort of like responding to this thread when I had no intention of doing so.
Short: I have never used a Villages pool, as I visualize it as an old person's bath tub. I often wonder that with all the UTIs I have heard of here, if they might not be related to using the swimming pools. Just a thought. All I know is that I have heard several times of a pool being closed while they clean it after someone had an "accident" in the pool.

How about this ........I'm at the pool (in the lounge chair next to you), and my cellphone starts to chime (an annoying tune for a ring tone) and I don't answer it, and let it keep on chiming and chiming and chiming. Pretty soon you will be annoyed and WANT me to answer the damn thing.
Actually, I hardly use my cellphone. It's turned off most of the time. While it does come in handy once in a while, and is great for emergencies, I have little use for it. But others do. It's a habit that's easy to fall into, and can be an annoyance for some, but it's a fact of life now. We have to deal with it until some new technology makes it obsolete.

I am not in favor of banning phones at the pools. I don't find people using phones guilty of poor etiquette, or being either uncomfortable or obnoxious. Why does it make you uncomfortable to find people texting & taking self portraits? If they are texting they are most likely being some of the quieter people at the pool.

Cell phone are dinosaur’s and long gone. Cellar phone now are hand held computers with phone as accessory.
I remember thinking, along about Y2K, that eventually everything would be just one thing. I think we've arrived at that point. My wife's iPad (mine, not so much) is not just her computer but also her phone, meeting room, word processor, photo album, camera, note pad, calculator, sous vide control panel, library, surveillance camera control and recorder, Bible, TV, social access, big-box store, music source, and probably half a dozen other things that I can't think of right now. Most phones today do the same.
Looking back, I was born and lived the first years of my life in a small home deep in the wilds of the Superior National Forest in Northern Minnesota. Three-hole outhouse and a hand pump in the kitchen. Our first phone was one of those wooden wall deals with a hand crank, massive earpiece that hung on the side, and a microphone that looked like a trumpet. Eight-party line. Any call outside of our party had to go through Mary at the switchboard (little concrete-block building with no windows) and then only during her work hours (8 hours a day, weekends off). Long-distance calls had to be arranged through Mary in advance. Calculators were those massive hand-powered things, or you just figured with a pencil and paper. Cameras were--well--cameras. Social interaction was in-person or by letter (3-cent stamp). Library was maintained by a widow in a large farmhouse; one room with books dating mainly from WW2 and before. If you wanted to turn something on, you walked over to it and turned a knob. Outside entertainment was by means of a huge old wooden radio that supplied not only music but radio "shows" such as "The Shadow", "The Lone Ranger", etc. If we wanted to know something, Funk & Wagnalls or Webster's Unabridged Dictionary provided the answer. If you needed something you either ordered it from the Sears catalog, drove an hour to the nearest town, or made/repaired it yourself.
Do our myriad doodads available today represent progress? I don't think so, at least in a social sense. Today we argue about which toys should be allowed in public places. Back then it was never an issue. People seemed happier back then.

A pool and a restaurant are two different things. I walk by Everglades Rec Center every day (almost) and the noice of people chatting from the pool is quite loud even out on the walking trail.

I'm surprised that so many people would take their phones into the actual pool. It seems that would be an accident waiting to happen.
But, no, cellphones shouldn't be banned in the pool areas. A community pool is not the place to expect perfect peace and quiet.

Some people on their phones and their voice is like on a loud speaker!! Very annoying as I don’t care to hear what they have to say?!!
Hmm, then don't listen? The pools are NOT quiet places for meditation - but if you want to meditate I guess you can, and if someone else wants to laugh and play and speak loudly and excited, well, they can do that.

Who's in favor of banning phones at the pool and who's in favor of banning phones in the pool?
Is it poor etiquette, uncomfortable or obnoxious?
I keep running into people standing in place texting and taking selfies.
Why, oh why, in a society with a bazillion laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc., would we ever want to restrict even more freedoms? If they are not risking people's safety or enjoyment (like loud stereos, etc.), then why stop them. If it just because YOU don't like it, well then, you know what people will say to that. You are free to use another pool, go somewhere else, build a private one, etc.

Maybe we should have a designated area for people that want to be quiet, and away from other people. ...
We already have that. We call it "their own homes."

Why just ban people at pool….. The ducks are much quieter. :eclipsee_gold_cup:

It is illegal.
Mainly because that can result in accidents where they kill other people. I don't think a phone in the pool will kill anyone.
The using a phone while driving is not something they can pull you over for (that is stupid) it is a secondary, like seat belts. If you get pulled over for running a stop sign, and you are talking on your phone with out your seat belt on, you get 3 citations.
Well, sometimes, some places they can and will pull you over for talking/texting when driving even if at a stop sign or light. Some places not everywhere.

One more thing this I don’t understand, at the pool, the squares and on a cruise I hear two people talking very loudly about who knows what the funny thing they are people that see each other every day or have been together on the cruise for days, what more can you be talking about? Enjoy your time at the pool and let them enjoy their time at the pool. It is a public pool for all residents and guests, not just you. If you don't want to see them texting, don't look at them. If you don't want to hear their conversations, don't listen to their conversations. It's really pretty basic, live and let live. Phones are allowed at the pools.

Once upon a time back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth, people pretended to be civilized human beings. Now, they care more about their freedoms than they do about humanity.
Yes, you have the FREEDOM to talk loudly on your cell phone on speaker so that everyone within 20 feet of you has to hear most of the conversation. Yes, that's allowed. And yes, the rest of us have to either put up with it, or go somewhere else. Yes, you have the freedom to be obnoxious, rude, uncouth, and uncivil.
You win. Yay you.
Just remember, I also have the FREEDOM to start spontaneously singing at the top of my voice all about menstrual periods and semen.

My take on this thread is that it is NOT about using phones at the pool. It is about being loud and annoying at the pool and not being considerate of others. Sadly, I think one thing this "experiment" has proven is that you can not legislate morality, ethics, or consideration. So to those that are still saying they should ban them at pools and other places. Just recall the more you squeeze your hands the more the water will run out. Legislation (banning) will not solve the problem. It will just get worse, just look around at what a mess the lawmakers have made with everything else.

A lot of messages regarding cell phone noise, but no solutions. So, the old grumps got rid of the yelling kids by banning to Family Pools.
So, now we can perhaps find a way to isolate other annoyance noises at pools. To be fair, we need to ID all. Then perhaps isolate by time and area rather than ban.

I don't think etiquette, in and of itself is a reason to ban phones. What harm is it to use it at or in a pool. Let them drop it once in the pool and see how it works, and to replace it. How about on the golf course, where they are so annoying, But what really bothers me, is texting and driving, and to some extend, holding the phone to your ear and driving. Texting and driving is just like operating a motor vehicle under the influence. In fact worse, your decision making to do it is not impaired. This has become just as big of a problem, safety and accident wise as OUI. It's darn right awful. And it's so preventable. Unless you have a hands free phone set up in your auto and all the new cars have them. Don't drink and drive, I mean don't talk or text. You are killing people.

It's just unfortunate that the solution always seems to be to put an all out ban in place in order to prevent a small fraction of people from being obnoxious.
I've belonged to regular suburban community pools where kids splashing and playing, people listening to their radios and talking on their cellphones and yelling across the pool to get a friend's attention is par for the course. After having driven chatty, giggling kids around in a minivan for years, I have the ability to tune noise out.
I think the rules at a regular suburban pool might be different from the rules at a community pool in The Villages. It makes me wonder if some of the folks are even aware that they are being inconsiderate.

Maybe we should just hire snipers to shoot the speeding drivers. Might work on cell phone users too.
