Why is The Villages rumored to be ‘the STD capital of America?’ (https://news.yahoo.com/why-villages-rumored-std-capital-090000420.html)

This all started years ago at a Orlando radio station when some DJ's were doing a skit about The Villages. After that it took on a life of its own.

Total nonsense. One OBGyn reported she was seeing higher rates. Sensationalized by the media. No one is up past 9:00PM in The Villages except 300 people (out of 145,000) in the bars. Guess who the 20 something reporters interview for articles? That’s right the 300 people they find in the bars! That is where they met “Mr. Midnight” and other losers. Why not go to one of the 3000 clubs? 25 year olds go to bars, that’s why. Total nonsense. The villages has a very low rate of STD’s. Most of the Villagers are married and lead very quiet, traditional lives. Younger people get upset when they see their elders enjoying life more than they do. “Yuck! You mean they still hug and kiss each other?”

Unfortunately, it’s a false reputation that just won’t go away. Whenever we tell people we have a place in the Villages that is typically the first thing that comes out of their mouths. We have grown very tired of it. The national media doesn’t do Villagers any favors.

I’m getting ready to buy in TV in next few months, this is the nonsense my friends from Colorado (who have never visited TV and are therefore clueless) talk about to me to convince me not to move to TV. This talk is rubbish - I clearly don’t understand why people want to take the enthusiasm I have for TV away from me (maybe jealous themselves?)

If you’re happily married and monogamous, it’s a dumb article

If you’re single, retired in your 70s and your still “able” to get a STD, who cares. Good for you.

Same old nonsense from 12 years ago. 25 year old reporter interviews people in a bar and discovers “Mr Midnight!” Same story in many bars throughout the USA. “My marriage failed and now I am having the time of my life getting drunk every night and having sex with many different women.” Alcoholic reporter interviews alcoholics in a bar and makes a sweeping generalization of an entire retirement community of 145,000 people. What internet fools believe this nonsense?

True or false, news media, years of ongoing rumors, slice it as you will, but it's getting old
with no way to stop all this bs.

Sad, if you travel up north, and stop the first person you see, they will admit
they heard this rumor more than once.

Before we moved here, my neighbor's doctor from up north told her about all

Or is it he'en and he'en or she'en and she'en

I am so sick of hearing I live in the STD, AND orgy capital. There is a book about TV that I read prior to buying here. The book does have a page or two on the orgy underground and TV being high in STDs. But this place has grown from small town to small city. The full spectrum of society can be found here. But it is NOT the STD capital.

I’m so sick of hearing it that I no longer say I live in TV. I tell people I live just south of Ocala. If they are familiar with FL and insist on a city, I will say The Villages.

Just a month ago I was at my aunt’s birthday party in NYC, about 70 in attendance. I heard about the STD thing in TV several times and even saw people smile/smirk when they hear I bought in The Villages.

I don’t know if this will ever go away, especially with people writing books repeating the misinformation.

I had a “friend” who made a similar comment on a Facebook posting. (I have also heard that Scooter the DJ uses this line in his “banter”.) Like all the others, I am tired of hearing this crap. Below is a portion of my reply to the Facebook post. The data is 2020 data. I don’t think much has changed.

The other comment you made in in the post was “What a hotbed of criminality – not to say the STD capital of the World”. I am sure you threw this statement this in because you are just being your sarcastic self. When I challenged you that the STD comment as being an urban legend, you replied “The Villages has its own STD clinic. (It doesn’t. There is a clinic in Wildwood.) Check the State Dept. of Health website for the statistics.” I did. The findings are interesting.
Before I get into the results from the website, I want to give a bit of background on The Villages for the uninitiated. The Villages is an age restricted unincorporated community. The current population is approaching 150,000. It is not a town; it is not a city. It is a community that spans portions of Lake County, Marion County and Sumter County. The bulk of The Villages (~90%) is in Sumter County. Parts of The Villages reside in the towns of Lady Lake, Fruitland Park (both Lake County) and Wildwood (Sumter County). All this really means is those residents also pay city property taxes as well as county property taxes. Surrounding The Villages are the communities mentioned above plus other small communities. The residents of the surrounding communities come to The Villages for their medical needs, shopping, groceries, dining, entertainment, etc. The Village is just not a bunch of retirees, but a large community of all types of folks. A person not familiar with The Villages would not know when they entered or left the community. Again, if you want to discuss The Villages and how it works, I’m all in.
The Florida Department of Health website (FLHealthCHARTS.gov: Site Search) does not list results by cities, but rather by county. The bulk of The Villages is Sumter County, so this is the data I looked up. I am also listing your home county of Brevard for comparison. To support my comment that STDs in The Villages is an “urban legend” here are some findings. The results are for the year 2020, the most current data available.
Total Syphilis per 100,000 population:
Brevard – 36.4 Sumter – 15 5th lowest in the state
Gonorrhea per 100,000 population:
Brevard – 139.4 Sumter – 48 2nd lowest in the state
Chlamydia per 100,000 population:
Brevard – 336.3 Sumter – 133.5 lowest in the state
I think this should put to rest the “STD capitol of the World” thinking.

The rumor reference the STDs was started by a disgruntled female OB-GYN who practiced in a woman’s clinic on 101. I was living in The Villages at the time. This doctor has virtually disappeared after complaints to the Fl Board of Medicine and the resulting disciplinary action by the board. Her license has been null and void since 2014. Her practice was “closed or abandoned” according to the public records at the state level.
I heard that she later recanted her statement but the damage was done.

The author researched the "rumor" for months and she makes it clear those rumors are and were, are unfounded. In fact, she says the rate of STD's in The Villages area, is significantly lower than the rest of Florida.

If there's one truism about The Villages, it's people can't wait to post on social media.

I do. A male friend since junior high was widowed about a year ago. He 80 and has been going at it with several women between the ages of 54 and 78 for a few months now. Why is The Villages rumored to be ‘the STD capital of America?’ (https://news.yahoo.com/why-villages-rumored-std-capital-090000420.html)

There was a reporting period many years ago when the cases of gonorrhea in The Villages went up 50%: from two to three, but that is still 50%, though it is certainly not an epidemic. Meanwhile, in the rest of the three counties of which we are a small part, the numbers were MUCH higher, and also much higher per 100,000. They remain that way. But there are newspapers that publish garbage that love to keep printing these lies. Young reporters and readers find it good for a laugh. I suspect that it is the top argument children give for why their parents shouldn’t move here. There are many diseases that are much more common here, some of them orally contracted and not sexually transmissible, like heart disease, diabetes, and emphysema.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but are there any facts or data to show that the national media hates TV or is this just another conspiracy theory? Thanks Jim
Well, as Winston Churchill once observed, "A lie can make it halfway around the world before truth can get its pants on".

I don't think there's any conspiracy, nor do I think that TV is any more (or less) hated than any other comparable-sized community. The truth of the matter is that, as a group, TV'ers live far healthier and more active lives than similarly-aged people in other places. Nature being what it is, there is a certain amount of hanky-panky going on among healthy people of whatever age, and alcohol is a pretty good "lubricant".

But, going back to Sir Winston's quote--sex sells. Sex generates hits, sells books and movies, etc. A story about randy Villagers may have a small grain of truth to it but I'll guarantee that it will arouse far more interest among a whole lot more people than, say, a story about Villages water volleyball or group quilting, and will be blown far much more out of proportion than the reality of it ever was.

Americans by and large hunger for the salacious. Always have. Follow the money.

While TV STD reputation is pure fiction, it is still responsible for many snickers when I tell my friends from NY that we have a winter home here. It gets a laugh but I feel it really degrades the true image of TV. Aside from a few perverts that May chose to move here for that reason, I do go out of my way to explain that STD statistics are on a county basis. TV is comprised of three counties and there really is no way to site such statical proof, even if it existed, for this reputation.
BTW some people still are afraid to go to NYC because of its reputation from the 70s 80s and 90s. In fact when in the 2000s NYC was statistically rated the second safest large city in the US.
SO WE WILL GRIN AND BARE IT, (sorry for the pun)

There are also a lot of drivers that are SAD (Stupid Aggressive Drivers). I never understood why old, retired people drive crazy and crazy fast. Are they rushing to take a nap or beat other people to a 2 for 1 sale? Or is it just a muscle memory thing when they used to be late for work?

No, they're "aggressive" because they know that they are close to the end of their lifespan,
and want to get things done, and going slow just doesn't do it..... IMHO

The doctor’s name was Colleen McQuade. If you google the name and STDs in The Villages, you will find the original interview. I tried to copy and attach a link but couldn’t.

That shows a great PARADOX - TV Land can't simultaneously be BOTH the "Friendliest Hometown" and a dangerous mass of out of control aging "banshee, Kamikaze" aggressively vicious drivers.

Whenever it comes up that we have a place in TV, the STD thing is mentioned. My reply is, "Well unless you can get one playing dominos, I'm safe",,,or "from my experience, you'd have to work a lot harder to get one, than to avoid one."

The reality is that the myth that there is a community of old people all swinging and partying and sharing STDs is a lot more interesting than the reality of a community of old people playing golf, pickleball, and line dancing poorly.

There was a very pretty blonde stewardess that used to hang out there. For what that is worth?

Is WHITE hair considered "blonde?"

With all the folks dying of heart attacks, cancer and strokes here, I find it interesting to think that anyone is scared of a treatable case of a STD. I don't care if folks snicker when I mention living in TV. If old folks here are having such a good time (and able to) that there really was an influx of/or STD pandemic, I applaud them. Those old folks are my heroes; legends. Personally, I am not afraid of contracting any STD since I do not venture outside of my marriage and never have, and have never wished to. I consider TV to be the elephant grave yard, whereas many others think of TV as the senior Disneyland. I don't worry about blemishes on the TV name. If I cared, I would not be here. Like I said before, the truth is that there are much higher rates of STDs in other areas of the country, and definitely other areas of the world, so why worry "be happy."

10 years ago it was blond (maybe some dye involved). She was physically a "knock out" and seemed to want to dance with everyone at Katie Bells, like spread herself around, she had a great opinion of herself and it was justified by her PHYSICAL presence. The problem with her was that as the night wore on and the bar was about to close, she became more and more angry in a sly way. She seemed to like to try to get the men around her to fight .She would agitate for a fight. She might even have wanted to participate at that point. But, by then I had decided that it was time for me to go to my car.

Not to mention the national media hates us and likes to spread negativity about this place

Why is that. What do the main media outlets have against us?

MSM and social media are enemies of the villages and will do ANYTHING to discredit the villages at the direction of their overlords. Take it very seriously.

Here was the question:

Why is that. What do the main media outlets have against us?

MSM and social media are enemies of the villages and will do ANYTHING to discredit the villages at the direction of their overlords. Take it very seriously.

And here are the answers:

Let’s see:
TV is 98.5% white, has much more than the national average income and assets, and is overwhelmingly Republicans———of course the national media hates us

you hit it right out of the ball park. i believe it's the #1 reason. :posting:

I don't feel hated by the media. I think we are more of a source of amusement. However, while the issue of STD's and sexual promiscuity is made up, the scene from a political rally held in TV, clearly showing one villager shouting "F**k Tr##P" and another villager clearly shouting back "White Power", well that was real, and it was ugly, and it may have only been 2 people out of 130,000, but it is what it is.

Anyone casually visiting TOTV might also be taken aback at times by how nasty we can be to each other on here.

Lots of those headaches going around. Somebody needs to invent a little pill for that and make a fortune from the men that live around here.

How many times does this myth have to be debunked. You can Google places with highest STD levels and TV is not on the list.
