Skylight Question

During the storm, something crashed, and I could see a metal object lying in my solar tube. The solar tube, of course, started leaking. Any ideas of what this could be or who I can call to get it fixed? I've only lived here for a little over a year and the home is 20 years old. The roof is new from 2019. I will appreciate any help that anyone has to offer. Thanks.

Upon further inspection, we found that the outside cap on the solar tube blew off. I'm assuming that the metal piece was holding it on. Did the Villages use a certain company to install these when they were building homes? The previous homeowner did a great job of keeping records, but I can't find anything for the solar tube. I'm going to try to find his number and give him a call.

I would start with the yellow pages and start calling all of the solar light tube installers. See if any are willing to come out and look at your situation. Hopefully you will find someone to work with you on older skylights. Do not be surprised if the suggestion is to completely replace the existing unit. Also, you may be able to remove the inside panel at the ceiling and see the damaged part.

I would also suggest that you call your homeowner's insurance agent.

I would try to contact the company that install the skylight, or solar tube if that is what you have. There should have been a permit on record for the work. If you are available to contact the previous homeowner they may know who did the installation.

Solar tubes most likely came from the Solar Guys. Good place to start.

I would call the only company which nowadays installs skylights: Velux.

Skylights and solar tubes are like apples and oranges. Don’t call Solar Guys.

IF it is a solar tube, then call the Solar guys. We had wind damage with screens on our lanai. Travelers Insurance told us that the 2% hurricane deductible (not the usual $1000 for wind damage) applied. I said it was a tropical storm when it hit here. Matters not I'm told. It was a hurricane when it made landfall.

There are two brands of solar tubes. The plastic cover of yours will need to be replaced, assuming it was broken. If it wasn't broken, just place it back over the tube, perhaps, with a dab of construction adhesive to hold it in place.

I had one of each brand of solar lights. The dome on the Velux brand was cracked and leaking. I covered the crack with Gorilla Tape (the strongest duct tape) and went looking for a replacement. I learned that the contractor in The Villages who was the Velux dealer, had gone out of business. I tried to buy one from the Velux company which turned into a nightmare. Eventually, I got a replacement from Home Depot.

If you have the other brand (the name of which I don't recall) call the Solar Guys. They always have an ad in the Daily Sun. They were extremely helpful and explained that they couldn't replace the Velux dome on my house, but they steered me in the proper direction to obtain a replacement. If they carry the brand of your dome, by all means hire them to replace it.

Any handyman or agile neighbor, can replace the dome. You simply need to identify the correct brand and size. Solar Guys identified mine as being a Velux and a certain size from a photo I attached to an email.

Call the Solar Guys as that is their product. The piece of metal is the reflective mirror which really isn’t needed here. The dome snaps on and has been known to pop off if wind pressure is just right.
