Why does the third hole on Volusia take so long?????

From my experience and the comments that I have seen, there is always a problem on the third hole at Volusia. It is a par 4 but many executive courses have par 4 holes and those don't seem to have the problem that Volusia does.

Does anyone have an explanation??

It’s a relative short par four, blind tee shot, and water.

It is a difficult hole. The entire fairway slopes right. Can not start the ball to far left due to trees all along the left side. It is likely your second shot is over water.

Yes blind tee shot with a severe downhill, and tilt of the fairway right towards lots of deep bushes. Out of bounds fence all along left. I’ve seen so many players hit 4-5++
times dribbling down the hill. Then cart path only, all the way to the green, slow- walk back to cart.
Some folks don’t ring the bell near the green and next group does not know if they can drive. Large pond on the right of the green with a tall drop off. And still the out of bounds on the left.

Etc etc.

So be it. Have fun with the challenge.

Far too difficult for the average golfer. No flat lies on second shot and water. Should have been a nice par 3 with drop zone after renovation to speed play up. I avoid unless first out

I play both and my attitude, and “skill set”, does not change. Sometimes I do talk with folks about golf who tend to come across with a “tiered” attitude.

I hit drive next to red stake. Had a side hill, downhill 30 angle for 2nd shot. What is someone to do with a long iron. Pond or in the dump and the fisherman spend 10 minutes looking for balls. Too Few flat areas in the landing area.

I will continue to do so, but NOT for the reason put forth.

It's very simple, whether you are a beginner or have played for 50 years-------YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A PRO TO PLAY AT AN APPROPRIATE PACE AND KEEP UP WITH THE GROUP AHEAD OF YOU. Everyone starts somewhere, it's a great game and everyone should give it a try.
For the beginners: It's OK to pick up after 5 or 6 shots and put it on the green.
For the veterans: You are NOT Jordan Spieth, you do not need to line up your putt from 4 different angles, especially if you are putting for triple bogey. And please note not even a pro takes 5 practice swings before a full shot.

If that advice was followed, you probably wouldn't have a 1/2 hour back up on any hole.

To the person I'm responding to---stop being so adversarial, you're gaining nothing.

I asked a 4-some in front of us why they hadn’t tee’d off yet (group ahead was on the green). They were (incorrectly) adamant that they could not tee off until the green was clear on all Executive courses. …They were still chatting in their carts after the green was clear and two groups we’re waiting behind them.

The thing that slows me down is the difficulty in finding my ball. If I get decent distance, my ball disappears and there’s no telling where it stops because of the extreme slope. I’ve lost balls there even when I hit them right down the fairway.

For one thing you can’t see ahead unless the players ahead get on green! Holes 1& 2 are so short you can play both of them 2 times almost before the 3rd hole player get on the green. I agree this is a bad course to have a hidden fairway.

If your ball goes in the water, you just take a drop and play your next shot - with a penalty stroke. It shouldn’t slow you down that much.

A lot of holes have water and they don’t create backups but for some reason, this hole seems to slow people down.

Biggest reason, in my opinion, either people below don’t ring the bell, or the people above don’t hear it.

It’s a tough hole for a casual golfer.

I have played it several times and there is always a back up. First group is on the fairway and and second group is waiting to tee off. However, I can’t figure out why people are so slow.

Unless you can hit it 250, you should be teeing off as soon as the group ahead of you are approaching the green and as soon as they start driving away you should be hitting your approach shot. It seems that a lot of people don’t even think about hitting their tee shot until people are on the green and they don’t hit their approach shot until the group ahead is out of sight!! Also, a lot of people sit in their carts after putting out. It appears that they are filling out their scorecards or perhaps just reminiscing about the hole. I don’t mind them doing that but they can do this at the next tee box.

And a lot of people don’t start getting ready to hit their second shot until after the other players in their group have hit. A foursome should hit their shots in a 2 minute span.

Putting a ranger on the hole when people are backed up might help expedite play.

That's a fun hole and I've always enjoyed it (tho I haven't played it since moving here last year). IF you've played it more than once and IF you're an average golfer who understands timely play, you should know how and where to hit your tee ball, then your approach shot and ring the darned bell. It's not rocket science. That said, I must agree with my wife, who says there's nothing slower than a foursome of older guys, for all the reasons listed above, especially the difference between expectation and execution.
