September is upon us and it’s getting cold up here in the Berkshires. Just closed up the windows and put on a sweatshirt for the first time in a very long while. Temperature is dropping fast and is forecasted to hit 45 degrees later tonight. Time to pull the fishing boat from the lake, take the window A/C unit out for the season, and start the Villages packing pile.

Even though September is the best month of the year here on Cape Cod, my wife and I can not wait to get back to the Villages in three weeks.

Just got back from five days in Minnesota to attend the state fair...end of August, cold and rainy. No better reminder of (one of many) reasons my wife and I love Florida.

Fair was kinda disappointing though; one of my favorite exhibits, the snake and lizard zoo, was closed. Seems as if they had a reptile dysfunction.

Your welcome, but don’t forget we also pay significantly more in property taxes with no homestead exemption as well as for trash pick up and base water and sewer usage while not there which helps keep your rates lower. The snowbirds are both the geese that lays the golden eggs as well as the gift that just keeps on giving.

There is much more to it than that, the northern states won’t let you give up residency, and let you stop paying them income taxes, that easily. Our problem is that we still have a couple years to go to qualify for Medicare. Until then we have to buy our health insurance from the state exchange of our primary residency. If we declare Florida our primary state of residency, we would have to buy health insurance through the Florida exchange and would be out of network for all of our doctors up north, which we don’t want to do. Once we turn 65, the Medicare network is national and we can declare Florida residency, get the homestead exemption, and still be able to see our existing network of doctors. Not that I want to get any older, but we are very much looking forward to that aspect of turning 65.

I'm very grateful for those folks who are seasonal and snow birds. I'm sure the retailers and restaurants are grateful too. Your business keeps these businesses with their heads above water. Thank you very much. Hubby and I were once seasonal residents before moving here full time so I know what it is like to be scorned upon.

So…. Does that make full-timers a cancer that won’t go away?:ohdear:

Frogs May be closer to a dirt nap than the younger snowbird’s. However not Frogs, snowbirds or snowflakes have expiration date stamped on the bottom of their foot. So dirt naps can occur no matter what their residence status is.

Bingo.

The contributions in TOTV from the anti-snowbird types are as predictable as the seasons. Sept. Oct. is the start, rising to a crescendo around the end of December, then slowly petering out on towards spring. But I doubt that their numbers are really anything more than minuscule. A few disgruntled people can make a lot of noise.

Sure, it gets more crowded here than in the summer. Sure, there are snowbirds who don't really understand the rules of golf cart usage. And yes. Tee times can become complicated. But that is minor, really. For my part I enjoy golfing during high snowbird season because of all the interesting people you meet. A farmer and his wife from Iowa...a Canadian couple this past March who were not shy about sharing their disgust with how things are run up there in The Great North...a 96-year-old guy who still swung a mean club and who got a hole-in-one during our round (it WAS El Santiago, but still impressive)...several people from Baaaaaahston who were the exact opposite of what we were told to expect from New Englanders...some people from UPSTATE New York (why do they always add UPSTATE when identifying where they come from?)...and so on. Overwhelmingly good people. A couple of toads too, but you'll find toads here pretty much year round. Snowbirds give a lift and an added positive dimension to TV that just isn't there in the summer.

Maybe it’s your area that has issues.
What snowbirds don’t have a lawn and pest service. If they didn’t the lawn would be more than a foot high.
Our neighborhood has about 50% snowbirds, all of their lawns look as good if not better than the full timers.

We did have a newly widowed lady, that had never paid a bill on her own. She let her lawn guy lapse, but until it was straightened out , her neighbor mowed the lawn for her. Let face it, the lawns are so small here it’s under 20 minutes or less to mow

Driving through Arkansas with my parents back in the late 70s(?) our NY license plates drew some odd and less-than-friendly looks. This was back when the Federal Govt was going to bail out NYC and not everyone was happy with the idea. The attitude changed when we explained that we were from the "other" NY, the part that didn't have the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty, and that we weren't happy about it either. That's when I started adding "Upstate."

It also helped when I moved to Md and explained that I had never seen NYC and was actually closer to it in Md than where I grew up.

It seems there are many people who are unaware that vast majority of NY State sits between NYC and Canada.

They say Up State because people always ask because NYC and Upstate NY are two completely different places. Everything north of NYC is called upstate, lol. I have a son who lived in NYC and now lives in Upstate. I live in Mass and when people ask me where he lives and I say NY the next question is always, NYC or Upstate. It is strange, I agree. But that's why.

...some people from UPSTATE New York (why do they always add UPSTATE when identifying where they come from?)...and so on. .

We add "Upstate " because to simply say "New York" is an incomplete answer. New York could mean "New York City" which is a completely different world than "Upstate". Upstate is very rural, very green, punctuated with many fascinating and beautiful natural geographic features, such as gorges, waterfalls, rivers, marshes, lakes etc.
NYC is mostly concrete and is densely populated with skyscrapers and high-rises.

Attitudes tend to be markedly different between the two areas, and generally political affiliations tend to be more "Red" than "Blue" upstate, compared to NYC.

I love visiting NYC, but it's a completely different universe than where I live in Upstate NY.

Interesting take on the issue. Very similar to people who say they went to college at "Berkeley" as opposed to those who say they went to "Cal." If you identified the school as "Cal" you are probably conservative. If you identified it as "Berkeley" you are referencing back romantically to its liberal protest history.

Very different also if you are from "L.A." versus being from "So Cal." While not such a political bifurcation, more of an income or urban vs suburban reflection of self-identity.

Totally get that, upstate New York is beautiful and we enjoy visiting there. NYC on the other hand, work forced me there often but once I retired I vowed to never go back there again. I say we are from the Berkshires in Western Massachusetts, because otherwise people assume you are from the Boston area. Two entirety different places and lifestyles. We only go to Boston for two reasons, to visit our daughter or to get some of the best healthcare available anywhere in the world.

I asked a groundskeeper that exact same question a few months back. They sand the greens and punch those holes so that the grass on the greens develop deeper roots. Summer is when the grass is most active, makes sense to do it then.

No worries, the ones who complain the loudest about how snowbirds ruin their life, are so old they forgot they were Snowbirds along time ago :girlneener:

Just enjoy, your time in TV. You will rarely encounter in person the bashing of snowbirds. You will find many who love to tell you what village they are from (it’s the best) and give you Directions when you are lost.

Just remember it’s Hot right now, and some posters, just need to find any reason to be unhappy about pretty much anything.

Love the Minnesota State Fair. Hotdish on a stick, yummmm!

[QUOTE=tophcfa;2132269]September is upon us and it’s getting cold up here in the Berkshires. Just closed up the windows and put on a sweatshirt for the first time in a very long while. Temperature is dropping fast and is forecasted to hit 45 degrees later tonight. Time to pull the fishing boat from the lake, take the window A/C unit out for the season, and start the Villages packing pile.
Friend sent my this from NY.

I know a lot of folks snowbird but, many of us permanent folks hate when this time comes.
Sorry. TV has grown so much since we came (just 5 years ago). Roads are horrible and overcrowded with way too many folks that don't know what they are doing.
Bet people said that about us too when we first came. Now we get it.

So far we have noticed very little uptick in traffic. We visited north during the summer, returning end of August instead of first of October to catch the fall color before track down

At 0745 this morning I had to wait for approximately twenty cars to pass by in order for me to cross Morse Blvd. on my bicycle, north of 466. I travel this route nearly every day, crossing at the same spot. This is a major increase from just a week ago, and I believe it is due to an early start of snowbird season. Plus, it's pretty clear that the number of walkers on the local multimode trails has increase significantly too.

Exactly how long do you have to live in TV before you can start complaining about the newbies and snowbirds?

Don’t know the answer to your question, but the seasoned snowbirds are known to complain about newbies just like the FROGS do. And if one is a newbie snowbird, watch out!

If you like we can have a snowbird meeting asking everyone to be full time, then no more complaints. Roads, shopping, golf, overcrowding, will be like High Season Year Round. Wouldn’t that be fun:22yikes:

Snowbird complaints start the day a full timer has to wait more than 2 minutes in grocery line:clap2::1rotfl::MOJE_whot:

Then maybe you would get Costco, Trader Joe's and all the upscale restaurants that don't come here due to less business in the summer?😃

Might be getting cold up there, but rain here is getting ridiculous. Have never seen a wetter summer and I have lived in Florida over 65 year.

I think we were in a deficit until the last several weeks. My rain gage is the par 3 hole by the Pinellas Pool. The water in the pond is about 6-8 inches from reaching the green right now. A month ago it was over 2 feet lower.

Wife: It does.
