First my wife and I are wondering why there is nothing like a clicker, homelink, etc for these gates. Seems to make sense to have that rather than cards that might get lost, have to pay for etc. Especially since the gates mean nothing
Secondly we were going past a gate and watched a lady open it with her cell phone???? anyone know what that is???

Sounds like that might've been me. I don't open it with my cell phone. I have the gate card in a card holder attached to the back of my cell phone case. That way I don't have to remember to move it from my car to my golf cart, or worry about losing it. I never forget my cell phone, so the card automatically comes with me no matter which vehicle I use. I've been questioned about that a few times before, people have actually stopped me when I took the golf cart through the Walmart gate in the old section about it. I guess it's not a common thing. It just seemed like the common sense solution to "two vehicles, one card."
The gates absolutely mean something. They mean that no matter what you're doing, how much of a rush you're in, you have to actually STOP - before you continue. That is traffic control. That's why there's no clicker or bar code. You have to actually stop long enough to get that card up to the pad, and there's a good half-second delay before the gate actually goes up.

I think almost everyone would agree that they should replace the card readers with better versions that have a much longer range. Something that would read your card still in your pocket.
Also add alternate readers, such as reading your ezpass toll transponder so you won't need a card in your car.
Improve the system.

considering I have had experience with gates like this running an HOA for years. ..... there is a way that you would still have to stop. So rather than respond to a remark like everyone is stupid, how about thinking that there are many different ways to achieve the same goal and that perhaps the current one could possibly be improved to such a point that everything can be achieved????
is that SO hard to do????

One possibility is that she had a sensor on the outside mirror that opened the gate while she was checking her phone about something else.

Whoah, hold on there my friend. I was responding to a comment that was refuting your statement that the "gates mean nothing". You had offered no acknowledgement that they do serve a purpose, nor did you offer an alternative and better way to accomplish what the gates provide. You simply stated "especially since they mean nothing."
I agree with Orange Blossom's comment. Many people post opinions that the gates do nothing because they aren't designed to turn away non-resident traffic. The fact that is not their purpose doesn't mean they have no purpose. As one who frequently wishes to cross busy streets in my golf cart, I appreciate the purpose and function of the gate. I don't see how agreeing with his statement came across as thinking everyone else is stupid.
If you want to start a conversation about how you have a superior way to accomplish what the gates provide, do so, but that's not what you were on about.

the windows never went down and she held the phone in front of her so it was done from the phone not a card I'd bet a free luch at McDonalds :D that she didn't use an APP on the phone (or the phone by iteself) to open the gate. The 25+ year old technology the gates use have no way of accepting a signal sent by a phone or phone app. Something ATTACHED to (like an attached wallet) the phone is another story but the phone itself, didn't happen. Also, it's possible the gate attendant (if it was an attended gate) opened it for her. I have had that happen as well.

I have my card attached with double sided tape to the little triangular window in front of the driverside window of my car. When i pull up to the gate, the reader senses my card and automatically opens the gate. It works for me 100% at all the gates. No need to touch the card or roll down the window.

Some car window tints are made of a metalic material. The card reader distance capability is significant lower with metalic film windows

We have two cars with a "gate " card in each. Neither of them work from inside the car, window up or down. The cards have to be held 4 to 5 inches from the readers to work. Guess not all gate cards are created equal. No big deal for me.

Often I can get close enough that I don't have to roll my window down. I just turn the phone so the card is facing the plate, and it opens the gate.
As long as you don't have some kind of treatment on your window, it'll work through the glass. If your windows have that particular treatment, it won't work through the glass.
Apparently the woman in the OP with the cell phone, had windows that didn't have the treatment.
Secondly we were going past a gate and watched a lady open it with her cell phone???? anyone know what that is???
Yup! The way it worked is that the lady's huband was manning that gate and she called him on her cell phone and said: "Honey, open the gate for me!"
Works every time.

The system works fine. You have to STOP in order to get through. That's the point of the gates. They could accomplish the same thing WITHOUT needing a card by making the gate delay opening for 2 seconds (or whatever they choose). I think when first implemented many years ago they had other intentions for the card data but now it's just too big and the system is way too old and outdated. Besides, the delay with using card really don't make it much safer for golf carts. At some gates you can't even see the carts (and vice versa) because of shrubs.

I'm "the other poster". What two fingers do you recommend?
Truth is, rolling down the window and holding the card up to the reader is no problem imo. Both cards are on their own keyring. At least we don't have to punch in a code on a keypad.

I do not agree. Why should the residents pay to upgrade a system that is working just fine. Those that find it an inconvenience can simply change their thinking - for free.

Do a search for "gate chip" on this forum. There are several people who will come to your hose, clone your card onto a new chip and stick it inside your mirror housing.
Most charge about $25...
