Online banking shows two recent gas purchases on my debit card which I did not make. One showing Ocala and the other in Tampa totaling about $300.00. Apparently my card got hacked most likely at a gas station in TV. Anyone else with similar experiences?

I know awhile back there was a skimming problem at the Marathon station at Lake Deaton Plaza. That was a couple months ago though. A word of advice. NEVER use a debit card to get gas. At least with a credit card you have some protection against fraudulent charges. Much harder to straighten out with a debit card.

Hopefully, your bank will reimburse you for the money you lost. But, if you had used a credit card instead of a debit card, they would have no choice. It would be mandated by Federal law. Always use a credit card.

I never use my debit card for anything other than getting money at the bank. Burned before.

Exactly. Have been warned to use them only at an ATM or at the bank.

Never understood why people insist on using debit cards when a CC is so much better offering more protection

Bought $50 Marathon gas card (Publix - buy $50 of groceries and get $50 gas card for $40). I used the Marathon cards for golf cart gas, so this one sat for quit a while as I had another card in the golf cart. When I went to use the new card it I had a few $'s on it. A hacker had mostly cleaned it out. I thought I was being smart and not using credit card or debit card at the pump. No recourse or reimbursement. My tough luck.
I'm going back to credit card. The Publix $50 for $40 doesn't look like that good of a deal now.

If you regularly use the same gas station in TV, it would be helpful to know where your debit card was likely hacked.

This used to happen to me when I used my debit card. I finally learned that using an Amex card it never happens.

Why insert the card?? Most pumps have the tap feature. Can’t hack that.

We were hacked twice on a single trip from NY to FL. The police told us that hackers can secretly put a transmitter in the gas pump to broadcast your card information to a receiver in a nearby car. This information is usually immediately sold or used to purchase goods on your account.
The police also told us that the hackers will often run a bogus charge through the card (i.e. $1) to verify that the card is active before using it. The better cards (e.g. AMEX) will watch for these atypical charges, temporarily suspend the card and immediately call you on your cell phone. If the charge is fake, they permanently suspend the card and deliver a new card to you using overnight mail.
Hacking certainly isn't limited to gas stations. Anyone with a camera (e.g. waiter in a restaurant) can take a picture of your card and immediately begin using it.
Your best protection is to use a credit card (obligated to refund bogus charges), or better yet, cash. If you do use a card, never let it out of your sight.

I had my debit card locked by the bank so it can only be used as an ATM card. I have never used a card as a debit card, only credit cards……more safety

No
My credit card cannot be used at any gas station without me getting an immediated text alert. For that matter any charge creates an alert.
Check and see if your credit card provider has this service. If not get a more secure card.

I saw someone post about getting their debit card hacked at the new 7-11 on Powell rd last week. Hopefully everyone sees posts like these and stops using their debit cards at the pumps.

I had a credit card hacked at that location a couple of years ago. AMEX took care of the matter and sent me a new card. Don't go there anymore.

Definitely make a report with your bank. There are fraud protections for debit cards that you'll want to take advantage of.
It's difficult to know where your information was stolen (likely skimmed and not hacked). Just because the charges appeared recently doesn't mean the information was stolen recently. The gas station may have been the source of the problem but unless they actually found the skimming device it's just a guess.
I've not had any problems here in Florida. I had some problems in Md some years ago but I changed credit card providers and have had no issues since.

Tap and pay, get alerts for all purchases...use pumps by the store, less likely to be skimmed.

As people said, never use a debit card at a gas station. I have taken it a step further, after getting my credit card compromised at a gas station, and having to change everything online to new card number I got a 3rd card. I now have a main card, a debit card, and a card strictly for gas stations and restaurants.... which the lowest possible credit line. That way, if someone gets it, they 1. Don't get much with it and 2. I don't have to change anything online..... win win. I also set it up that I get a text whenever anything is charged on my cards, so I know if a bad guy got it.

Better yet, use the Walmart or Sam’s app on your phone for quick touch-less gas dispensing. It can be set to charge and credit card. Walmart gives you 3cents off per gallon if you use the app.

Get an Apple Credit Card. There are no numbers on it. You get cash back on purchases. It also randomly changes the three digit code. You can just add the card to your wallet….and just tap your phone for in store purchases. Don’t even need to take the card out…or carry it. Win Winnnnn

Not all gas stations and retail outlets have the technology to accommodate that.
I have google pay, and BJ's gas station doesn't have that technology. So I have to insert my actual credit card. I believe CVS also doesn't have that technology, and many restaurants don't have it either.
As for debit cards - I haven't had one in decades. I see no need for one. I have an ATM card that -cannot- be used to make purchases anywhere. It can ONLY be used at ATM machines or at the bank. If I need money, I either ask my husband for some or I go to the actual bank and withdraw the money. I don't use my ATM card at ATMs. I only use it as identification at the teller's window at the bank.

You can ask your bank to remove the debit capability from your account. Then the debit card will only function as an ATM card. We have done that at both of our banks. We only use credit cards.

We had a similar problem in Virginia. Even using a credit card, it's a hassle because you have to get new cards with new numbers. In our case, we were using non-local gas stations.

Had similar issue with Credit Card in northern Virginia. Someone ran up about $400 at three businesses on credit card in 2 days before card was frozen; card company covered. Reported to local police who told me it was a waste on time.
About a month or two later, got a call from FBI agent who relayed the following information as it related to my case: my card information was obtained from Hacked credit card reader at drive-through car wash, information sent to China where forged cards were manufactured and sent back to local area where information obtained, then cards sold to local gangs.
An ABC store was one of the businesses where fake card were used and they were able to get pictures of user and tracked them down.
Not sure if FBI normally gets this involved. I think it helped that I lived near FBI Academy and this might have been a training exercise.

Never use a debit card. No reason to even have one except for use at the bank that issued it. Credit cards have rebates and protect you.
