I can’t imagine scammers wasting their time here. It’s obvious we didn’t sustain any damage. But I guess you never know. Older folks do seem to be easier targets.

Good to know. I retired 15 years ago and the States I Worked in and the Companys I worked for always required Insurance. If being Insured since 1966 makes me disreputable. So Be It. I still will not let an uninsured Contractor work on my house. Len

Last year a tornado went through Cochran, GA, where my daughter lives, and knocked down three pine trees, he of which fell partly on her bedroom, damaging the roof. Two guys showed up from somewhere the next day and offered to cut and remove the trees. For $17,000! This took two guys one hard day of work. They left the stumps and roots sticking out of the ground. But when a tree is on your roof and there are many like you, do you say no?

Ten years ago a girlfriend of mine in New Jersey get a foot of water in her finished basement after a big storm and a failed sump pump. I worked for two days removing water and cutting up and carrying wet carpet. Horrible work! Two guys from Georgia showed up in a big truck and offered to pull out the rest of the flooring and the drywall for $37,000. They worked hard for two days, did the work, and left a mountain of debris on the driveway in front of the garage.

I’m in awe of guys who can work that hard, but it’s definitely whatever the market will bear, and if you won’t pay, there is someone down the street who will.

Sad thing is a lot of people do give maintenance men full payment up front, then they never see them again. Actually I never give a maintenance company any money until it’s done & done the way you want. But use your good judgement!

There were lots of quality, out-of-town, contractors who helped after Irma.
A number of them "knocked on the doors" offering their help/services.
There were not and are not enough local contractors to respond to major event.
Yes, be careful and be smart..............but you need to do that with local contractors.

Better yet, never answer the door unless you know someone is coming. That's how I got robbed in NY. I haven't opened my front door since 1991!

I wouldn't trust someone that I didn't contact to check my roof - they might sabotage it.
