Hi
I read awhile ago that there was a new Chinese restaurant opening next to Giovanni’s in the Southern at Trace plaza.
And then… I read on Nextdoor somewhere that it wasn’t happening.
Anyone have info? We really need a good Chinese restaurant!
Thanks

Not open yet but has a lot of promise. Understand it is being run by former operators of Koyame which we frequented a lot

I remember joking some years back that because of the obvious sameness in Chinese restaurants (especially buffets) it was obvious that they all got their food from the same truck. It was meant as a joke--until one day I actually saw the truck!

I enjoy going to Chinese restaurants but my expectations are never that great. The food is good--and plentiful--and cheap--and (usually) hot, and the service is usually much quicker than in other restaurants. I have only gone to two that I thought were exceptional: one in a southern suburb of Minneapolis that had a "dim sum day" which was great though the lines were pretty long. The other one was a small restaurant in Duluth, MN: Chef Yee's, run by a couple Alan and Amy Yee. Everything from scratch: the wor wonton soup was exceptional and usually served as an appetizer, followed by any number of excellent main dishes, all prepared on-site and served piping hot. The restaurant is closed now: Alan and Amy headed to more fertile grounds in I believe Oregon. Duluth lost one of their very few really good restaurants when they left.

How can you not talk about the Nan-Kin in Downtown Mpls....

One other difference is the Chow Mein, especially the noodles soft instead of crunchy...

If some entrepreneur would open a superior Chinese restaurant like many we have up north it would be a gold mine. It seems to me here in the south Chinese is relegated to almost a fast food cheesiness. A classy venue with great food would be a boon both to the Villages and to those that might make this so.

Is it really a north/south thing or is it more a matter of Villagers being unwilling to pay for good food and way too many like their food bland? I think you might find what you like in a city such as Orlando or Tampa, where I’ve found some great restaurants.

There is always Yummy house in Ocala.

Have you seen the prices at Yummy House? Prices run around $9.95 for soups and the average price for entrees is about $15.00. For the entrees, I will admit that the portions are quite large - each one will serve two. Imagine a party of 4 only ordering 2 entrees. Sort of takes away the idea of sampling different dishes. However, they seem to have a never ending supply of of take out boxes. By the way, if that party of four each ordered their own entrée, they would be given a check totaling about $75.

One other thing - how do two people share a large bowl of soup. They had better bring it with a ladle and two small bowls.

Offsetting the above is that the food is very good. But Yummy House is not P.F. Chang's

My wife loves their egg drop soup so she bought the large size and came home with large container for the next few days. It is not cheap but very good and by 1 pm last time long wait to get n.

Better than pf changs IMHO.

The reason it was so busy by 1pm is because you (we) went on a Sunday when they serve Dim Sum.

Except for PF Changes lettuce wraps, Yummy house is better.

Manhattan and Queens Chinatowns are great for American Chinese. We went to a restaurant in Queens Chinatown where Chinese people eat. Servers only speak Chinese so our friends who only speak Chinese ordered for us. It was dim sum and among the dishes they served a small bird. My husband asked what it was and they kept pointing out the window. We figured it out. It was pigeon. The also served chicken feet and an exotic soup with hard boiled eggs, a whole fish with the head and some other exotic dishes. Needless to say, being a boring American, I ate the white rice, smiled and left hungry.. My favorite here is Koyame.

You are lucky. You got to experience real Chinese food. We had a similar experience with friends who moved to the United States from China. We tried everything and it was wonderful, except for the chicken feet. I thought they meant chicken leg and when I popped it in my mouth got stabbed by the claws. There is an art to enjoying certain items. We went back several times and loved it.

Can’t wait for it to open! Meanwhile, have you ever eaten at Pho Sai Gon? It’s Vietnamese but they also serve several traditional Chinese dishes. Excellent food! Service can be spotty when they get busy but it is always very friendly. You need a car or LSV to get there but it’s not far to drive if you live near Southern Trace.

Do enjoy many Chinese dishes but there are some they know not to my taste and will order many dishes for the table and explain what each one is.

I think they do have some pics and some descriptions but I know what you mean! I have the take out menu and it even has pics so they have improved in that regard. Usually but not always they have local servers who are happy to help with menu choices.

the only one here has some white linens, and the trouble otherwise is 95% of us complain about prices always.

Years ago we went to Cocoa beach and drove southerly and found ONE real nice place. the wonton soup had sliced pork, lots of vegetables and great wontons. You won't find that here at all.

I am used to NYC Chinese . chow mein dishes ARE vegetables - not noodles. .

When customers balk at $15 for an entree, and $75 total for four people, is there any wonder why higher end restaurants are in the minority in The Villages?
Seems pile it high, and sell it cheap is the restaurant of choice for majority.

Well, Koyame was never a destination restaurant for us since the ambiance is not much. We have eaten there a number of times but mostly it has been a great place for takeout. I have gotten a takeout twice now since the new ownership took over. It has been just as good as before. Time will tell if it continues. We are very interested in what the new Kung Fu Chef restaurant will be like by previous Koyame owners.

Chinese food tends to be different everywhere. When you say "up north" I assume that you're talking about your home town. I'm from Boston and the first time I went to NYC I didn't like the Chinese food because it was different from what I was used to.

I've since eaten Chinese food in several different places including Asia and can tell you that it's different in California than it is in Boston, New York and Chicago. I don't know that the food here is bad, it's simply different than what any of us had at home.

This thread has drifted a bit from the original question, does anyone know if Koyame is still expected to open in Southern Trace?

We’ve always enjoyed Koyame but it was just a little too far and then Covid eliminated eating in for a couple of years. While we buy lunch from China Gourmet III in Colony on occasion, it’s not quite as good as Koyame imho. I worked a few blocks from NY’s Chinatown, so that’s what I’m used to. It was a once a week treat for me. I also understand that people’s taste for ethnic food is usually based on what they’re used to. I had an Italian friend in Pikesville MD. who made lasagna with cottage cheese, and a Polish friend who thought it was delicious. I couldn’t eat it!

So true. And not just for Chinese food but for Asian food in general. Most of it seems to be dumbed down to fit American tastes.

Good example: Thai food. If you eat the real deal in Thailand, then what you get here seems a pale shadow in comparison. Authentic Thai food is robust, delicious and (at times) pungent, which might take a little getting used to. I particularly enjoy eating Thai street food: Just be sure to A) go early in the day, and B) make sure that the little girl with the fan is doing her job and keeping the flies away.

Recently had a meal at PF Chang’s in Winter Park. Prices, service and food excellent in my book. Now, I will admit up front, that Wife and I (generally speaking) are easy to please. That said, the restaurant manager came over to our table and introduced himself. During the conversation he said that he understood that The Villages was on the “companies radar”. IMHO a similar restaurant would do well in The Villages.

So Pad Thai is not authentic?
Not the stuff served in most "Thai" American restaurants. It's greasy noodle glop compared to the real deal.

Authentic Padt Thai is made with Tamarind paste, not tamarind sauce or vinegar (as much of it seems to be here). Also with salted sun-dried shrimp and tofu. Much of the stuff served at Thai restaurants over here are made with peanut butter; in Thailand it always includes dry roasted peanuts. One thing authentic Padt Thai includes is radish pickle. Heavy on the fish sauce. And Thai chili pepper flakes, NOT Sriracha sauce.

I'm not saying the real thing doesn't exist over here. If you've found the real thing, you're lucky. But from my experience eating in Thai restaurants I've not experienced it. Several of our friends have enjoyed Padt Thai in Thai restaurants, but after eating the Padt Thai that my wife (Thai) cooks, they cannot believe the difference.

The P.F. Chang’s in Orlando is good.
Went to the one in Tampa and it was disappointing.

We’ve always enjoyed the PF Chang’s in White Plains NY, and assumed wrongly that all PF C’s would be equally as good. The PF C in Columbia MD was a real disappointment. So I’m not surprised to hear that Tampa’s was also disappointing.

When I was in grad school, a friendly Chinese student lived across the hall from me. He invited us to dinner from time to time and served delicious food. He said his parents ran a Chinese central kitchen in NYC and they would package up dry ingredients and send them to him in Buffalo. The aromas were so so good on those days.

IMHO, PF Changs would do a fantastic business in The Villages. I'm surprised they have not already set up business here.

They were supposed to open one where Harvest is in Brownwood.
Backed out due to Covid (?) or some other reason.

That does not bode well for the restaurant to open here.

If you get to Orlando, I highly recommend Lam's Garden for authentic Chinese food. A friend of mine from China, who moved here 10 years ago, told me about this place. My wife and I stopped there on the way to the airport a week ago and it was fantastic.

I've been settling for "edible" Chinese food ever since my beloved Far East Restaurant closed down in New Haven a few decades ago. I've since learned, that this location had a history of "Far East" restaurants at it, new managements came and went and re-incorporated it with the same name. It was an amazing location, just two blocks past the main downtown area, with their own (small) parking lot behind the building. If you were going to a show at the Shubert this was a hot-spot for dinner before the show. They had an indoor koi pond up against the massive front window, and everyone ate with chopsticks. I always got the Lobster Cantonese and mom would help me pull the lobster meat out of the shell.

There was also Blessings Restaurant. My parents liked that one but I was already in college in Boston by that time so I never experienced it.

These were serious sit-down restaurants, people didn't really "do" take-out there. There was no counter you could wait at for your bag of take-out containers (though they prepared them for you if you had leftovers from your sit down meal). Tea came with the meal, and so did a single small scoop of coconut ice cream with a fortune cookie resting atop the scoop for dessert.

Here, I go to Koyame. It's okay. And to me, "okay" means "tolerable" and better than anything else I've been to so far down here.

I still go back to Tampa ( where I moved from) for Chinese food.

My favorite in NYC was the Shun Lee Palace on E. 55th.
