I remember that. The Music Box Theater in Chicago had the same format, but with 70 mm. Saw Dr. Strangelove, Blade Runner, and The Good The Bad and The Ugly there. Nice thing is that you get to watch a favorite classic in a wide screen theater again rather than on TV. Not a bad idea. just wish it were the Rialto.

Trolling, Word of the day for you, or you have no thoughts. Must be hot weather or just older gens who feel the need to crap on a question. Sorry you opened my thread that really set you off to name calling.
“Asking would you watch a movie in the Sharon?” The movie theater has been closed forever, so movie’s at the Sharon, maybe a solution for loss of venue.
Have been to Sharon once for a live performance, but not sure how singing in the rain would sound or the picture quality.
Looks like developers are trying something new.Prices are 10.50 for public, and 8.50 for residents. Will try to catch one of the movies to see, and hopefully my response will not cause BS to attack

Lot of money for a movie we can watch on TV but hopefully this is the start of reopening it.

No BS attack from me...............
What a great idea. I'd LOVE to see old classic movies on a huge screen. I've never seen movies like "Singing in the Rain" on a big screen. I will be looking forward to that. I'd also love to see the 1961 "West Side Story" on a big screen.
As for the sound, The Sharon has wonderful acoustics. I remember seeing The Beach Boys in that theater and Mike Love said they look forward to coming back there because the superior acoustics make them sound great. Hopefully, the sound system will knock my socks off, especially for a classic movie musical. LOVE those.

Tickets are purchased for "Singing in the Rain". YAY!!! I've seen this movie several times on TV but never on a big screen. I'm going with my sister who also loves this movie. Thanks so much to the OP for posting about this.

The article quotes Morse in a way that implies the Sharon movies are a stopgap while the refurb of the Rialto, suspended by COVID, is evaluated further and more movies are released by distributors.
Hasn't the fate of the Rialto already been announced; MVP is taking he spot.
And what about the Barnstorm moves? Situation not addressed.

I wonder how the picture quality is on a large screen with some old flecks.
Not that important for me and I hope you'll enjoy the show.

I suppose this is a way to further utilize this asset. The place does have a great sound system, but what will it be like when the seating area is only 1/4 full? I am looking forward to the reviews after the showings begin. I bet there will not be popcorn or juju beans for sale…

When you see old movie on TV you only see about 2/3s of the wide angle movie made for big screen if that. Sound not same also at home depending on you’re model of TV. I doubt there will be enough interest to make it worthwhile?

The article that was linked in a previous post does state there will be no popcorn sold but there will be some candy. There will be alcohol sold though so that is nice. I've never watched "Singing in the Rain" on a large theater screen with a glass of wine before. This will be a first for me.

We have a Samsung TV with a Samsung sound bar. The sound bar sounds wonderful in our home but it cannot compare with sound in a movie theater. With the Sharon's great acoustics, I'm really looking forward to seeing musical movies there.

I would rather the actual theaters re-open. The theater in Lake Sumter is over booked now at times, unless you like sitting right below the screen. It smell "musty" like the carpets need a good cleaning and no leg room. We wanted to see Thor 3-D and there was only two days and 4 total showings. After paying more for tickets than outside theaters and no cheaper for the concession food, we started going to Leesburg for movies.

I have zero interest for myself as I prefer watching movies at home but I am happy for nearby locals who have been missing the big screen. I hope this is a huge success and leads to more movies for Spanish Springs.

I have seen Singing in the Rain on a big screen in a restored historic theatre (California…) It really was much better than my large screen tv.

To those who think it’s a bad idea to show movies 🎥 in The Sharon it instantly made me think of the old saying, No Good Deed Goes Unpunished! How can anyones mind let them turn this into something bad? That’s a shame that this isn’t looked at as a good thing. The other word that comes to mind to describe the negativity is Curmudgeon. You know sorta like Andy Rooney from 60 Minutes. Always picking doom and gloom from everything.
We could stream them all but we’ll be at the Sharon. Thanks to whoever made it happen.

It is a way to:
A.. Make more $$ at the Sharon (for old movies that should be free)
B. A poor attempt to cover for closing the Rialto
C. Hoping residents won't complain but instead will be glad this is being provided.
All of the above are true

Well that is interesting. I was telling my wife the other day about how I wish that I could watch YELLOWSTONE episodes on a big screen. I would pay to see that!
I would also love to see my absolute favorite western, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, on the big screen.
Old epic movies with iconic landscape scenes and great direction have faded away unfortunately. Playing classic movies instead of the new Hollywood embarrassments is another plus to doing this in the Sharon. Whether or not the Sharon can reproduce the sound and cinematic quality... I don't know.

Why anyone would rather go to The Sharon to watch an old movie is beyond me. Basically it's watching reruns. If I was going to do that, I would do it in my own home DVR'd with no commercials at my own leisure. If you don't have anything else better to do, something is wrong.

You hit the nail on the head with "B". It's the only reason to justify The Sharon and the closing of The Rialto. I HATE going to Sumter Landing with all the traffic to try to go to a movie. Why with over 150,000 people, is there only one movie theater? Something is rotten in TV.

I am happy to see something going on there as long as it isn’t a substitute for opening the theaters. Having only one theater available for a community this size is ridiculous.. Many people were attracted to The Villages because of its entertainment. It has slowly been ripped away from us. I understand that Covid caused a lot of places to close but it’s time to start opening again.

count me in, too. there's something about a big screen for certain classics that you can't get on tv :beer3:

Just like Mark Morse said at the Night with The Developer. They were going to start some movies at The Sharon. Hopefully enough interest to show reopening the Rialto would be worth wild. Movie makers have to produce more films and stop sending them straight to streaming to keep theater viable.

Sounds like a great business opportunity for someone who wants to spend their own money, not the developer's money.

I've always thought The Villages could use a good "classic movie" house. I'm not excited about this though. Films like "Gone With The Wind", "A Hard Day's Night" the original "War of the Worlds" "The Sound of Music" and even "King Kong" are big-screen worthy... they go beyond just story-driven films. The films actually chosen may be "classics" but does the theater experience adds anything... "Breakfast at Tiffany's?" Also... why The Sharon? It's a long trip for thousands of residents... forget the golf carts. At $20+ a couple, to drive that far to watch a readily available film... I just don't see it...
Who knows? Maybe it'll be a huge success.

Yup, just another way to justify the closing of two nice multi-screen theaters. It's a shame and they were all making money too. We miss the Rialto. Went regularly. And we would usually dine in the square's restaurants too. This closure is killing Spanish Springs.
I can watch old movies at home for my cheap streaming subscription and HAVE POPCORN TOO!
Don't understand this move.

After seeing Maverick at the Warren Theater in Broken Arrow, I would love to see Top Gun again in the Theater with the great surround sound they have. It's a trend all over the nation to bring our old favorites back to the Theater. I'm game!

I love watching classic movies on the big screen vs TV at home. I hope this becomes a trend. Back in the 80s in college, several theaters would shows classic films on the big screen, and the lineup would change daily - introduced me so many classics I wouldn’t have otherwise seen (this was before TCM).

This isn't unique or something special that TV is doing. The local theatre where I'm from has been doing this for years. Lots of new and old movies being shown- https://drafthouse.com/northern-virginia
Since most of their profits is from concessions, playing old movies must be close to pure profit. Not enough new movies to fill all the theatres, so they can run some old ones and make a little extra.
