It will be interesting to see the pomp and circumstance with a coronation of a new monarch. It will be wall to wall coverage - the networks have been planning this for decades!

King Charles is 73 years old. Rather old to be starting your first job!
This sets a record for the oldest British monarch to be crowned. The record had been held by William IV who was only 64 when he became King.

Hardly his first job! King Charles worked faithfully and full-time as Prince of Wales for decades, and it really was a LOT of work. Now he may well serve as king for another twenty years. Now Prince William will be working full-time as Prince of Wales. These are not easy jobs.

Her coronation was aired on black and white TV when I was ten years old. I remember my mother watching it and shushing me, telling me it was a once in a lifetime event and she (my mother) would never see another. She was correct. It was amazing to watch, even with early 1950s TV technology.
Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing woman whom I have always admired for her dignity, dedicated service to her country and indeed the world, incredible self control, and ability to face and successfully deal with more difficult challenges than I could even imagine encountering.

I would just point out that, it may appear that the British monarchy spends a lot of money, but their entire budget is about $120 million per year. By comparison, the White House budget for staffing, travel, and security is $1.4 billion. That is about 12 times as much.

the united kingdom mourns the death of its queen as if a family member had died. The pomp and circumstance of the next ten days and the gathering of nearly all the world's leaders should surely demonstrate that it was never about time or money. The queen was the soul of the uk . She earned that by being a wartime princess, soldier and queen heroine to her people.

The Queen was an amazing woman...heck, an amazing person. She was thrust into a job she really did not want, but was born into. She served her nation with grace and distinction for longer than a lot of folks live. Whether you agree or disagree with the concept of Royalty, her dedication to her country and her countrymen is admirable.

I was at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. After dinner, my boyfriend and I made our way back to the hotel, The Queen Elizabeth, and there were crowds of people just standing around in the lobby. Tom asked me what was going on, I said I don't know but they appear to be waiting for something. So, we waited with them, I swear not a minute later the elevator door opened, the crowd parted and Queen Elizabeth walked out!!!! OMG. When the crowd parted I found myself in the front row, and she passed within a foot of where I was standing, diamond tiara and all. It was quite a thrill.

What are the odds that Charles will abdicate soon after the pomp and ceremony is over, in favor of Prince William? From what I've been reading Prince William has been being groomed by his grandmother and more or less has been calling the shots for the family for some time now.
Haven't been able to verify this...apparently some months back there was some scheduled ceremony or other and Prince Andrew (not one of the Royal's favorite sons esp. w/his connection to Jeffrey Epstein) wanted to attend. Prince William basically drew the line, saying that if Andrew attended, he wouldn't. Andrew didn't.
William is well-liked. Charles? Well...

i believe andrew and harry were secondary issues. I believe hrh charles caused her the most worry and concern as his private life subjected the monarchy itself to scorn and derision. I pray that the king will make amends to his subjects by enforcing good behavior from all the royals so that future king william will be given a fair start when he succeeds his father. I cant wait for william to elevate his mothers title the first time possible after his fathers own funeral. I think then princess diana can be at peace and a monarchy healed.

Nicest welfare queen on the planet! She accepted her charmed and nearly responsibility-free life with grace, humility, and gratitude instead of perpetually whining for more handouts and special treatment. She was the finest example of how a welfare recipient should behave, but somehow I doubt that the behavior of our welfare queens would improve if we made them all billionaires, like she was.
I really appreciated her as the totem of the greatest and most benign empire the world has ever seen. Never has there been an empire more dedicated to the improvement of the lives of its foreign subjects, and we will never see the like of it again.
But why on Earth England chooses to squander billions of its wealth to support a layabout family of welfare recipients from Germany in high style is a mystery for the ages.

It is written that, "
Between 1690 and 1807, an estimated 6 million enslaved Africans were transported from west Africa to the Americas on British or Anglo-American ships. The slave trade was protected by the royal family and parliament.
It is difficult to estimate just how much of the current royal family’s wealth is owed to slavery, but it is understood that the profits of the slave trade funded the Treasury, as well as Britain’s industries, buildings, railways, roads and parks.
According to Prof Corinne Fowler, an academic at the University of Leicester who specialises in Britain’s colonial legacies, the royal family “has an opportunity to show leadership by acknowledging its involvement, making a formal apology and asking openly and humbly what the family can do to begin to repair the damage”, and a first step to moving on “might be to decide that the Queen should no longer be ceremonial head of state”.

So history is often ugly. That is nothing new. At someone's funeral and a period of mourning is not the appropriate time to bring it up. At this time, "if you can't say something nice", then, for the sake of decency and courtesy, say nothing at all.

I was also ten years old at the time of Queen Elizabeth's coronation and was so intrigued that a Canadian relative dubbed me an 'honorary Canadian.' Little did we know that Canada would subsequently change its citizenship laws, and I am now Canadian (dual with US).
History will sort out—as it invariably does—the reality of every era of human existence. Now is not the time to do so. I would not dignify some of the posts in this thread with a response. Her public life was as manabouttown describes it. Rest in peace....

Dido’s to what you said. I heard on the news that some A-hole said they wish she died in a lot of pain. Who would say this about anybody. By the way it was a guy that said it. It’s not a comment that they keep playing. God Bless Queen Elizabeth!

When someone can't understand or accept, always easier to take shots and demean.....the arrogance of the human race.
What an angry thing to say!
What's to understand about Monarchy? The toughest thief on a battlefield 3000 years ago claims everyone else's property for his own, and the result in modern times is a family with no power, responsibility, or usefulness who is maintained in unimaginable wealth in-perpetuity because of "tradition".
I'm sorry, but that's just dumb. It's even dumber in England's case, because the Royal family is German, who even had to change their name to "Windsor" during WW1 because they were at war with Germany. Why England didn't just end the farce in the 1800's when the English royal line basically went extinct and they had to hand the crown to a German princess (Queen Mary) is a mystery for the ages.
But I have nothing but respect for the late Queen Elizabeth. She accepted her insane good fortune with grace and humility and set an example for how to accept accidental wealth that millions of undeserving heirs everywhere should learn from.

As a great man once said, "The well of the stupidity of the human race has never been plumbed".
Well, I'd agree with your post except the actual facts show that the Monarchy is a net POSITIVE cash infusion to the country...
The exact $$$ was discussed earlier in this thread...

The Royal family gets paid $125 MILLION dollars per year by private and public money. What exactly is the scope of 'work' that they do to justify sapping their taxpayers so much??
And they made that slave trade illegal LOOOONG before we did it here in the states...

Kenswing, there could of been a female that said that but this was a male radio talk show host, Dennis Prager! Make no difference where we heard it, it was still a terrible thing to say. Bet they would say this about an American leader, that person must have a lot hate for anybody.

That was a different quote. This is the one Kenswing referred to.

Prager said no such thing, unless he was quoting that professor...
This is what he said on his podcast... "Queen Elizabeth is dead at 96. She was a symbol of national unity in Great Britain and the personification of dignity and grace… Not suprisingly, those on the radical left are celebrating her death, some with vicious tweets..."

That is kind of like blaming a US President in 2022 for the taking of the culture/land/languages of the various Native American tribes that occurred from the 1600s through late 1900s.

True. It is, imho, illogical and ridiculous to be angry at someone for things that happened long before they were born. It is also illogical, imho, to judge past societies buy todays standards. Compare, yes. Judge, no.
If, for example, apologies were expected by any group that ever engaged in the practice of slavery, I doubt that any group, tribe or nation in the world would be exempt.
I think slavery is wrong, but it was common in ancient times, recent times and still (sadly) exists in some places.
I only know the late Queen by her public persona. May God bless her!

Slavery was very common. The army that lost the war would often become slaves. Deuteronomy 20 ERV - Rules for War - “When you go out to - Bible Gateway (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy%2020&version=ERV)

While the antithesis of 'decency/grace/class' has been exhibited by a number of the usual suspects here, and while not a surprise - is still a shame.
May you RIP remarkable lady.
