This site mainly caters to TV.
It's a retirement community.
Subjects usually are restaurants, golf, healthcare or complaining about parking, snowbirds and taxes.
If you're looking for more uplifting topics there are plenty of sites on the internet.

Depends on the day for me. Sometimes there's no threads I'm interested in, other times I actually take notes for further work I may need to do. I'm still grateful to have this forum even when the subjects aren't my cup of tea that day.

I wouldn't say boring. Repetitive? At times. Useful? Certainly. People are only too happy to share information and that can be (has been) a big help.

But it is...limited. In my opinion the powers-that-be want this place to reflect the "America's friendliest hometown" image and thus ban discussions of some issues that flourish on other similar sites. TOTV is a bit less rainbows and unicorns than, say, WVLG, but not by much.

But hey. Their sandbox, right? They get to choose how we play in it.

The problem is you cannot have a discussions of substance. Lately it has boiled down to “who has the best pizza, what is the best village to live in, any one know a good proctologist, etc etc etc.

This site is boring because:

1. No freedom of speech (people are not allow to discuss anything they want to discuss - violating their freedom of speech)
2. Too much freedom of speech (people are allowed to post as often as they want about things I don't want posted)

Those of us who have been on TOTV for several years remember the “political site” that was separate but part of TOTV (where you could opt in or out) and discuss various political issues as they occur in current events. Your opinions were allowed and you could freely discuss the issues but personal attacks were prohibited. Unfortunately, a few could not remain civil and often the personal attacks got “ugly”and I understand may have got personal beyond the site itself. For those reasons, and the time consuming monitoring, the site was “taken down”. I still find TOTV viable and interesting. It’s disappointing that politics has gotten so ugly.

It's my personal observation that there are a large number of people here who are bursting at the seams, with hate/anger/vitriol toward 'them' and are frustrated that they can't express those juvenile and destructive emotions on TOTV. Quite ironic actually, given that there are literally tens of thousands of other internet sites that allow it (typically echo chambers of only those that agree with their views). Then again, it's hard to take serious the spewing from anyone who doesn't understand the simple concept that the 1A does not apply to private entities - whether it be an internet site or place of employment.

I don't understand why the censors don't allow open discussion of politics in a specific area.

Well, I would organize it as a separate group, and you have to agree to terms to be in the group (personal attacks, etc.). So, if a person gets too many brownie points, they are kicked out of the group, not off the site entirely. Let those that want to argue and have spirited political discussions have them, let those that want to complain about dog poop, stay here.

But that said, I have moderated forums in the past and it is a thankless job, and anything they do is wrong in someone's mind. I respect anyone that manages to do the job in a forum like this one.

The old politics forum was a dumpster fire at best. More like a mosh pit with guns and knives. If I remember correctly some advertisers actually threatened to leave because of the vile content that was being posted.

There are numerous political forums out there. Heck, you could even start one yourself. It’s easy set up.

It was also the old, old political forum -- from the time, way back, when politics were relatively tame in comparison to the political hell that is now. It nearly ruined the forum then. The opening page each day was littered with what looked like a propaganda leaflet drop. That happened during the beginning of the end of civil, political discourse. And here we are -- getting worse every day. There are good reasons why politics cannot return to TOTV.

TOTV is a PRIVATE business, and they can do things however they want to. They don't need to provide a place for political obsession.....

It's kind of like when you are having a party these days, and there might be some people who would have been invited in the past, but you don't want them there because they cannot stop spewing venom in the form of either a full-fledged diatribe -- or -- if they think they are really being clever -- their commentary comes in the form of constant, snarky, little comments any time they think they see an opportunity to pounce. Talk about boooooring.

(In 2016 I started a book club. I made an upfront rule -- "No politics!" And we are still doing just fine. Lots of times, we do not even talk about the book, and that's OK. We enjoy all the conversation and the food and the wine.....I sure am glad I made that rule though.)

And so......if political steaming up is all ya got, go find it someplace else. Otherwise, let's talk -- about The Villages, and other topics that are of interest to our age group (there are many) -- and throw in a few jokes, some suggestions for streaming or movies, and maybe a few books, and, of course, those gorgeous photos that are so generously shared with us.

I used to check out TOTV daily. Now I check out TOTV every other month. They ban so much content I agree this site has become boring.

Based on the fact that there is now typically 2 -3 pages of "today's posts" vs. 5+ pages a year ago, I don't think I'm the only person who feels that way.

Funny how no one else mentioned that "exposed anonymity" over the years which may have been one reason Tapatalk App support was removed. :) I discovered this forum before I moved here and found so many of those topics so repulsive . I guess not too many folks used Tapatalk but for those unaware what happened was if you read the political forum using Tapatalk App it exposed the real (fake) user names rather than the fake (fake) user names. Funny how no one else mentioned that "exposed anonymity" over the years which may have been one reason Tapatalk App support was removed. :) I discovered this forum before I moved here and found so many of those topics so repulsive . I guess not too many folks used Tapatalk but for those unaware what happened was if you read the political forum using Tapatalk App it exposed the real (fake) user names rather than the fake (fake) user names. I remember it well.

I never participated in that political forum. I think it was an opt-in thing. If I am remembering correctly, it showed all those posters' screen names as guest -- but it did not take long for anyone looking in to see that the regular screen names showed up easily. I think it was a drop down when clicking on guest.......

I never posted anything in that forum, but you can bet your sweet bippy, I peeked when I found out I could see the regular screen names. It went on for quite a while before they realized they were showing everybody how they really think.

There was some awful, hateful stuff being posted when they thought they were in disguise and could just keep spewing venom.

It would have been funny to watch them make fools of themselves, thinking nobody knew what their usual screen name was, but it was so vile, it gave me the creeps.......and most of them were clearly actual Villagers. (shudder)

Been on the road for about a month.
Came back to find out I was on bad-boy vacation three weeks ago.
Wasn't even here to enjoy it.

Sometime, this site adds value for new villagers, but it can also be very dangerous for new villagers.

Personal agendas dictate.

It is boring because the administrator removes all the controversial, i.e. interesting, entertaining & cynical comments.

I agree and said it was like oatmeal about 5 months ago and haven't been on it since then until today.

No luster lost for me. I use this site for engineering/ technical type questions & ALWAYS get exceptionally well thought out answers or referrals ( garage door squeaks, strange circles in pond, greasy sites on garage door, etc). I use Next Door for doc recommendations & to learn about problems / scams to be aware of. I love this site!

Some get tired of the lack of Fair & Balance standards.

Some did not like the change in ownership.

It may be me, but it appears that some of the Usual Suspects may be in a coma, internet out, or in the TOTV doghouse. It is kind of refreshing actually.

Becomes irritating when they simply HAVE TO rsp with a stupid emoji or one word yada. I think there has been less of that in the last week or so.

I’ve only been a member here for half a year or so, but have seen enough to know how to keep your ball in the park and not be assigned to the bullpen or thrown out of the game entirely. Naturally this will tamper down natural discussions that may involve “P” word. And perhaps relegate back to dog poop, Developer, bad driving, etc etc.

So be it. Now I know that at least one will rsp to this with an emoji or such. So be it.

Since you mentioned it, why can people simply train their pets to poop on their own lawn? Even if you pick up most of the poop that you just watched your dog deposit on my lawn, there is still remnants. :popcorn:
