Never noticed until today when trying to access the other news site while connected to wifi in one of the rec centers. Got this popup:

Never tried so haven’t noticed. Will definitely try next time. Sad state of affairs if that’s the case.

 "News site" is being very generous. And the way I think of it...... you reap what you sow.

Yeah, they mainly regurgitate and sensationalize police reports. And, seem to exploit any village related negative news. They often include someone's home address, what they paid for their home, etc. I know, technically, it's public record (but shouldn't be), but it's mean spirited and unprofessional.

It can be read online unlike the official "news" site and there is often useful information presented. As for the other site, the one that is allowed... when the smell of roses is that strong I know there is a lot of perfume and lipstick being applied to something.

Actually, it's not blocked for what its new content is, but rather all the other extraneous stuff on the site. Lots of Malware and other predatory things....

All that, and then some.

V - N is tabloid sensationalism, their "comment" sections serving as havens for bots and keyboard warriors with apparently varying degrees of sanity. On the other side of the seesaw we have The Sun, which is all rainbows and unicorns.

The truth, as always, is somewhere in between.

Yes, the site is chock full of ads. Don't accidentally click on anything. I use the Brave browser which blocks some of the wayward content.

I use Firefox, and the uBlock Origin add-on. Never see an ad on any site.

I find that Villages News sometimes has interesting articles. Always very short, just a few paragraphs & sometimes those paragraphs just contain a single sentence. So a very quick read.

It often reminds me of reading the supermarket tabloids or one's local hometown advertising rag in which they toss in some local dirt. :). Sometimes fun and other times informative and other times, like when reading the comments to politically related articles or "letters to the editor" is often disgusting reminding me of the thankfully gone (not at all)anonymous politics section that used to exist here.

Yeah, reality sucks. Couldn’t they just gloss over life like the other paper?

The worst part, besides the lousy writing, is the obnoxious remarks.

It makes you feel like you live in a crime ridden area and the remarks are always political and low class.

Why is that a sad state of affairs? When TV owns the WiFi system, it is their property, and they can regulate its use as they see fit. Don't like their filters? Turn off your WiFi, and log in via your cellular connection. Is it equally shocking to experience the filtering and censorship being practiced by major social media platforms?

It is a sad state of affairs, IF IT IS THE CASE, because I expected more from the team that runs the place. Going to the trouble of blocking a popular publication is petty. Blocking it the-site-that-shall-not-be-named on here is petty too.

Thank you for the advice on how to use my phone. Now, if only I had someone to help me tie my shoes....

Actually blocking a website (if it is the case) is far different than a conspiracy theory about major social media platforms. But that aside, one is provided for entertainment and the other is provided as a service - I expect more from a service.

figures.. that is one of the most entertaining sites. I like seeing the mug shots of our neighbors. I do wish it had more content though.

I've read complementary copies of the Villages Daily Enquirer Sun News Times or whatever. Nothing of substance there either.....

The Villages paper is called the "Happy Paper".

The dash dot come presentation is a Useless police blotter report.

I did verify that the website is indeed blocked from the rec center wifi system. I agree that it is a sad state of affairs, and petty, to censor a mainstream website that, apparently, only displays accurate public information, not misinformation. I am not in favor of censorship. But, it is not a big deal and the website is easy to access from other sources. Knowledge is power.

 Wow! Does that explain a lot or what? Knowledge? Knowledge? :clap2: I would wait and read a "free" copy of the paper on recycling night before I would get my knowledge from that online rag.
I do understand why some like it..... (not you)they have the same dislike for the developer so have something in common.

Maybe I haven't read the misinformation parts. I usually only read the crime articles, which seems as though they are just copied from police reports and online public information. I am not a regular reader of the website, and I do not dislike the developer.

In addition, I have seen the reporter from this paper sitting in many of the CDD and PWAC meetings I attend. Unless the "sunshine and roses" reporter is sitting at the staff table (which in itself would say a lot), their reporting must come from what they are told by the District staff. There are usually very few people in those meetings and I've only seen one that appears to be a reporter.

There is the crime information, the CDD and PWAC information, articles about events in Wildwood and Sumter county in general, articles about controversial subjects that don't meet the "sunshine and roses" criteria, and letters. While some/many of the letters are ridiculous, others have interesting viewpoints. Since the "sunshine and roses" paper has little online presence and no letters to the editor that I know of, you will never learn the perspective of the residents.

The dash site has been blocked by rec center wifi for a couple of years now. I noticed it way back then and the owner of the dash site also knew of the wifi censorship. It's sad that The Villages powers that be feel it important to them to practice such obvious censorship.

Also, assuming the reason for doing it.

Two reasons NOT to get upset. Buy hey, getting upset is one of the biggest hobbies in TV.

It turns out it is the case so take that question off table.
