My 10-year-old Weber Gensis gas grill has served me well and now I need to replace it.
The cost of repair would cost more than a new one

What would make a good replacement?

Cheers !

Weber, 10 year warranty on some parts, and replacement parts are reasonably priced.

What do you mainly cook? You may want to consider a gas griddle or pellet grill.

One of the best things I did was have a natural gas line installed. Burns hotter and never run out of fuel.

I'd go with another Weber, but I'd be really surprised if replacing the non-functional parts costs more than a new one. Have you really priced it out? I have 20 year old Weber, I've replaced some parts on and it was way way cheaper than a new one.

We went with a charcoal ceramic grill. It's not as fast as gas but it does provide more flavor, according to my wife...

We are still using the Webber gas grill we bought in 1992. I replaced the burner elements, flavor bars, and grill grates about a dozen years ago and will need to again soon. Last year I had to weld some reinforcements in a couple small rusted areas, easy peasy. I’ll keep it running as long as we are able to keep grilling : )

I'll keeping my Weber Genesis as long as possible. We purchased it nearly 20 years ago. I replaced the flavorizer bars and the grates about 6 months ago and this grill is still going strong. I won't have any other brand.

Agree about the Weber. Ours up north is 22 years old and we use it 3-4 times a week. Parts are cheap relatively speaking when compared to the price of a new grill. I've replaced just about everything but the shell and frame. It does not have a cover and sits outside during the winter.

I never thought I would like a griddle, but I went with a Blackstone. Reasonably priced at Lowes.

I like the flexibility of the griddle.

I'm a Weber fan too. I just replaced the cast grill plates along with the flavor bars on my 10 year old grill with stainless steel and it's like a new grill again. The burners are still in good shape.

My previous grill was a Char-Broil made by Nexgrill and that was a piece of junk. Always covered or in the garage and the burners rusted out after 2 years. Almost exploded on me but luckily I had the lid up and just burnt a little hair. All 5 burners were shot and I could crumble them between my thumb and finger. They had a 3 year replacement warranty but they charged $7 per burner for shipping so the free replacement was $35. Then the wheels started falling off and nursed it along for 4 years and bought a Weber and could not be happier.

Nexgrill makes a few different brands like Char-Broil and Kitchen Aid under license but I would never buy another that they build.

Another huge Weber guy here. I've got 3 kettles and 3 Q's. I find them cheap and refurbish them entirely. Kind of a hobby. Got a couple of their no-longer-made fireplace fire pits also. Still looking for a bug zapper, a cooler, lanterns, and tiki torches. If anyone has any they wanna get rid of...

As much as I like Weber, I like the older ones better - while they were still made in America and Weber hadn't been bought out. I'm really a charcoal guy (even do my day-long smoking on a kettle using the snake method).

Anyhow, Weber's customer service is awesome. Call them up with the model number. They will find any part you need to replace. Flavorizer bars, grates, igniter switch, burner tubes, all can be replaced and most can be repaired. If it's the burner tube, poke the holes anew with a push pin / thumb tack. If it's the grates, saturate in Heavy Duty E-Z Off oven cleaner and seal up in a plastic yard leaf bag to marinate for a day or two. Then hose off and clean with warm water/dawn and then hose off again. Igniter switch may simply need a battery or clean the wiring contacts with emory cloth or something similar.

Caveat: Never had a Spirit or a Genesis, so no first hand experience with those.

I think our Weber is approaching 24 year. The frame is now rusting so we are actually looking to replace it with a smaller 2 burner Weber. The new one is $499. Can’t imagine some replacement parts costing that much. I have replaced the cast iron grates and the flavor bars a couple times.

You can’t go wrong with another Weber. Whether you go charcoal or gas. If you are into smoking meats I would go with a CampChef or the new kid on the block Z-Grill has good reviews. The Weber EPX-6 pellet grill version 2, imo, still has bugs to be addressed.
My “arsenal” consists of a Weber gas grill and a CampChef pellet smoker.
Once again you can’t go wrong with a Weber.

One of the best things I did was have a natural gas line installed. Burns hotter and never run out of fuel.

Sorry to say, Propane also burns hotter than natural gas 2 1/2 times hotter. (2500 BTU's vs 1000 BTUs), which some grilling purists believe is one of the most important factors to keep in mind. Propane is considered to be environmentally-friendly because there's no lead, has low GHG emissions and produces water vapor and carbon dioxide.

MHP grills. I bought one in 1990 and still have it. How many can make that claim? Other than replace the stainless steel burners like everyone does every 3-5 years I've had no issues. I have a second one up at the lake home in Minnesota. Cast aluminum with stainless steel screws and fasteners. Made in USA.

What could possibly be so wrong with it that it would cost between five and seven hundred to fix. All internal parts are available at Lowe's, Home Depot, or online. I have overhauled two of these grills in less than two hours. Cleaned painted new burners new flavor bars. Mine have cast iron grates so never needed to replace those. As far as grills go I don't think you can get better than Weber unless you're going to spend thousands. IMHO

I bought this Weber Spirit Propane BBQ with built-in thermometer a few years ago but my spouse did not care to learn how to grill and I discovered it too much trouble for me to try to do it all so we only used it maybe 3 times.

It's not a gas grill...but if you could live with propane, it's a deal. $400.

Noted parts availablity comment. Igniter on my Genesis went out. Neither Lowes nor Home Depot stocked this item. Per sales person at HD. Weber maintains and stocks the display and he recommended that the Weber rep stock igniter and Weber rep did not or could not stock this part.

Still recommend Weber but they are not the same as my 1st one which would now be over 25 years old. There do appear some competitors out there such as Kitchenaid which might be able to get into their mid/upper range market

Got rid of my Weber over 15 years ago. I went with a pellet grill and couldn’t be more happier. A few of my friends after having dinner made on our grill got rid of their propane grills and went with a pellet grill. There are so many pluses for going the pellet route:
1: 10 different flavored pellets; apple, pecan, mesquite, and others
2: digitally set the temperature and smoke levels
3: can be used as a smoker, I cook all my turkeys using the smoker and then finishing using the grill
4: easy to fill. Can get bags of pellets delivered to your home from Walmart, lowes, and many other companies. Then you just dump the bag of pellets into the hopper. No need to undo the propane tank and finding a place to refill or replace the tank
5: no propane fires. How many grill fires turning into house fires from bad propane lines or leaks.

I also have a Weber Genesis and just replaced all the burners and the complete igniter assembly for less than $200 If you don't want to do the labor yourself, I'm guessing any one of the handyman services could easily do the job. Sure beat paying $1500 for a new one. The Village Tinker mentioned the Weber 10 year warranty which I used for a new thermometer. Weber is very good about fulfilling their warranty.

I agree with Catalina….

Propane burns A LOT hotter than natural gas !

Earlier this year I bought a natural gas Weber at ACE and can personally say my statement above is accurate.

All of my previous Webers were propane except for this one .

I agree with you about the convenience factor …. No more trips to have the tank refilled and an endless supply of natural gas at your fingertips….:)

You can get Weber flavor bars on Amazon for half the price rather than buying them from anywhere else. I, too, had my last Weber for over 20 years. Stick with Weber.

It is worth the spend to replace all inner parts. You could replace everything for under a $150 and you will have a grill working as good as new. I have done this over the years and one of my genesis grills is over 15 years old. The new ones are not made as solid as the old ones

I suggest a pellet grill. We switched and are not sorry. You will have to learn to grill by temp. However, your meats are more jucy and better flavor. I have a Pit Boss. Trager is the best and most expensive.

I bought my Weber in 2011. Compared with what's selling now, no way would I buy a new one. Lift up the cover on an old grill. Then lift up the cover on a new grill. As they say, they don't make 'em like they used to. The old one is three times heavier. I will rebuild mine until they stop making the parts.

I just discovered how wonderful outdoor cooking can be in all its variety. For years, all I knew was single zone cooking on a Weber Genesis or sears equivalent in natural gas.

Recently, however, all the mundane cooking has given rise to an enjoyable new hobby. It all started when my next door neighbor upgraded his Traeger and I ended up with his old one. My initial reaction was this is terrific. Sure wish I knew about pellet grills years ago. What great flavors! Learned to smoke low and slow. Beef ribs, pork ribs, brisket, and more. Learned to roast and finish with a sear on the Genesis.

Next up on the learning curve was another neighbor who gave me his old Weber kettle. I upgraded with a few new parts and discovered the wonderful world of charcoal. Brought back memories from my childhood and I absolutely loved it. Learned to smoke on the kettle and was able to replicate and expand upon what was available on the pellet cooker due to the higher temperatures.

Next up was a small ceramic egg just because I wanted to experience that dimension of outdoor cooking. Much smaller cooking area but deliciously moist food resulted. Used for smoking, grilling, and reverse sears.

My latest acquisition was just a few days ago. It was a stainless griddle insert for the Genesis. This opens up still another dimension and is tons of fun. My favorite thus far on the griddle is breakfast cooking. I can just see my pants begin to get tighter.

I enjoy all my toys and feel so fortunate that my next door neighbor started me on the journey with the Traeger. I don’t have a specific recommendation for your individual situation but feel it is all good. You cannot go wrong with any decision as long as you are outside cooking.

Getting ready for dinner tonight and serving beef short ribs smoked with oak on the ceramic kamado.
