View Full Version : Why Doesn't TOTV's Search Function Work Better?

Are there any plans to improve TOTV's "Search" function? Many times I'll search for words or names that I recall were posted earlier and come back empty. As this site's content grows, the search function will become more necessary and more valuable. Anyone else have a similar observation?
George
George,
I don't fully understand our search either.
You can try Google, but make is specific to our site.
Go to google.com
enter your search terms following this.
site:talkofthevillages.com xxx
Your search term would go where the xxx is.

Tony :
I think you made my day also. I thought I was the only person having trouble with the search option. I gave up on it .:coolsmiley:

Interesting. I never knew you could you google to search individual sites. I'll have to try that in the future.

Hey, Tony, why don't you place a Google search box right on TOTV? There's a radio button that makes it specific to this site. See the bottom of any page at http://www.drmirkin.com/ for an example of this. Set up a google Adsense account to install it. You will even make a little money from it.
We have talked about this for a while, and we are talking about it again.
We talk too much. Should have done this month's ago when Talk Host suggested it. I think he invented it.

While you're at it, you might want to add Google Adsense for content -- painless revenue.
We use Adsense, but I don't know what Adsense for Content is.

Sorry, now I see it -- that's what you're already using -- so making the search box will be easy ("Adsense for Search").

Tony,
Thanks so much for that great search trick! Worked like a charm.....I had no idea - 2 years ago I worked on improving the Search function on a global/corporate web site by changing rankings, adding synonims, etc and never stumbled upon that. I absolutely love it! I will definitely use that little trick, thank you!!

Tony, Do you know how frequently Google's spiders index content on TOTV?
Curious George
May have answered my own question, "within hours." Stuff posted last evening was searchable less than five hours later.

tony, can you incorporate google into totv search, sounds like a great idea, but how do we remember how to do it 3 months from now (also what about the other 15,000 members that may not view this thread....gn
If we can find where to place the Google search on our pages, I'm sure Darrell will get it in there.
Then you will not have to remember how to do it, but don't forget it works on any web site so put it on a little sticky note and paste it to your forehead.
Of course you could always search here for this thread.
About the spiders? I don't know how often they crawl, but they are around a lot. I think constantly. Take a look down the Who's Online page and you'll find a bunch of spiders always around.
