I received a 47 page form to complete and return to "DIRECTOR, U.S. CENSUS BUREAU , (in Jeffersonville, IN, of all places.) I have never had such a "demand" before regarding a census, and consider this to be extremely suspect of being an attempt to obtain very private, financial information that I do not wish to share. I called the phone number the form provided to answer any questions concerning privacy, spoke with a female named "Sandra", and expressed my concerns. She did not help in any way before terminating our call by calling me a "stupid man", and hanging up. Very unprofessional!
Just wondering if any others here have received such a strange request from the "U.S. Census Bureau". I am tempted to shred it and forget it in this era of SCAMS. Would appreciate your comments, please. --Thank you.

I do know that some percentage of census forms asks lots of personal question but no idea if this one is legit or not.
Find the main number in DC of census bureau and ask them.

Scam, most likely. The last census was in 2020 and they're held every 10 years so it's unlikely that data would be requested at this point in time.
Toss it. I certainly would.

Years ago when I lived in NJ, I received a detailed census form. It was NOT a 47 page form (maybe 10 or 12 pages), and it arrived while a census was known to be in progress. I was aware that such detailed forms were being sent out to a percent of the population, and the return address matched that of the shorter form others I knew were completing. I would recommend that you independently find a contact number for the US Census bureau and ask them if they are conducting such a census at this time and at least let them know there might be a scam going on.
Note: I chose to only answer 3 or 4 questions and mailed it back. I did subsequently have a census person with ID show up at my door indicating that I did not complete the form "as required". I informed that person that I answered all that I intended to answer and that the rest of the form asked what I felt were intrusive questions, especially since I was not receiving public assistance. I suggested that while the post office had never lost or misdirected a piece of mail in it's entire history, I was not looking to be the first to have that fully completed document with such detailed information lost (yes I was sarcastic). You are not required to answer all of the questions on a census, but what you do answer must be truthful. Should you choose to answer and lie, then you are subject to any penalties that can be imposed, be they fines and/or jail time.

spoke with a female named "Sandra", and expressed my concerns. She did not help in any way before terminating our call by calling me a "stupid man", and hanging up. There are a lot easier ways to scam someone than to do it by creating a 40+ page questionnaire!!! :D Likely it's legit and if she really called you a "stupid man" after stupidly giving you her name, I'd try hard to find out where she was located and report her as call are likely recorded. Of course your explanation of the conversation that led to the alleged name calling is only one side of the story.

In the FAQ section about that survey you are informed your participation is required, not optional and that you must honestly answer
OP:
Please read the detailed information posted earlier. The belief someone else expressed about surveys from the US Census Bureau only every 10 years is false. Also, if you received the annual American Community Survey, the website of the US Census Bureau says this on the FAQ page:
“If your address was selected for the American Community Survey, you are legally obligated to answer all the questions, as accurately as you can. The relevant laws are Title 18 U.S.C Section 3571 and Section 3559, which amends Title 13 U.S.C. Section 221.”
Answering a survey you received from the Census Bureau is similar to jury duty. It is crucial to make things work and a duty to participate if selected.
Also, you may be able to submit your survey responses online rather than on paper. Go to the webpage of the US Census Bureau for your particular survey form to check.

Those were my thoughts, too.
I did look it up. If one is willing to do it, good to see there’s different ways of answering it besides by mail. The site says it helps the government save money. Ha! I believe those answers can be gotten, probably cheaper, that should already be out there, through the housing market, businesses, etc.etc.

Just looked online and the American community surgery form is 20 pages long. You state what you received was 47 pages. Could you share the NAME of the form you received?
https://www2.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/methodology/questionnaires/2022/quest22.pdf
I read the form in entirety and as one of the minority in this country that actually pays federal taxes and support the majority who do NOT pay federal taxes, I would NOT fill out this form.
Given how extremely personal and intrusive this form is I can’t imagine anyone; rich or poor, intelligent or ignorant, choosing to fill this form out completely, accurately and truthfully…then popping it into our incompetent and corrupt postal system. I would imagine the average scammer, corrupt postal worker etc know what these clearly marked and unique envelopes look like and are a great source of data for potential ne’er-do-wells.
This means whatever census data we receive is highly likely for to bear no resemblance to our current American socioeconomic reality and therefore is a useless exercise in bureaucracy.
Good grief.

I don't care if the request is legitimate or not. I would NOT answer any sensitive questions. In this day of never-ending phishing scams the government should know better than to expect US citizens to comply with such request.
I do not respond to anyone trying to get personal information - period. I don't care if it is actually the census personnel. You do not have to answer any of this.

Amen. I've never been a fan of Big Brother.
The original census was a headcount. It has since mushroomed into a data-gathering monstrosity that is used extensively for social engineering, pet projects and pork purchases as well as the more legitimate reasons such as congressional district apportionment, issues related to public education, etc. I've made it a point to answer ONLY what I think the government needs to know about me: name, address, DOB, things like that.
Check out the census form from 100 years ago. Two pages. From the looks of it, not two full pages at all; more like two sides of a postcard. https://www.archives.gov/files/research/genealogy/charts-forms/1920-census.pdf
Compare that to today. Easy to see why so many people see the current system as so intrusive.

I got one of these in Georgia a few years back that was a bunch of pages. I ignored the first one and then got a second notice with a new survey. I answered some of the basic questions of publicly found information such as age(not date of birth), race, gender, years of employment, marital status, residency questions such as how long in one place, etc. I would not answer anything about income, personal finances, or identifying data such as date of birth, etc. After returning it, I got phone calls, then a visit from a census employee to try and get me to answer the rest of the questions in person that I was uncomfortable sending in the mail. I still refused the additional information and they had the same person come back two or three times, then a supervisor. On the supervisor visit, I got much more direct and told them to stop visiting me. They stopped after that visit. I would answer what you feel is comfortable to you and send it back once you verify that it is truly the census bureau.

The national average of census forms returned was about 60% for the 2020 census. That says nothing about how complete the forms were, just that they were received. My bet is that a significant percentage of those returned forms included unanswered questions that the recipient deemed intrusive. I know mine did.

The form is indeed 48 pages long. Read the next to last page and you can see that pages 20-47 have been removed because they are duplicate questions of other pages asking for the same information about other than the head of the household.

The Census is more than the every 10 year head count. They continuously collect a wide variety of data needed for by various agencies and Congress. And federal agencies are located all over the US, not just DC. Fill out what you’re comfortable with and leave some answers blank of you wish.

Thanks, I appreciate all the comments and helpful advice. The form honestly was 47 pages and requests very personal information. I will pursue verification and If legitimate, decide if being subjected to "follow-ups" is what I want, or not. Very disappointing to know if our government has actually adopted intimidation as part of their mode of operation. I understand the original purpose of census taking and using population as a means of determining how many politicians we need to serve us, but this is a new low point with "Big Brother" tactics for the U.S.A. I am as patriotic as anyone, but why pose financial questions when records of real estate transactions, taxes, income, etc. already exist?

Except, you're wrong (as are several others who posted this evening without reading the rest of the thread).
The US Census bureau has more than one Census; it has a few. One is the Population and Housing Census, which is sent once every 10 years.
Another is the Economic Census, which is sent every five years, and not to every household.

I wouldn't answer any survey with any personal questions. And, I definitely wouldn't play along with the government and answer any questions about ethnicity, gender, etc. Just fill in, "human.". They already have too much personal info.

I would toss it even if it was legitimate.
Feel free to toss, which I did, but the mailings continued with strong wording until I complied. Doing the research, my mailing appeared legitimate.

It is probably the American Community Survey which seems to be run non stop by the census bureau. I mean you do have to justify this government entity somehow the years the real census is not taking place.
If you read the instructions, it says that you can just skip any question you don't want to answer. I believe it also says you can just opt not to do it. That is what I did with 90% of the questions the first time they sent it to me.
The second time, a few years later, I just threw it in the garbage. After awhile you will start receiving phone calls asking about your progress and if you have any questions. I just stopped answering them. Then they had people coming to my door and since I was away most of the time, I would find notices on my door. I just ignored them. Then, finally, I was home and somebody came to the door asking about it. I just told them I was not going to fill it out. She then said "So, you are refusing to participate?" I said "Yes" . She then turned around and walked away and I have never heard another thing about it. That was in 2018 or 2019.

there is enough info on all of us in public record. they have our social, addresses & everything else they need to know about citizens already on file. the census has become a tool for redistricting, i've seen it happen

Strong wording. Lol. Until they put me behind bars they get two middle digits. Not happening. Need to stop fearing zealous paper pushers. All talk, little action

The only information you are required to give are names and ages of all those living in the household. You are not required to participate in the "long form" even if you receive it. During the 2000 census we were given the long form, if the form is legitimate, it will state right on the form the required information as well as the statue that requires it. You can google the statue and verify that it's only names and ages of those living at the address.

You are referring to ONE type of Census. As I already stated, there are more than one. If you scroll up you'll see a hyperlink to the actual Census Bureau, which details what kinds of Census surveys there are, how often they're sent, what they do with the information, who gets them, etc. etc. etc.

I was a team leader for the 2010 census. Do I believe the census was 100% accurate? No, why? You can't get every house in the US, some refuse to answer, others lie on it (I don't understand why). Some of the team leaders encouraged their people to fill in forms for people they couldn't find. (I found out that their boss got some kind of bonus.
I did the best I could to get accurate numbers.

Just looked online and the American community surgery form is 20 pages long. You state what you received was 47 pages. Could you share the NAME of the form you received?

Good grief.
You mean the majority who barely make enough money to survive because the minimum wage is low or corporations who are making record profits don't pay a living wage?

Pretty much sums up the attitude of a lot of Americans, and more all the time.
On a (somewhat) related note, In September 2020 Minnesota Dept. of Health instituted a program called "Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER)" where health dept. employees showed up at homes unannounced, mainly in the MSP metro area but in rural areas as well, to ask families about their COVID vaccination status and offer to do testing. To say that they received a cool response is an understatement. MDH of course put the best possible spin on it, but there were reports of doors slammed in faces, workers being asked to leave the premises in words that would get one banned here, and in some instances, armed confrontation of workers. The CASPER program was ended soon after it started--a wise move, in my opinion.
Most Americans are not sheep.

FYI. You can delete everything in a post except 3 characters. Some people use "///" to indicate a deleted post.

That’s right if a survey company wanted you to do a survey they would of never called you stupid. Right there that should of told you that this scammer was stupid. Any scammer would of never called anybody names that was a dead give away that they were stupid!
