seashell mulch

Has anyone ever used or seen seashells used as ground cover/mulch in the Villages? It's so popular in south Florida, just curious! Thanks!

I would definitely get ARC approval for this, IMHO I am going to guess it will be refused, which may be why you do not see it around here.

When we got a ground mounted solar array, to curtail weeds underneath they brought a truck load of seashells to spread along the supports that can't be mowed effectively. Seem to work.

Last year we explored the option of seashells instead of stone when we did some landscaping around the front of our yard. We ultimately decided not to use them because of the light weight and concern for them being blown around our yard after storms.

Do not have them as mulch but do have walkways and they work perfect. Much cooler than rock and do not have near as many weeds. Would check with ARC but should not be a problem.

I read seashells may have a smell to them. Also the price of a yard of seashells from one source was $150 so probably not cheap.

The reason you don't see it, is because our soils are alkaline enough to hinder healthy growth and blooms in the acid loving plants we all love. Sea shells would be an alkaline death sentence. If you replaced the construction fill with good black loamy soil, by all means... sea shell away.
