I know there is a method to the clicker but I'm not sure I have it right. Can someone explain it to me?

When your pet does the RIGHT thing, you click once immediately and then give a treat. Soon, you eliminate the treat. Later, you eliminate the click.

If you give a command and your pet hesitates, wait for a while before giving the command again. If you say "sit" and the pet just looks at you like you are stupid, don't say "sit" again too quickly. Wait. If it is a dog, the dog is deciding whether to obey you or not. Or, the dog is trying to remember what you want. Give the dog time to think. As soon as the dog sits, even if it is because he's tired, click and treat and say "Good Sit".

Ignoring bad behavior while rewarding good behavior works best.

Here is a quick video that explains the process.
