Removal or resetting of golf cart govenor?

Is it possible to remove the speed govenor on a golf cart or reset it to a higher speed? If so, where would I go to have that done? Thanks!:confused:

No legitimate company will do as you ask. They would get a heavy fine. Maybe you can find some guy in your neighborhood who can do that, but be prepared to pay a HUGE fine when the cops stop you. If your problem is simply a cart that is going way too slow, take it in to be repaired or call in one of the companies like Ken Spano to see what the problem is.

Ditto on that. You can't even get insurance coverage if you alter it. They will sell you a policy, but if it is found to have been altered they will not cover you in an accident.

I bought mine second hand a few weeks ago and according to my GPS it will go 26 MPH. The guy showed me where to adjust it. Very easy. I would find a GPS and see your actual speed. Somebody posted the name of a guy on this forum who installs speedometers. I might have it done too, as a GPS can be a pain in the neck.

its a simple adjustment. you need a wrench and flat screwdriver. these people giving you doom and gloom dont really know what they are dealing with. its a small engine with a simple adjustment. find a neighbor that is handy around the house and he can do it after looking at it.

red, your answer may be too simplistic, every manufacturer is different and gas vs electric is different, many can not be adjusted without specialized tools/equipment. as others have said if you set the speed above the golf cart limit of 20 mph you may void your insurance and be liable for a criminal infraction...gn

i was assuming she has gas engine. not electric. im not condoning speeding. but an adjustment can help if a quick spurt of speed in necessary as well as climbing the bridge over 441.

There is no governor on an electric cart, so it is not quite that simple. BTW, 16 MPH is an odd speed for any cart to go if things are working right, how did you measure that, or just a guess? I ask because if it is a Club Car and your speed is really 15ish, you may be able to get the dealer to change the speed code, which will get you over 19 MPH. Carts will still pass you, but not as many :)

Can you provide some more info about the cart, like Year, Make, serial number if possible?

Without specific information here are some generalities I have found:


Tire pressure, make sure they are inflated properly
Battery strength, volts == speed in electric carts
Good wires, no corrosion, see battery strength
Brake drag, brakes need adjusting, jack up the rear and see if the wheels spins free.

Electric carts do not have any mechanical governor that you can remove or adjust. They may however have a programmable motor controller that may be able to be reprogrammed depending on the model of the controller. The controller is located near the motor and has wires running from it to the motor. You need to get the model number and then go to an online forum where you might be able to get some "how-to" information on how to reprogram it. If it is not reprogrammable, you may be able to replace it with a different one. Buggies Unlimited has a forum that may help you.
