View Full Version : Political Signs and The Villages

Just about all of us know we can't have any signs on our lawns. I rarely see signs because of this. Now I see many political signs on lawns. I don't believe it is because owners don't know the rules, but that the feel they can ignore the rules this year at this time.
I contacted The Villages and they told me they have been inundated with complaints lately and they just can't keep up. Perhaps, the offenders realize this, and just play the waiting game that the election will be over before they catch up with me.
It just sends a bad message to the Community and causes further division. Most of us are not swayed by political signs, so why break the rules and stir the pot?

I'd like to think that is my worst issue that concerns me...but alas!...it is not. the reason people ignore the villages simplest of rules is because they have the attitude of a 12 year old.

I don't much care. Signs don't influence me either way. I am far more concerned about where the candidates stand on the issues.
TV allows political signs in the windows of homes facing the street. Guy across the street has a large "Trump 2024" sign in his lanai window. We see flags flying that are political in nature--perfectly OK as I understand it. Bumper stickers abound; it is nothing to see a car parked in a driveway with political signage on the back. All that and more IS allowed, and seems to be increasing as the election approaches.
Maybe instead of being peeved at the signs we should be thankful that, in five days, there will be no more need for them.

Yet another first world problem in The Villages.

I find it ironic that the people who live in the more strict deed restricted areas are complaining about these signs.
Meanwhile, up in the HIstoric Area, which has the (fake news) reputation of being a trashy trailer park with cars on cinderblocks and boomboxes blaring in the driveways all day - there aren't ANY political signs on peoples' yards in my neighborhood. Not a single one.
There are a few signs in windows, including one for the former president when he was running for 2020. I guess some folks just really love living in the past, and that's fine. It's tacky and silly, but it's in their window and it gives everyone else a good chuckle.

It just sends a bad message to the Community and causes further division.
No it doesn't.
I have strong political beliefs. If my neighbors don't agree with me, it does not cause any division between us.

I have strong political beliefs. If my neighbors don't agree with me, it does not cause any division between us.
It all depends on how you express those beliefs. There are civilized ways of expressing it on a sign:
"Vote [person's name] for [office]" or "Vote [political party name]!"
vs.
"[The other person] is [doing bad thing] vote [your candidate] instead!" or "[Opposing party] is [bad evil horrible thing you think they want to do] vote [your party] instead!"
The first options are civilized. Tacky and unattractive, but civilized. The second options are mean-spirited, divisive, and tells me more about the person living there than it does about the people they're supporting.

I have only seen one sign out in the lawn here in Lynnhaven. The others are in the windows and one has been there since 2020.

I do not believe in sharing my views with random people that drive by, walk by etc. In terms of political signs it is sort of unique. For example the do not call list. Political calls are allowed.
"I contacted the villages and they told me they have been inundated with complaints lately and just can't keep up." I read that as, the election will be over in six days we will deal with it in TEN days. IS IT REALLY IMPORTANT? How about Halloween decorations? Christmas decorations?

Villagers ignore a lot of rules. Look the other way. It would be full time job to complain about all of them.

To some it is really important. I'm not sure how I would feel but thankfully I have seen no such signs in my neighborhood.
As for the holiday decorations (and anything else really) READ YOUR RESTRICTIONS! Mine includes the phrase, "except for seasons[sic] displays not exceeding a thirty (30) day duration."

Is it the signs you don't like or the name on the signs you don't like? We all know what 99% of the signs say.
My neighbor actually moved out of TV recently for the sole reason of what way TV leans. That's exactly what she told me why she was moving.

Exactly. Everyone is welcome to their own viewpoints. I have friends at both ends of political spectrum. Some people are easily offended by lots of things.

I care. The election may be over in five days but the 2024 election starts in six. I dread the next two years with all the negativity and inundation of politics that's about to begin. That's not why I came to "paradise".

Seriously, your worried about this and called The Villages? It’s temporary and a fundamental right. I think your more offended that it is not your candidate choice.

Signs are a form of speech and are permitted per the Supreme Court of the USA. Look up Reed vs Gilbert AZ. Since TV management is a subset of the government, all deed restrictions were voided as unconstitutional by that ruling.

I have neighbors who have different political views, but they refrain from displaying their affiliation. I just don't understand political signs, golf carts decorated with signs and banners. Does anyone think seeing this is going to change anyone's mind.
Do you think I will come home and say to my wife. I believed in the person I was voting for, but I saw a parade of golf carts in the town square. They were so pretty I'm going to change my vote.

The beginning section of Heath Springs Dr. is inundated with the signs. When Community Standards serves them with a violation they put their golf cart in their driveway and display the same signs on the back of the cart. Pathetic!

I don’t like the signs , but if they were just up for a couple of weeks I could live with that . The problem I have with the flags is that many stay up permanently, in the divisive society that we live in that flag becomes bad for property values.I don’t want to have my home for sale bypassed by even one person because my neighbor is flying some political flag.I actually knew one person that during the sale period people mentioned to realtor about the political flag next door, I’m sure other reasons played into not buying the house but I don’t think the sellers were the only ones where this occurred..I wouldn’t even look at a home for sale with a political flag from either party waving a year after an election

It is amazing what people complain about here in the villages. And political signs have always been put up in yards or in windows before elections. And they should all come back down after the elections. Thank God it will be over in less than a week. And thank God that’s all you have to complain about this week

The signs may not change minds, but they do support enthusiasm for a candidate and thus help increase voter turnout. That is why there are signs for candidates all across the country.
