I paid like $27 for "Leather" Belt, from the belt vendor at town square. I used it for like 6 months and then the vinyl coating on it started peeling off. I was like what? This is supposed to be Leather. Brought it back to them and they said, they had never seen this happen before. I said OK..must be defective then, can I get a new one. The Lady tried to imply it was my fault and pointed to the All Sales Final words written in Magic Marker on her sign. Thought I'd let you all know.

Fortunately your loss was kept at a minimum. 6 months use of a belt, yes, $5 a month not a bargain for sure but could be much worse. Few want to hear the sad tale of others, but our adult children got extremely expensive lesson on "leather". Apparently, it is legal to sell "genuine" leather furniture in the thousands of dollars, as long as there is some tiny microscopic layer of true (animal source) leather. They wanted to invest in the "real thing" as it would last a life time. In three years, the micro leather covering had begun to peel off the "vegan" leather that comprised 99.9% of the upholstery. Make a note of that, I have seen this very same type of "leather" furniture in many area stores. Like a genuine leather belt (which will definitely run $100 at the very least, unless laminated with something else), a genuine leather couch is going to be MANY thousands of dollars. If you still would like to have a genuine leather belt, check out the area stores that sell riding equipment and accessories, I've noticed their genuine leather belts are not all western design. When someone offers you a genuine leather belt, or wallet, etc. for $25-$30, as mom always said, if it sounds too good to be true, it is !

I don't expect those belts to last more than a year. Went to replace one at the Hometown Halloween event but pickings were slim.

Things like this irritate me.
I might have stood there for a couple hours arguing with her and saying how unhappy I was with the product she was selling and I would keep asking for my money back. During my diatribe, she would probably not make any sales.
In any confrontation, physical or verbal, the goal is to cause the other person more unhappiness than they cause you.

If the belt fell apart in a month or so understand but they did get 6 months use out of it. Some customers not worth dealing with.

It is almost impossible to find a belt that is actually made of 100 percent genuine leather. Most are vinyl, but some may have a thin leather covering over a fabric. If the belt you purchased was labelled as "leather" then the vendor was just following the standard advertising practice for belts. So, other than overcharging you, the vendor did nothing wrong. We experienced the "bonded leather" failure about 7-8 years ago and learned a lesson as well. Cheaper (a relative term of course to what one can afford), or "super sale" leather furniture is almost always "mostly bonded or very thin leather." "Vegan leather" (AKA PU leather AKA polyurethane leather AKA vinyl AKA plastic)" has been around for a number of years as well. It started out with the cheap cell phone cases years ago then moved on to clothing and furniture. Even "pure leather" has many varieties (not unlike gold) based on thickness. We looked at an $8000 leather reclining sofa recently just for the fun of it at that furniture store on 441 in Lady lake (would never buy it) but the difference was so obvious and the minute you sat on it you KNEW why it was $8G's! I could have sat on it all night. Gotta be an educated consumer these days and in most cases you get exactly what you pay for.

In Virginia, I had a $6,000 leather sectional that I bought from a store named "Scan". It was wonderful. But, the store went out of business, probably because people are too cheap to buy quality leather furniture. The stuff they sell now in furniture stores is mostly cheap junk.

Besides belts and furniture coverings, there are many more products out there that are made of this cheap "pleather". It's simply a thin plastic coating sprayed onto fabric. You will find it used in sneakers, golf shoes, "all weather" golf gloves and more. After a while the coating shrinks, cracks and flakes off. Had the same experience with chairs from a dining room set. Happens all the time. A cheap, poor substitute for real leather.

You usually can tell the difference between a bonded leather belt and a genuine leather one if you look and examine it closely. My husband has some real leather belts and they have lasted and lasted and lasted and are still in good condition.
I would not have accepted the market seller's "all sales final" attitude because the item was not as described.

Go to WalMart I bought a full grain leather belt for $17.
Full grain leather is also genuine leather by definition. But again, someone selling full grain leather generally won't market it as genuine leather because they know the difference. So, to recap, full grain leather is considered the best because it's the full hide, not sanded or corrected or weakened in any way.

As a leathercrafter who knows what leather costs, I can tell you that you will not get a full grain leather belt for anywhere near that price. As was mentioned in another comment, if there is a thin leather coating on it they can call it genuine leather and that is likely what was peeling off. If you buy a real full grain leather belt blank you will pay around $30 for a 1.5ā strip. Add in a buckle, dye, finish, and someoneās time. Look for items that say they are top grain or full grain, not genuine leather.
Here is a link to a good article that explains the differences.

From experience, this approach DEFINTITELY works. Many years ago, I had booked a vacation at Mount Airy Lodge in the Poconos. In very tiny writing, it was indicated that once you paid for your room, there was no refunds. I moved 5 times in 3 days, with each room being worse than the previous.
So, I parked myself in the lobby of the hotel and became an official "greeter" - I warned all incoming people of their procedures and suggested that they immediately book somewhere else. After turning down multiple families and the Sons of Italy convention, the manager rushed over to tell me that "we have another room for you."
"Suite" was more like it - two bedrooms with 4 beds altogether, two bathrooms, and a living area with a large couch.

I buy most of my clothes at Hugo Boss or Armani , Iāve buy my belts from both places Italian leather , last ones about 3 years ago , I usually give them away after 3 or 4 years out of boredom, but my nephew has been wearing a couple of them for 10 years or so , still in great condition, price last time was about $100 ,people think high end clothes and accessories are expensive but that shirt you bought for $10 fades very quickly , just like anything else you get what you pay for and when it comes to things people wear it shows ( like every night in the town square or restaurants)

It is almost impossible to find a belt that is actually made of 100 percent genuine leather. Most are vinyl, but some may have a thin leather covering over a fabric. The leather covering will either be stitched or glued to the fabric. I buy belts on sale at Bealls for about $15 and throw them away in about 3-6 months. If the belt you purchased was labelled as "leather" then the vendor was just following the standard advertising practice for belts. So, other than overcharging you, the vendor did nothing wrong. Next time, go to Bealls when they have a sale, which is almost always.
The vendor DID DO something wrong. But, is only the same thing as 100s of thousands of OTHER vendors are doing. At some point (30 years ago?) sellers realized that they would NOT get sued or otherwise hurt for false advertising by stating that soft flexible PLASTIC cloth is LEATHER. Even REAL leather shoes ceased to exist....... again replaced by a soft, flexible plastic product. So, for about 30 years, I no longer EXPECT "leather" to be REAL leather.
I do what the US military did with their uniforms many, many years ago - went to tough canvas belts. Also. there is a western, cowboy-style type of belt made with woven small nylon threads that are practically indestructible and will last for 25 years (I just made that number up), but it WILL last a long time.

Found this online. Never bought there but the Amish usually make high quality items. And only $12 more than the one bought by OP.
Amish Full Grain Leather Belt, Dark Brown - H.N. Williams (https://www.hnwilliams.com/product/amish-full-grain-leather-belt-dark-brown/)
That IS a nice-looking belt that seems to be real leather. And the price is NOT off-the-charts.

You usually can tell the difference between a bonded leather belt and a genuine leather one if you look and examine it closely. My husband has some real leather belts and they have lasted and lasted and lasted and are still in good condition.
I would not have accepted the market seller's "all sales final" attitude because the item was not as described.
Do a "scratch test" on the inside of a belt or the outside of a shoe. Leather will scratch. Vinyl will not.

Yes, exactly the point. When you purchase "genuine" leather belt (anything), and the price is ridiculously low for the article, unfortunately it's on you to hesitate to purchase. If a menu offered a genuine 1.5-2# Maine lobster dinner for $6.99, you could take a chance but really, best to stop and THINK. Yes, it IS aggravating that it is legal to add a microscopic bit of a material and be able to label as such ! ! If a food product is labeled "Crab meat & rice", you SHOULD be able to expect it to be mainly crab meat... the government (?) says products must be labeled according to the percentage of each ingredient... highest percentage first...but... LOL !

Depends on where you shop as well as what you are shopping for.
Mills Fleet Farm (big in MN and WI but I don't think they exist down here) does sell genuine leather belts in the neighborhood of $25 - $30. They last pretty much forever. The reason I know they're genuine leather and not a cheap imitation is because after wearing one for about five years I lost a bunch of weight. Being the cheap miserly old codger that I am, I saw no point in throwing away a perfectly serviceable belt, so I cut about six inches off the end. I'm wearing it right now. Trust me, it is 100% leather.
Fleet Farm is a farm store. They do sell some gaudy stuff but for the most part it is strong, serviceable stuff designed for outdoor hardworking folks.

Caveat Emptorā¦probably wasnāt leather if they had to vinyl coat it. $27? We call that lifeās tuition. Carry on..

Kinda was your fault. Anything with a vinyl coating is probably not leather. Caveat Emptor

The beautiful Mt Airy lodge! Now a casino and hotel

We should let the OP know that Tractor Supply has a nice selection of belts in stock. Hard to believe that has gone on for five pages all over a $27 cheap belt.

I agree. Apparently, some posters think you can. But, I am skeptical. I have bought belts that I thought were leather until they started to fall apart.

In my opinion, the real issue is that a belt can be constructed from a solid, one piece of thick leather, or it can be constructed from 3 or more layers of material, with the outer layers being thin leather and the inner layers being a cheaper material. All of the belts that I have purchased in retail stores have been layered belts, even though some of them appear to be solid leather. The ones that have stitching on the edges are most likely layered, but some layered belts are glued together, and they may appear to be solid leather. If you want a durable belt, buy a solid leather belt, but you may have trouble finding one, especially if you are shopping in retail stores, and you will probably pay more for it. My two cents worth.
