View Full Version : Multimodal paths are 2 lanes (not three)

Whether I am on a bike or a cart, when I pass someone moving in the same direction (walkers or bikers), I move way left to give significant clearance.

You are approaching us from the rear in your cart. I must be passing too slowly for you, as you insist on passing both me and the person I am passing, even if it means going on the grass.

Would you do this on a 2 lane roadway? FFS! be patient!

I drive a car, drive a golf cart and ride a bike. The original poster always thinks they are right.
When passing another vehicle it is the responsibility of the one doing the passing to be sure there is enough room to do it safely.

Did I read this post correctly? It seems that it states that there are times when a person is passing another cart, cycle, or pedestrian on a MMP that someone else "passes the passer". That would be insane. I've lived here 9 years and have almost 30,000 miles on my golf cart, and I've never seen that (and hope I never will)

We walk, bike, and golf cart on the MMP. My question is “what’s the hurry”? We had a cart pass our bikes on a blind curve with carts coming the other way. I’m frequently amazed at how stupid some people are.

Actually, that's 2 statements in one. Passing on a blind curve is indeed "stupid". "What's the hurry", well, neither of us know, there could be a legitimate reason.

Patience (courtesy, responsibility, safety) are not compatible with the golf cart drivers who are always in a hurry to get somewhere (like where they can get their next drink)!

There are so many ****ty golf cart drivers here that only care about themselves it is silly. They only care about getting their ass to the golf course for T time. If they got out 15 minutes earlier... All about them. These are the "villagers" the villages don't need.

There are the ones that can't seem to leave early enough to make their tee time. Funny you find they end up at the same course you're playing and you left in plenty of time. They probably used to race to work too.

I rarely pass anyone and am usually the one being passed. Once I see them coming up behind me ( my cart only goes 21 at top speed) I slow down and let them pass me. Same when I’m on my bike. Now, on the other hand, I sometimes do take my cart to Publix for groceries and sometimes those are frozen items and I am actually in a hurry to get home but am stuck behind A.) 2 bikers who wont move over to let me pass or B) a golf cart out for a sight seeing ride at 10 MPH and again, won’t let me pass. So sometimes there are reasons you just want to do the speed limit of 20 MPH. And again, when I don’t I happily slow down to let others pass me.

I don’t understand, “won’t let me pass”. Are you saying they won’t give you room, riding or driving in the middle of the path? If not, there are plenty of places to pass safely.

Don’t agree, if someone wants to pass me they can speed up. How about when you are on the highway and someone is coming down the entrance ramp, do you slow down so they can enter without changing their speed?

Probably doesn't happen often but I've experienced it. Walking along the MMP, recumbent bike coming towards me moved over to give me space, and golf cart overtaking the bike chose to pass at the same time. It was a little tight.

How slow a driver are you? Every day I come across golf cart drivers who are doing 15-16-17 miles an hour. My golf can do maybe 22 miles an hour. Do you know how long it takes to pass someone with only a 4 mile an hour speed advantage? Do you not see that golf cart behind you wants to pass? So what is the problem with you slowing down and pulling over to let them by? GEEZ!!!!!:censored:

You state the speed difference is 4 mph, so you are telling them that they should slow down and pull over for your consideration. You could slow down for the minute or three till you get to a place where you could safely pass, for their consideration. Either way, someone is going to be momentarily inconvenienced, why do you insist it must be someone, anyone other than you? Courtesy goes both ways.

If you slow down a few miles an hour more, that difference is now 5-7 mph. That will make it easier and safer for you to be passed, since you will not have to "pull over" and no one will be inconvenienced... Unless of course, you actually think that lifting your foot a millimeter off of the "go pedal" for 15-20 seconds is some sort of major inconvenience...

Me? I call it being courteous to the drivers around me. Just like I'll slow down a bit to let someone merge onto a highway, since they have a very limited amount of time to make the merge and it doesn't effect me in any way whatsoever... The people who speed up to "show them who's boss" are the ones who cause accidents...

Just trying to see it from the other point of view.
So other driver pulls up and, being impatient, is instantly frustrated and annoyed because they had to slow 2 to 4 mph and is now sitting on my tail. If I pull my foot back to slow, they will have to slow and possibly even hit the brakes to avoid hitting me? Now they are really pi$$ed off and, in their mind, its my fault. Isn't it possible that they could see they were slowly gaining on the cart ahead and adjusted their speed to match the lead vehicle? That would be considerate, safe and even reasonable, imho.
You can spin the narrative to make one or the other look bad. Caution, courtesy and consideration go both ways.

The slow person slows further for 30 seconds which increases the speed difference and allows for time to pass quickly. It appears in your world slowing down for 3 minutes on the hope there will be a place to pass down the road is the same thing.

I think this thread was primarily discussing carts passing on an MMP. If you want to drive slow on a multi-lane highway, just stay in the right lane and enjoy yourself (unless there is a minimum speed posted that you can't keep up with), no need to slow down further. If it is a single lane road and you are leading a parade of 30 cars, either speed up or pull over and let everyone pass.

Yeah, I have done that several times. We lived in the flatland part of Virginia but we loved to vacation in West Virginia where some of the 2-lane roads are very tricky. The locals were used to the roads and would drive much faster than us, so we would often pull over and let them pass.

No significance to the number of poles, simply trying to narrow the pathway and draw attention.

North of 44 most paths are open to carts, bicycles, and pedestrians. Occasionally a path might be closed to carts and the pole will have wording to that effect. (Lake Sumter near Winn Dixie for example)

South of 44 many of the paths are bicycle and pedestrian only (no carts). There *might* be a correlation between what is allowed and the number of poles but it would be better to look for a sign or marking on the pole.

Generally, paths that are restricted to bicycles and pedestrians only have more than 1 post and a sign, to prevent carts from entering. Of course, regular MMPs have 1 post to keep cars and trucks out----and we all know how well that works:1rotfl::1rotfl::1rotfl:
