We golfed today at Southern Oaks. On the back 9 today. The Misquitoes were HORRENDOUS!!!
If it was up to me I was ready to quit on hole #12 and go back to the Starter for a credit. But the other guys wanted to stick it out. It just got worse. Especially close to the water…. We passed by a white service truck off the cart path and the side was covered with hundreds of them. It truly ruined the round as we simply had to rush shots. Not fun…
We decided to drown our sorrows with a beer at the center Bar at Sawgrass. The guy buying brought 4 plastic glasses of beer and said “guess how much”. We all guessed $4 a glass. He said they don’t serve in pitchers as we typically get after rounds at other places. And they charged $7.00 per glass!!! Was like almost $30! A pitcher at other TV restaurants is about $13. What a ripoff.
So, we won’t golf at Southern Oaks until fall, and no more Sawgrass. Yikes.

Hell, a 6 pack costs about 7 or 8 bucks. Why not just keep some cold ones on ice in your golf cart cooler to have outside with your golf buddies after the round?

Can't say for sure what you saw, but be aware there are tons of "blind mosquitos" in that area of TV. They are midges that don't bite. They look just like the biters.

Absolutely correct. They did not bite, thank goodness. Honestly it was horrible. Swarms. Worse than lovebugs at their worst. When I came home, she looked at my back and I had at least 15 smashed bugs on my back. No doubt were on my shirt and I sat down in the cart.
Don’t they spray for mosquitoes down there as they do north of 44? If they are there, and known, why??? I feel sorry for the homeowners down there. As well as the Turnpike noise, but that’s another thing. Plus the $7.00 beers…. grrrrr.

And the mosquitos, that’s included in the $3 to play Southern Oaks plus the free turnpike noise and views.

I live in Hawkins and have never once seen any swarms of blind mosquitoes nor do I hear traffic noise. Also, tell the guy to ask the price before ordering if price is a concern. they have the menus sitting ALL OVER THE BAR with the prices listed. I have to laugh at all you folks who post a thread about prices you paid as if they hid the price from you. As another person said, get yourself a six-pack and load up that cooler.

They might not bite, but they are sure annoying while standing still trying to putt.
Our only solution was to play drive up ready golf, drive up very quickly, no practice strokes, one hit, hop back in and continue driving

If I asked the price first I'd have said no thanks. If I didn't it would be a long time coming before I bought another one there. It has nothing to do with north / south but everything about getting g ripped off. Besides beer in a plastic cup belongs on the course, tailgating a football game or at a baseball stadium. Pretty low standards to serve beer in a plastic cup at the clubhouse.
For the self-serving person who said if you cannot afford it don't play or come to south villages. I'd bet that 80% of TV has more than you, especially class. If your philosophy represents that of southern population I'm glad I live in the better part. Snobs have no place in our community. We're all here to enjoy what life has to offer not count your money.

Oh no, now seat size is a topic for complaint.
As you visit various venues in TV, have a tape measure handy to get the size.
Post here, size and most important location…..thereby the bashers can pick which to respond to.
(Makes the butt size comment even more silly.)

From the OP to address a few comments here. Our tee time was 1pm. The Starter told us they just cancelled the cart path only on ALL holes, guess the course dried out enough. That made the round ok. But those mosquitoes again were horrendous. Swarms of hundreds if not 1000s. We could not believe it. Again I would have bailed after 2 holes. The 3 others, let’s go on…. And as for asking beer prices at the Bar… really??? Each week one of us buys the pitcher of beer. Typically $13 or so. Frosty mug and works out to about 1.5 beers each. Would never go back… I guess it’s a captive audience thing. What other options in the area???

I think the reason for serving beer in a plastic cup is because the seating in the area is also used by other restaurants. So, some people are only picking up a beer to take to a table and eat. I guess they could use glass mugs at the bar only, but it may be difficult to control. If you are just going there to drink it doesn't seem to be a comfortable bar atmosphere.

The blind mosquitos, like the love bugs, are a short-lived seasonal appearance. They'll be gone soon enough. The land that has been developed south of SR44 is still very wild, whereas northern areas pushed the wildlife and insects out many years ago. Plus, there is a much higher ratio of wetlands and preserves down south. This is all part of the growing pain. Now, the price of beer at Sawgrass & McGrady's...I agree that is straight up gouging. Then again, the prices are not a secret. Vote with your wallet. I do.
By the way, I saw two pairs of love bugs on my front porch yesterday. They're making an early appearance.

Not to pile on BUT, Pizzas can not be changed from menu, side salads are exactly the same salad at Willey and pizza place both served in a plastic container at that price. $14 burger with sides served in paper. $16 fried shrimp no side served on paper. $7 beers served in plastic. $4 mini desserts. I do like the Village Green store. The price of golf is more that other established courses. The prices at the Irish pub are over the top. Southern Oaks is set up to fail. The prices are set up like it is an upscale country club but served like it is a cheap food court in the mall. I Love The Villages but totally disagree with how Southern Oaks is set up.

The OP again. Did not want to “pile on”, but since it was brought up…. Southern Oaks can be classified as boring. IMO. The fairways are quite wide, mainly because there are few trees around, esp OAKS. Hardly any areas of shade. And yes, kind of a boring course. Would not call it pretty. Yesterday was the 2nd time we played there, and honestly the last for a while as we enjoy other Champ courses so much more - mosquitoes or not. Not worth the trip.

The north was built over a 30 year time period, south of 44 started 5-1/2 years ago, I think we have quite a lot down her in such a short time and we are getting the new hospital too. Played Harbor Hills a couple of Sundays ago and the blind mosquitos on the back nine were over the top ! Beer prices there are also over the top !
McGrady’s has a “happy hour” from 3-5 pm when you can get domestic drafts for $3 bucks . And their glasses are a full pint. Don’t know if that applies on weekends.
Best price for beer is at Mallory. $8 (or so) for a pitcher $2 and some change for a glass.
Worst for beer prices are Fenney Grill and Havana where they get you for $15/$16 + for a pitcher.

We also played yesterday and your assessment was spot on. The mosquitos were “huge” but were mainly near four or five holes and were in attack mode. There were so many around the water cooler and tee box on the Par 3 8th hole on the back nine that it was nearly impossible to tee off. And it sure felt like they were biting but we didn’t stick around to let them. Our golf cart and golf bags were covered with them from our brief stop at the tee box. The Pro shop was notified a week ago about this problem. They really need to at least address these impacted areas. Unfortunately, the 8th and 9th holes are very close to the golf front homes.

Exactly. Where we moved from was out in the country. It was 20-30 minutes to ANYTHING. Here, I can get to a dozen or so grocery stores, two townsquares and a nearly unlimited amount of recreational activities in 20 minutes.
One nice thing about “down here” is that most of the people are still young and energetic. They’re also not snobs.
I still can’t wrap my mind around why so many people up north just can’t be happy that we’re happy. It’s just weird.

I still can’t wrap my mind around why so many people up north just can’t be happy that we’re happy. It’s just weird.
I agree completely with Ken, and the BS about not looking or feeling like the villages, we moved from the north part of the villages to the South area, enjoy it better down here, to each his own. I guess the north bashing of the south will never end. Enjoy life, and don't feel like you have to bad mouth what others are enjoying.

The primary issue is the lack of amenities in the southern section of The Villages and that will continue. The business model for the south, is different than the older sections of The Villages and shows no sign of changing. There's only 1 reasonably accessible golf course and it's glorified pit. When you're the only game in town, you can be unreasonable with pricing, quality and playability.
In my opinion, the southern areas of The Villages are marketed with smoke & mirrors. It's nothing like northern area and never will be. It doesn't look like The Villages, it doesn't "feel" like The Villages and the demographic is different.
You don’t know what you are talking about. There are about 7 golf courses under construction right now south of 44. Bet you weren’t even here when the northern area was under construction like the south is now.

If you are happy in the Village that you live in, why are you so negative about where others live.
Have been in TV since 2007, LSL was a ghost town, for shopping with one grocery. SS was the established area, and that’s where we shopped. Our first area was Mallory and we choose to move farther south.
Many of us have watched as the new areas grow, new progress and in awe of what was coming. We out grew house 1 and 2. Our current house is a designer with golf cart garage, in what used to be the middle of TV:girlneener:
We are now building guess where to the area YOU think doesn’t feel like the villages.. this will be our Fourth house, heading south in the land you detest.
It’s OK, we hope the smoke and mirrors you speak of will keep us off everyone’s radar, and let us enjoy the Villages We pay for and enjoy living in.
You could however volunteer to buy me a free house where you think we should live, and Will gladly take your money:pepper2:

Yikes.

Can't do anything about the bugs. The high prices are something else. Maybe caused by the high rent charged by the owners, and or the greed of the businesses. The solution is play golf and eat an any of the many other choices here. Leave that place to the residents who have more than they can ever spend. The menu sucks anyway.

There is noise in Hawkins -- there is nowhere you go in Hawkins that you cannot hear the turnpike -- sometimes it is very minor and other times loud.
St. Johns is worse than Hawkins -- I've walked every inch of both.
No disrespect, but it is like we live in two different Hawkins.

There is a lot to dislike about South of 44 in The Villages -- I won't debate that.
What I do like, which is turning lemons into lemonade, is that my Village is bordered by the Turnpike and a County or State, dunno, protected preserve. There will never be apartments, section 8 housing, Fish Games, multi-generational housing, etc. near my home -- everything is done, landlocked. In 5 years, I won't have to complain about scenic farmland turning into apartments, etc. I don't have to worry about any encroachment -- it cannot happen.
I like that we are closer to the airports, Universal, Disney, Tampa, etc. The turnpike is just a couple of miles away, 75 is just 5 minutes away. Costco, coming to Claremont, is just 40 minutes away. I like Orlando area shopping more than Ocala area shopping.
Shops and stores will come to the south -- Middleton and Eastport areas -- they will be new and clean. There will not be old and dingy communities near the south -- at least, not near the new lands of The Villages. There will be less blending of those communities -- which seems rampant in the north and middle Villages.
There is, genuinely, a LOT to like about the northern Villages, no doubt.
I've just learned to appreciate what I have.
The primary issue is the lack of amenities in the southern section of The Villages and that will continue. The business model for the south, is different than the older sections of The Villages and shows no sign of changing. There's only 1 reasonably accessible golf course and it's glorified pit. I don't see anything controversial in the OP, unless you find complaining about mosquitos and high prices for beer in plastic cups controversial. I'd bet one of those $7 beers that if the OP had an identical couple of complaints about Lopez, the folks who live north of 466 wouldn't get all upset and take it as a personal affront.
I don't care who lives where, I don't need to bash anyone about their choices, or what they like about their area, and I don't care who doesn't like things about where someone else lives.
As an impartial observer, my take is that any criticism of anything in the newer southern areas is taken as an insult by some who live down there.

Perhaps you misunderstood. The Center Bar where we got the beers is INSIDE the Sawgrass Mill mall. One would not typically buy a beer there and go to their golf cart. I would guess that most folks would bring their own beer in cans for that. The bar there of course had bar stools and lots of tables for people to consume their beers… in plastic. Just sayin’

Surgery at el Camino is on a 7-3 schedule, any cases after hours is a bus ride away. It’s run like a surgery center. Not their fault, it the footprint of care.
True trauma center will be welcomed. 24 hour surgery trauma on site, teaching facility, residents, med students, and education classes for staff within minutes of facility. Can’t wait for the build to begin,

You are notJM. Dream on and hope for the best when you have an emergency.
If you're in Fenny, yes, I am...
I am closer to Morse and Meggison than you are...
You'll have to either come across Warm Springs, or the new Bexley Bridge...
The other route would be down Marsh Bend to 470... and then east all the way across to where it crosses the turnpike...
Me? The entrance to my village is less than a mile from 44 & Morse. A simple shot down to where it becomes Meggison and keep going thru Citrus Grove and it'll dump out just west of the new hospital site...
Maps are easy to read...

Just curious what village are you in?
Osceola Hills @ Soaring Eagle... Just north of Lake Deaton Plaza

But you choose to bash the south and have been doing so for quite a long time.
Wrong again. I've never bashed the southern areas. I am consistent in my criticism of those on both sides of the issue...
What I DID say was that we did indeed look at the southern areas when we were home shopping. The major issue (for my wife) was the power lines... She refused to buy a home where they were nearby (or even visible)...
I have also said we loved Marsh Bend and would have bought there if we could have found a home we liked...
I have also stated that the new village of Richmond looks very nice. If something came up there (with a bit more room than we currently have, I'd consider moving there...
We wound up in Osceola Hills. It worked for us...

Word is that “StrangerThings” happen in Hawkins : ) In fact, didn’t Netflix make a series about that? Perhaps one of you is living in the upside down version of Hawkins?

It runs northwest and southeast.
And south of the villages, it shoots mostly east over to 95, just north of Palm Beach...

My friends bought a nice place in 2007 in the newly built Village of Largo. They tried to convince us to buy then, and I was tempted, because the development would end at 466A. But, alas, we just weren't ready to jump then.
What we were told would be the southern limit is closer to the northern limit than the southern limit now, and it won't be long before the newbies in the newest new areas of the south will refer to our area (we wound up in Poinciana) as part of the "Historical" section.
It's all good. It's a big place, getting bigger. Can't wait to drive my cart to Disney World.

They might not bite, but they are sure annoying while standing still trying to putt.
Our only solution was to play drive up ready golf, drive up very quickly, no practice strokes, one hit, hop back in and continue drivingAt least they've finally found a way to get people to play faster

We golfed today at Southern Oaks. On the back 9 today.
Yikes.
What kind of beer was it ? If it was a craft beer, that or more is the going price these days.

Would never go back… I guess it’s a captive audience thing. What other options in the area???
If you'll never go back to the course and bar, what do you care about other options in the area for?

No, Tierra del Sol has the same happy hour.
All of the developer owned restaurants have the same happy hour

Besides beer in a plastic cup belongs on the course, tailgating a football game or at a baseball stadium. Pretty low standards to serve beer in a plastic cup at the clubhouse.
That is not a Clubhouse. It is part of a new concept similar to a square. You know the squares, where they serve beer in plastic cups?

That qualifies as a ripoff in my world.
A rip-off is when the price of something is raised due to circumstances. Like, during a medical emergency the price of medicine doubles.
When beer is priced out of your budget and the vessel for drinking it offends your social standards that is NOT a rip-off. :beer3:

Yes, I see that now. That great map that was linked is an excellent visual for everything south of 44.

Different opinions for different people, if everyone had the same opinion the world would be a boring place. And the beer isn’t priced out of my budget and I don’t mind drinking out of a plastic cup. However, I do search out a good relative value and won’t buy a beer (or just about anything else) when I can get the same thing someplace else for significantly cheaper.

But you didn’t have a $7.00 beer in a plastic cup. The drama must therefore continue.

Might want to take another look at that. Fenny is on the same side of the TP as the new hospital will be. He will not need to cross a bridge but those north of the TP will need to cross.

Well first it sounds like midges and not mosquitos. Second, you do realize that outdoor activities in the tropics will have critters You're not in Kansas anymore. Thirdly, change to a good bourbon. Mine brand has only gone up 4 dollars a bottle in 2 years. Way more bang for the buck IMO. )

I believe you are correct
Now, how does crossing a bridge make the trip longer/shorter than it would otherwise be?
Looking at the map, it looks like pretty much a tie distance wise, eventually, we'll get to time it

I think you’re correct GE. Gonna be a minimal difference in distance once everything is finished.
I think both will be within 20 minutes or so by golf cart….maybe less.
