I was recently hit from behind by an intoxicated golf cart driver. I did not know who to call when operating on the multi use paths in the villages. What law enforcement agency has jurisdiction on the paths?

Best to just call 911 and let them determine who’s jurisdiction you’re in. The Villages encompass several jurisdictions.

Call 911 but since nobody tested alcohol at time of accident would think guy gets off on that

Oh my oh my it’s a vehicle incident call 911. Same as if you were hit in a parking by a drunk driver they donor get a free pass. The police do not inforce speed limits on multimodal paths but can investigate accidents.

If no law enforcement was called, how do you know the person was drunk? Do you carry a breathalyzer in your cart?

Yeah, because it’s not possible to know if someone who reeks of alcohol, begs you not to call the cops and can’t stand up properly is drunk. He was probably coming home from church services.

Pretty obvious when someone is drunk, you don’t need a machine to tell you they are. I’m sure the police to do make the charge stick.

Let me help you, this was a tongue in cheek comment for a portrait of drunken characteristics observed by sober people over the years. Of course, there may be younger people who have never witnessed a drunk in public. I’ve been around long enough to have seen a lot.

take out your cell phone, take pics, bring them to your local pd to process.
Best you'll get is an investigator from the pd to inquire at the " offenders" residence.
May scare him/ her straight, or not.

Evidently the local police (call 911) do have jurisdiction over the multimodal paths. They have issued DUIs for people on the paths (and I know of one local woman jailed for said offense) AND yes they can, and do (not as often as in past) issue tickets for those going over 20mph on the multi modal paths. It becomes an expensive felony offense if I remember the big hub but last time someone was caught doing so.
I would ALWAYS call 911 when there is an accident, injury, DUI etc. they will steer you in right direction and you will have documented that you addressed issue. Also, I would take photo of cart and driver if on multi modal in case they take off.
Hopefully you weren’t hit hard enough to be injured.

if someone is obviously drunk you can see that on video. And if you feel guilty about getting them in trouble consider it a public service to get this drunken idiot off the road.

You call the police for that town/county. It's the villages but there is a town that was there before the villages were built. Wildwood, Fruitland park, Lady Lake. All in Sumter county.

I think this is long past of any value. I think the proper answer would be to call 911. How to tell them where you are on a golf cart path? How would the police get there? The original post does not say if there was any damage. You would likely need to wait over an hour. Would the other driver wait?
Not sure that I would like my suggestion but perhaps it would be smart to force people to have plates on their golf cart. Hit by a red golf cart. HUM how to find a red golf cart?

That means every golf cart in every golf cart community in florida would need plates, issued by the DOT, renewed every 2 to 3 years, with a fee.
Don’t think any other government has the authority to require plates/registering carts.

It’s the people that type before they think.
I arrested hundreds of people for DUI/DWI in my career; after awhile it got to where I could guess within a couple of points of what their blood alcohol would be on a drunk driving arrest.
Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know when someone is drunk…..

I hear ya, bro. It's called experience. Same with speed. I can watch a car, and tell you within 2 to 3 MPH its speed. You have to be able to do this to get certified in RADAR and/or LASER. At least where I am from. Thank you for your service.:spoken:

I assume you then, in your career also saw that there can be reasons other than intoxication for a person to appear intoxicated. And without a test a good lawyer has a case (with a doctors testimony) to get the suspect off because of an existing medical condition.
MOST of the time, it's a drunk, but lets not just convict the innocent because most of the time its a drunk.

A law enforcement officer obviously can smell and see the difference between a diabetic emergency, for example, and a drunk.

As one of your articles states… weird. Let’s pick up on a very tiny, infinitesimal happenstance, which a sufferer should realize they have by the time they hit a retirement community, as an everyday experience. But I did have a good chuckle.

Wrong. Husband in his golf cart was hit head on by another cart on MMP. Guy swerved into husband’s side of the path after rounding a curve. Police called and responded and said they had no jurisdiction on MMPs. This was last year.

You call the Sheriff's Dept in the county you are in. i.e Lake, Sumter or Marion. If a person is intoxicated, they can be arrested for "Operating While Intoxicated" on any private roadway. Or. if you are in Lady Lake you call that police department
